Versus
10. Jay-z Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey sucka nigga
Where ever you are
I thought about ya fool
While I was driving my car

I wonder if you fools
Realize how far
You are
You're no where in my rear mirror

Your last shit ain't better
Than my first shit
Your best shit
Ain't better than my worst shit

The truth in my verses
Versus

Your metaphors
About what your net worth is, ha ha ha ha ha

Overall Meaning

In Jay-Z's song "Versus," he is essentially dissing someone who is a "sucka nigga." He wants this person to know that he hasn't forgotten about them, even while driving his car. He goes on to explain that this person is nowhere near him, and that their last work is not as good as Jay's very first work. He even takes a jab at their best work, saying it does not compare to his worst work. Essentially, Jay-Z is telling this person that he is on a whole other level, and their attempts to compete with him are futile.

The last line is particularly interesting, as Jay mocks the other person's lyrics by saying "Your metaphors about what your net worth is, ha ha ha ha ha." He is essentially saying that the other person's lyrics are not authentic, and they are just talking about their material possessions because that is all they have to offer. Jay, on the other hand, speaks the truth in his verses and is not concerned with flaunting his wealth.

Overall, "Versus" is a classic Jay-Z track where he flexes his lyrical ability and asserts his superiority over a weaker opponent. The song sparks a competitive spirit and reminds listeners that Jay-Z is one of the greatest rappers of all time.

A hundred million to the good and I'm still talkin' yayo
At a snails pace I won this race that y'all trail
Uh, uh, Blueprint's for sale
Follow in my footprints, you can't fail
Set sail, I used to duck shots, but now I eat quail
I'll probably never see jail
Each tale contains more of the truth
Of the statute allows me to go into detail
Uh, close your eyes, you can smell
Hov's the audio equivalent of braille
That's why they feel me in the favelas in Brazil
And Waterhouse, 'cause real recognize real, rah
You know me, I don't need no introductions
Call me, make a lil' somethin' out of nothin'
E'rywhere you go, we the topic of discussion
Damn, that's gotta be disgusting

Jayz the prelude/kingdom come intro (jay most slept on verse)
The game's fucked up
Nigga's beats is bangin', nigga your hooks did it
Your lyrics didn't, your gangsta look did it
So I would write it if y'all could get it
Bein intricate'll get you wood, critic
On the internet, they like you should spit it
I'm like you should buy it, nigga that's good business
Forget this rap shit I need a new hustle
A little bit of everything, the new improved Russell
I say that reluctantly cause I do struggle
As you see I can't leave so I do love you
But I'm just a hustler disguised as a rapper
In fact you can't fit this hustle inside of a wrapper
Back when crack was
What these pills are, I was a real star
Complete with real cars, no video ones
You can come and set up a camera, let the video run
And my real life, complete with real ice
VVS boulders oh they're visibly set
Head and shoulders, my invisible neck
You see Hova wasn't digital yet
Befo' Steve Jobs made the iPod
Was gettin' head jobs, we call that intimate
Back when rappers wouldn't dare play lyrical roulette
With a automatic weapon I was rappin' with a Tec
Fresh like Mannie be, chain like anti-freeze
Shoebox full of cash, dealer man hand me ki's
Pantries full of Arm & Hammer, don't take Nancy Drew to see
What it do, I'm a damn G
Just sent a million dollars through a hands free
That's big money talk, can you answer me?
Before the answer was a 3
I was down in Georgetown with a Hoya chick, lawyer chick
Sure he's rich now cause he saw the shit, all this shit
That's why they call him Hov', cause he came before all this shit
Bought a 6, quarter seven, skipped on them quarter eights
Bought a 9 for non-stop Glock work all the time
Woo! Guess who's back?
Since this is a new era, got a fresh new hat
Ten year veteran, I've been set
I've been through with this bullshit game but I never quit
I used to think rappin' at 38 was ill
But last year alone I grossed 38 mill'
I know I ain't quite 38 but still
The flow so Special got a 38 feel
The real is back, hehehehe
