Waterfall
10 CC Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Gonna meet you on the corner
Gonna take you out of town
Out to where the grass is greener
And no one can be found

Gonna be there in the morning
Gonna take you by the hand
Gonna get out of the city
Gonna get back to the land

Waterfall, and it's fallin' down on me
Waterfall, and it's fallin' down
But it ain't gonna let me be

Gonna be there in the morning
Gonna take you by the hand
Gonna get out of the city
Gonna get back to the land

Waterfall, and it's fallin' down on me
Waterfall, and it's fallin' down
But it ain't gonna let me be

Hey, Waterfall
Hey, Waterfall

Hey, Waterfall
Hey, Waterfall

Overall Meaning

The song "Waterfall" by 10 CC seems to be a romantic theme about escaping hectic city life and getting back to nature with a lover. The lyrics describe the singer meeting the lover at the corner, and taking that person out of town to where grass is greener, and nobody can be found. It's about finding peace and happiness away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The singer repeatedly states that they are going to take the lover by the hand, get out of the city, and get back to the land.

The central theme of the song seems to be the waterfall. It's referenced multiple times throughout the lyrics, and the singer is trying to find some kind of solace through the falling water. However, the repetition of "it ain't gonna let me be" suggests some kind of conflict or turmoil, which adds a layer of ambiguity to the song's meaning. Perhaps the waterfall represents the singer's troubles, and they are trying to find peace amidst it all. Another interpretation could be that the waterfall represents the overwhelming feeling of love that the singer feels towards the lover, and it's impossible for them to escape it.

A common chord progression that they somehow make their own. Another lovely song from them.

Lovely harmonies and the style is so different and melancholy from some of the more tongue-in-cheek stuff. Love the climbing notes on the word "land" at the end of the line. I'm a fan of the great diversity proffered by 10cc.

Great to hear this again. First came across it on the original 100cc Greatest Hits album back in 1975 but my copy has long since disappeared.

One of my favourites of 10cc often play it. Such a good song.

I've loved this song since I first heard it on the "100cc - Greatest Hits of 10cc" album. Just got the "Live and Let Live" CD in the mail (after having lost the album 30 years ago) and still love listening to the live version as well. I still haven't figured out how to play "Waterfall" or "Fresh Air for My Momma" on the guitar.
