My two stepdaughters hated me through out there teen years . I walked into a home with disrespectful kids. So I did what needed to be done to instill respect and guidance into them . One is a police officer and the other one is in school for nursing . They thank me everyday for being extra hard on them when they were young . Parents have to start taking accountability for raising there kids . It’s not the teacher, police officers, or court systems job .

I had the choir and our choir fellowshipped with other youth choirs in the area. We had church mother's that took us to museums roller skating parks, you name it we did it. Find a good Bible based Church with a good youth ministry.

Each listen and said the hoped I'd learned my lesson. Today my dad would be in jail but because of the way I was raised is why I'm not buried or behind bars.

My mother single handedly raised 4 girls and 2 boys. She instilled fear in us at an early age. We had to play near our home, she monitors our friends and if we didn't abide by her rules she was on us like white on rice. During down time and summer vacation she kept us busy. She enrolled my brother in a boys choir that traveled to other cities. She forced us to get summer youth jobs. And every Saturday we had to get up early for Saturday clean up. My dad was not available due to psychiatric issues. I always said my mom should have written a book called "Mom Rules." My sister raised her 3 sons and my nephew using the son principles and they are all outstanding young men. So proud. We don't play with these kids. Now I have grands and we stay on top of them.

Your Mom is a treasure and it sounds as if you’re one too. I raised my daughter alone and that was tough, more than one child and you could and should write a book. I’d do it again in a heartbeat. I was warned by so many folks how because I was solo, my child would be a criminal, turn out horrible, etc. Kids thrive on discipline and may resent you at the time but they always know they’re loved and you and your family are proof of that. Why wasn’t he being monitored MORE closely (considering) from both his parents, and the officials. We know that with Yummy it seems like he didn’t have a chance from birth. EVERYBODY failed him. ALL THOSE FCKRS!! And yet people still aren’t getting the picture. We keep putting the blame on society and the police, but no accountability whatsoever from the family. I went through the same thing with my son, at that age he was being manipulated and used by grown men. There was other kid’s were involved, it’s a blessing that my son survived after serving many years locked up. Now he’s free, living a good life, working, married with many children. I think about my 13yr old and everyone says I’m too overprotective but I want him to grow up and be productive. I just don’t understand letting kids do whatever they want then surprised when things happen. It’s sad because he was only 12 but every adult in his life holds some accountability as well!

In a couple of years buy him a little dirt bike & take him to a local track & get him riding/racing & hanging out with like minded kids & having fun. Kids need a hobby & keep busy on the weekends riding bikes & learning to maintain & repair them. That’s how i grew up & now both my teenage boys are madly into dirt bikes since age 7 & all their friends are also & I’ve had no problems with them so far 14 & 16yr olds. Most boys love dirt bikes & get right into them but it’s a expensive hobby but buy new model bikes every 2yrs but anything is worth keeping them of the streets & hang’n out with losers causing havoc. Anyway it’s just my opinion i ain’t telling you how to raise your boy ok 👍 just saying what worked for me.

Our young ones don't seem to have a chance out here. I agree with many on here, education, respect, empathy etc all starts at home. You can't be a best friend and a parent to your child these days. They act like there're scared to parent, so what if they get mad, and not talk to you. A least they're alive to see anotherday. These young males also need their dad in their life, a mom can only do her best when it comes to that. So sad!

My daughter is 14 and I don’t let her go to any friend’s home or anywhere else without me or her dad or my older son. I also have a tracker but I never have issues with her thank God. I don’t put up with any back talk or disrespect from any of my older 3 which are adults. It starts when they’re small and it won’t get out of hand later. Oh and yes I have always been a single mom. So it is possible to raise a respectful child alone.

My youngest is 20 and will tell you my mother didn’t play with us and all my kids recently have told me “Mommy I’m glad you were as strict as you were on us” 😔I teach 11 & 12 year olds everyday in Baltimore City schools and I used this unfortunate case as a situation to hopefully wake these young people up !

Second, you're of an entirely different ethnicity than the young boy featured in this story. It bothers me when people who aren't black and aren't from the hood, speak as if they know what it's like to be a young black boy growing up in the hood. If you listen closely to the story they said the mother and grandmother were trying to protect him. It's only so much an old lady can do when raising a young black boy. There's no way that old woman can keep up with his every move.

