I was 7 years old in 1955 when this movie hit the neighborhood movie theater. I don't think there were any adults at the Saturday afternoon matinee, and it was pandemonium in the theater whenever the music would start on screen, Dancing on the seats, dancing in the aisles, kids having a hell of a time to the music we knew our parents hated. It was our first act of collective rebellion. This is why I hold my tongue whenever the subject of the awful stuff kids listen to today comes up. I have too good a memory to be such a hypocrite.

My husband and I graduated from the same small NC town in 1955 and 1958 so this was one of our favorite dance songs. He and I have been married for 63 years and he has been diagnosed with bile duct cancer with a poor prognosis. My prom song was, "the 12th of never" and we've been listening to that and other songs like, "morning has broken" by Cat Stevens this morning in the hospital and getting emotional. I decided to lighten it up a bit and get in a rock and roll mood!

I did not grow up in this era but my mom and dad did. When my siblings and I were kids my parents would have a Saturday night dance party just for us. It was a great way to wear all us kids out and my parents just love to dance. They would put on 50s and 60s music and we would seriously "rock around the clock" for hours! My dad would even play his drums. We loved every minute of it of those dance parties. They would even bring us to oldies concerts to see these performers. I danced with Chubby Checker on stage with my siblings. I even did the twist with my dad at my wedding. I am so glad my parents had these dance party nights for us kids because we got to sort of experience the 50s in some ways. I still love this music and dance to it. Thank you for the memories.

Its crazy how good this song is and how modern it sounds. That guitar solo is amazing and so crunchy and remember this was in the late 50's. Almost all recordings at this time were in mono I believe and electric guitars in those old recordings feel really flat or trebly. But this is pure Rock and Roll here. He and his band influenced everybody.

The rock and roll beat and the dances popular in 1955 were all done in the swing era by college kids around 1937. White and black clubs, frat parties, spring dances and proms.

The style was a return to the prewar craze, but with more energy and more media. 1945 to 1954 were the movie theme Hit Parade of crooner music.

This was a drum energy similar to Drum Boogie, Sing Sing Sing, and the Kansas City and Memphis sound that faded away in WW2.

Younger parents (about 35 to 40) liked the music as well as the teens did. My mom was a WW2 teen and loved all this stuff. She stopped liking pop-rock when it became drug and folk songs in the late 60s. She clung to Elvis, Chubby Checker, Bill Haley and Bobby Darin.

After the 40s the mature dances took the spotlight again and most popular music was sitting listening Jazz and thematic standards, often from movies and stage plays or Latin nightclubs.

Early 50s white college dance bands rediscovered Louis Prima "Sing Sing Sing" the original rock pop song not Goodman's orchestration, and others of that beat. Dress styles reverted to long broad skirts for ideal to show off with such a dance. Once again it merged with Jewish club music. Late 40s and early 50s Black bands were taming down the disreputable jeez tonk music by blending it with blues. Then several travelling mainstream shows like Louisiana Hayride brought it to big record label attention....as it didn't fit on their normal country labels.

Then there ord companies attached to motion picture companies featured it in films.....as people do what they see.

It's my father's 10th Death anniversary. A part of me wants to be miserable but another has decided to celebrate him instead. This song was one of his favourites. He was my superman. My mountain. My giant. He loved this song. He was a gentle giant, who loved fiercely and forgave easily. He inspired more men to do the right thing than I can count.
It's easier for me to remember how he lived for years than to remember how he died for a minute. He died in my arms, but he lived freely.

My family were on a 5 hour trip once and we decided to listen to the most popular songs from the 1900s, 1910s 1920s, all the way up to 2020 and rate them in how much we enjoyed them. This was the 50s song. It was the highest rated. (Probably because we like 50s shows and music. Especially my Dad)

This was my very first favorite song when I was 4 years old in 1987.
I love 50s rock because it gets right into it - no boring opening, ending or bridge - just straight up music that... rocks!

Very true. Bill Haley's Florida Twist was a massive hit in Mexico during the 1950s and his songs were one of the first English spoken songs to be in the top 10 lists on the Mexican airwaves (a decade before the Beatles would do the same). It also help create the Mexican Rock N Roll movement during the early 60s.

In the early days of Top 40 radio when there were relatively few Solid Gold records, this was one of the staples and always enjoyable along with songs like In the Still of the Night and I Only Have Eyes For You. (I was only two years old when this song hit the charts, so I don't remember it when it first came out.)
It seems to me that Alan Freed is the person who does the intro at the beginning of the video. Freed was the first great DJ to popularize this kind of music as more appealing to young audiences than the crooners of the previous two decades. He is credited with inventing the term "rock 'n roll" (in fact tried to copyright it). His frenetic announcing style was also a contrast to the typical low key announcers of the early fifties. Radio was considered a dying medium when Freed broke onto the national scene. He catapulted a movement for a new generation that revived the viability of radio for decades.
Bill Haley and Alan Freed, two icons of the baby boomer generation who paved the way for Elvis, Motown, the Beatles and all the rest.

It helped to have an older brother who went to college to get into broadcasting and eventually end up a famous DJ like the ones we listened to in the 1960's on Musicradio WABC in NYC. He never made it, but I learned a lot about rock and roll and the radio business (especially Top 40) from him. Eventually, my music tastes diverged a bit from his into some Progressive (Moody Blues) and other AOR. But I never forgot those early days of rock, even if some of it was from hearing it played as solid gold.

+roosevelthighschool Alan Freed was a disc jockey, who changed the face of American radio in the 1950's. At a time when radio was believed to be a dying medium against the onslaught of television, Alan Freed introduced a generation of white audiences to r&b by original artists and not homogenized covers by white musicians. After switching stations from WAKR in Akron (which eventually became a Top 40 rock station in its own right), Freed's program caught fire in Cleveland and started to spawn imitators around the country as the baby boomers were coming of age to buy "singles" by these artists. While many of the r&b musicians were black, there were exceptions like Bill Haley & the Comets and soon people like Elvis and many other white rock musicians of various flavors would follow.
Also, at a time when radio announcers were low key and emphasized elocution, Freed was high energy, frenetic, fast talking, often beating out the rhythm of the songs on a big phone book. That attracted the kids of the early 50's even more.
Freed was soon brought to NYC where he had an evening radio show on WINS when it started playing rock and roll (a term that Freed coined and unsuccessfully tried to trademark or copyright). Freed also branched out and started to host big rock and roll shows to big crowds. He also got the top artists because they were loyal to him for not playing the "covers". (He is credited with hosting the first rock & roll concert at Cleveland Arena in 1952, one that saw overflow crowds and lack of crowd control that caused the concert to be shut down.) He even made a few low budget films (I believe the opening to this video is from one of them) that were basically vehicles for rock and roll musicians to play to audiences all over the country in movie theaters. (Think of it as an early precursor to music videos and MTV.)
Freed's career came crashing down at the end of the 1950's because of the payola scandals, which started tainting rock stations because of the impression that records were being played because the DJ's were being paid off rather than because the records were the most popular with the listeners. Rock stations and music recovered but Freed never did. He drifted from small station to small station until he died from complications of alcoholism in 1965.
I was listening to the rock stations in NYC in 1965 and I recall that there was very little tribute on those stations to Freed when he died. He was still too hot to touch. But in 1986, Freed was one of the initial inductees in the new Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It was built in recognition of Freed's role as the "Father of Rock and Roll".
