Brown Eyed Girl
100 Best Rock Songs Ever - Van Morrison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey, where did we go?
Days when the rains came
Down in the hollow
Playin' a new game
Laughing and a running hey, hey
Skipping and a jumping
In the misty morning fog with
Our hearts a thumpin' and you
My brown-eyed girl
You, my brown-eyed girl

Whatever happened
To Tuesday and so slow?
Going down the old mine
With a transistor radio
Standing in the sunlight laughing
Hiding behind a rainbow's wall
Slipping and sliding
All along the waterfall, with you
My brown-eyed girl
You, my brown-eyed girl

Do you remember when we used to sing
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da
Just like that
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da, la te da

So hard to find my way
Now that I'm all on my own
I saw you just the other day
My, how you have grown
Cast my memory back there, Lord
Sometimes I'm overcome thinking 'bout
Making love in the green grass
Behind the stadium with you
My brown-eyed girl
You, my brown-eyed girl

Do you remember when we used to sing
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da, la te da
(Bit by bit, by bit, by bit, by bit, by bit)
(Sha la la la la la la, la te da, la te da

Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da, la te da
(La te da, da da da da da da da da)

Overall Meaning

Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl" first released in June 1967, has become a classic rock song over the years. The song, rather upbeat and joyful in its melody, seems to reminisce over a time in the past when life was simpler and filled with adventure. The verse "Hey, where did we go?/Days when the rains came/Down in the hollow/Playin' a new game" sets the tone of the song, evoking wistful memories of a happy, carefree time with a special girl.

The song seems to tell the story of two young people, who used to spend their days singing, hiding and laughing in the sun. The slow-paced "Whatever happened/To Tuesday and so slow?" seems to suggest a longing for a less hurried past. The song brings nostalgia to the forefront with the stanza "Slipping and sliding/All along the waterfall, with you/My brown-eyed girl/You, my brown-eyed girl." It not only expresses the romantic love Morrison has for the girl with brown eyes but also a love for the memory of the moments spent with her.

The song is not only a mixture of reminiscing past and a declaration of love but also explores how time flies and how people change. The lyrics "So hard to find my way/Now that I'm all on my own" show that the singer has grown and changed but still remembers the wonderful times spent with the brown-eyed girl.

"And every cat in the twilight's gray/ Every possible cat."

The tortoiseshell cat,
She sits on the mat,
As gay as a sunflower she;
In orange and black you see her wink,
And her waistcoat’s white and her nose is pink,
And her eyes are as green as the sea.
But all is vanity, all the way;
Twilight’s coming and close of day,
And every cat in the twilight’s gray,
Every possible cat.

The tortoiseshell cat,
She is smooth and fat,
And we call her Josephine,
Because she weareth upon her back
This coat of colours, this raven black,
This red of tangerine;
But all is vanity, all the way;
Twilight follows the brightest day,
And every cat in the twilight’s gray,
Every possible cat.

My husband used to sing this song to me all the time when we were dating. Then alot after we were married too. Every year on my birthday. He passed away three months ago and my birthday is tomorrow. It will be the first birthday I won't hear him sing this song to me . I was 16 when he first started and I'll be 54 tomorrow. I keep listening to it now just to remember him. I miss him so much.

Happy birthday. May he Rest In Peace. Just treasure the memories. Try to seek support from friends and family. He would want you to be showing up and doing your best. Don’t let him down. Take care.