People often claim that their child is running with the wrong crowd, not realizing, their child IS THE WRONG CROWD. I feel bad for this family because I agree with the grandmother, adult were taking advantage of this 12 year old, even if he didn’t realize it. They use them like child soldiers. I’m not sure what was going on with the parents that allowed him to be outside while on house arrest, but this story is sad from every angle.

We allowed the system to take away prayers in schools n old fashioned parents used to used to keep kids in line. The community used to be able to make sure you respect n using ur manners. We used to treat teachers like Gods almost, n we dare disrespect our parents or anybody else. We had came from churchgoing praying parents that made sure that you respected everyone. They had Ms. Whyte police officer that if she saw u hooking school would take u home or school. Teachers would call or write a letter to tell ur parents u didn’t come to school. I moved away from my city years probably decades ago, but my family was still there. Now, my grown children, see all their cousins either dying or going to jail. My 36-year-old son called me one day and said Mom, thank you, and I said Son for what and he said because all three of us Are sitting in our living rooms at home watching TV while our cousins are out looking for the people that shot one of my other cousins. He said, we could be riding in that car. And at that moment, I knew that he realized all his life what I was doing.

Parents need to start parenting their kids from the start and not waiting until they get older. I remember when my son stole some chips out of the store, and I disciplined him really well. Now, he has a degree in business administration and in the Navy instead of in jail. I made it my business to be in his business and his life. Now he thanks me and is appreciative of me being in his business and his life.

As someone that was doing the same at that age the answer to solving this really is on the parents. As a kid living through a toxic relationship at home, i would rather be anywhere else but home. By 10 i was hang with the older kids just like him and by 13 i was the one doing things. Even though i lived with my parents i felt alone n unloved but kicking it on the block i felt loved. If something happen to me they were ready to retaliate for me and at the time you couldnt tell me that wasnt love. The 1st time i noticed my parents show a sign of worry for me was when i was 15 and came home beat the fuck. Lowkey that pissed me off more than the beating i got cause all i could think about was how bad they were at being parents. They started becoming better parents when they divorced and started taking accountability for the way they were. At 20 years old was the 1st time i had a long talk with my parents about the way i am and they way i felt about them nd myself. Now as a family we do more stuff and go out together. And as for my lil bros they want to be like their big bro but as someone that lived that street life i wouldn't want them going through this. Too much hatred and sadness comes with the streets

He's 12 years old. Don't let him out of the house if he's running with the wrong crowd and you know about it. Turn him in to police if you know he's involved in crimes. Did anybody in this family call CPS or the police for help? He's dead because he wasn't parented and disciplined. If you want people 'held accountable', it starts at home.
When we were growing up, you had to be in the house by the time the street lights came on, and we didn't live in a crime-ridden area. Your parents required that they met every friend you hung around with, and usually knew who their parents were.

I heard a story about a violent teenager, and the mother said that he stayed home, and refused to go to school! The child has never been held accountable for anything. There is no way that I could lay up in my mother's house, and not gone to school or worked.

Our condolences for the family and loved ones. The Grandmother made a couple valid points;BUT, ultimately this falls on the guardianship of a minor. He wasn't a teenager yet and was already starting an ankle monitor. Let's call a thing a thing. We cannot allow our kids to run the streets un- checked OR the streets will raise them. 🙏

This is exactly why I left. I refused to be a statics mother or wife. I picked up and decided to move down south during the Freddy Grey riots. I literally decided on a Monday and moved on Wednesday. I send my prayers and condolences to this Grandmother for being so open and honest. Just from how she spoke I feel that she tried her best to warn her grandson about the possible consequences of his bad decisions. What's also true is that once these kids get caught up in many instances they can't get out just because they want to. Praying for the city and for all the young people that they can be brave enough to not get caught up.

When I was 12 I never saw the light of day because my mother didn't allow me and my 2 brothers outside. On weekends she let us out in the front yard and that's where we had to stay. This boy got in the trouble that he got into because his people didn't watch him like they were suppose to. They let him run wild in the streets.

