Such Great Heights
1. The Postal Service Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am thinking it's a sign
That the freckles in our eyes
Are mirror images
And when we kiss they're perfectly aligned

And I have to speculate
That God Himself did make
Us into corresponding shapes
Like puzzle pieces from the clay

And true it may seem like a stretch
But it's thoughts like this that catch
My troubled head when you're away
And when I am missing you to death

And when you are out there on the road
For several weeks of shows
And when you scan the radio
I hope this song will guide you home

They will see us waving from such great heights
Come down now, they'll say
But everything looks perfect from far away
Come down now but we'll stay

I tried my best to leave
This all on your machine
But the persistent beat
It sounded thin upon the sending

And that frankly will not fly
You'll hear the shrillest highs
And lowest lows with the windows down
And this is guiding you home

They will see us waving from such great heights
Come down now they'll say
But everything looks perfect from far away
Come down now but we'll stay

They will see us waving from such great heights
Come down now they'll say
But everything looks perfect from far away
Come down now but we'll stay

(They will see us waving from such great heights)
(Come down now)

They will see us waving from such great heights
(Come down now)

Overall Meaning

The Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights” is a poignant and introspective reflection on an intense, heartfelt connection between two people. The song carries a feeling of a shared intimacy, emphasizing how the freckles in their eyes are perfectly aligned when they kiss. The concept of the song constructs the idea that the two were made for each other by a higher power, like puzzle pieces artfully crafted from clay. The singer speculates that thoughts like this help catch his troubled head when his lover is away, and he misses her to death. It is a song that carries a message of hope, with the idea that even when lost, they will always find their way back to each other, guided by the song itself.

The song has an emotional tug, conveying the idea that the two lovers have been apart due to work or some other obligation, and while he's away, she is waving from such great heights. The song is a plea for them to come down and share their feelings with each other, even though everything may look perfect from afar. The song’s melody and lyrics work in concert to create a lulling, reflective mood that captures the quiet desperation of separation and the hope for reunion.

When my mom and I were really struggling, and we had no furniture in our place except a folding table, two chairs, and a couple of blow-up mattresses, my mom would plug some speakers into her laptop and blast this in the morning for us to dance to before I left for school. There was 6 month span in 8th grade when it was just us, and my dad was still in Costa Rica, trying to sell our house. But my mom's "morning mixes" kept every hard day starting good..... I love this song.

One of my favourite things about YouTube is reading the comments sections of song videos and seeing other people’s memories associated with the song in question. The memories are as vast as the people who share them but speaks to the ways we can all connect with one another as people. 😊