This is sad, but the reality is that the parents and / or guardians have to take responsibility as well. Keep the kids in check and know what they are doing and where they are at all times, and this kind of thing won't happen.💯 I raised my son in Baltimore, and he hung with older kids, aka Teenagers, and he didn't get caught up in anything because I didn't let it happen. He was hanging with all cultures and races and didn't get into trouble at all. The reason was that I did things with all of them , including playing football, baseball, basketball, and taking them to the park and recreation center to have fun and be kids . I spent money on all of them and kept them out of trouble, and when some of them were doing stupid stuff, I lectured them and explained why what they were doing was wrong and gave them guidance. Not all children have good parents or guardians, and the ones that do need to step up like I done.
We as parents need to be involved in their life and daily activities, or they will end up in trouble at some point or another. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Prayers to this boys' family and for him. It is a very tragic and sad situation for all involved. I really hope they catch the gun wielding idiot that shot and killed him or that the streets get him. Karma will catch up to him for his actions!!

The lady moved her son out of Baltimore bc she said she tried to reach out, but the other parents just didn't care about what their kids were doing. Home training begins at home!

I am so sorry for the pain this grandmother is feeling. I hope parents watch this interview and rise up to protect their children from a similar fate. Sadly, his mother didn't listen to another mother who warned her about his criminal activity. A 12 year old should not be dying in the streets. I heard a politician say this is a complicated issue. It's not. First, parents need to operate on a need to know basis. Know who your children are with and where they are at all times. Families need to lead by example. Community needs to provide support. Parents have to allow the community to provide support. Another politician stated they needed more US Attorneys in Baltimore. We need a system in place that stops children from entering the court system.

Heartbreaking to hear the father of the 15 year old who is desperately trying to find help for his delinquent son. Baltimore has a serious problem. Yes parents are mostly to blame. It was difficult to listen to the grandmother's lack of accountability but she is pointing to the fact that something needs to be done about these gangs of adults recruiting children into this war.

Excusing or absolving juvenile criminal behavior may sound like a noble act on its face, but it won't serve anyone's interest, and it will only make a bad problem worse. I got caught up in this same isht when I was a kid in the 1980's. I remember when I was 12 years old, my mom stood in juvenile court before Master (judge) Golden, crying & telling him I was out of control, she couldn't control me, and the state must take me. I went through the juvenile system (Charles HIckey School/Montrose School/Waxters Children Center/RICA/APFU). My bad attitude finally changed as a young adult only after a 2-year bit at MCTC (Hagerstown), then going through Toulson Boot Camp in Jessup, MD (props to Major Clay). I was released 4/18/1991 and never went back.

I remember my brother in law used to come get me (out of the middle of a crowd of slightly older people) and say so everyone else can hear "Get yo fast az in the house right now, YOU are NOT about to be out acting loose like the rest of them". I couldn't stand him at the time! but I'm SOOOO grateful now...

ps... I was only 12 or 13 at the time, and one of the girls who was slightly older ended up getting pregnant by a MUCH older guy... She basically got passed around by the older guys in the neighborhood until one of the homies decided to wife her, even though she slept with his friends before and after him🤷🏿‍♀️

Ok, where is the mother & father? Exactly. The fact that the grandmother has to do all the talking tells you everything. No discipline, no situational awareness like the lady that was interviewed and got her child out of the area. You will be recruited in those areas for a gang period. You have to have a plan. Unfortunately, many of these parents lived the same life and it's all good until one of their children are killed.

First of all I am not going to bear false witness on no one far as what his parents was doing or not doing cause I wasn’t there and I personally don’t know him nor they lifestyle when it came down to raising him, but what I can speak on far as his parents not coming forward to speak on this situation, when losing a child most parents not going to come forward to speak with people let alone news people most don’t want to speak with no one they be to devastated and broken some can’t even cope at the moment and I am speaking from experience I lost a child I was devastated damn near loss my mind completely place in a mental institution twice, took me a long time to get myself together I thank the creator for pulling me back together, but I can just imagine what the parents are going through that’s a difficult pill to swallow

Heartbreaking! Parents are responsible for their children’s actions. They must be in their lives with what they do, where they go and who their friends are. If they are not disciplined in the home, of course they will mix with the wrong crowd with these types of consequences.

When I was in prison I heard inmates speaking about sending kids out to do crimes that they were too cowardly to do themselves. I didn't say anything for fear of them turning on me, but I thought to myself, I will NEVER do anything to land myself back here. Why was that boy out in the streets hanging with gangs? This is a parenting issue, some people are too imature to raise a healthy-minded child. My prayers go out to this child's family.
