Is There Somebody Who Can Watch You
1975's Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I preferred it before
We should ring dad more
Lost our house
Hold me close
I stopped by, just to wash my clothes

I know it's me that's supposed to love you
And when I'm home you know I got you
Is there somebody who can watch you?

I know it's me that's supposed to love you
And when I'm home you know I got you
Is there somebody who can love you?

Is there somebody who can watch you?
Is there somebody who can watch you?

Overall Meaning

"Is There Somebody Who Can Watch You" is a song by The 1975 that appears on their second studio album, "I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It". The song is a heartfelt and emotional track about a parent's love for their child, expressing feelings of guilt and remorse for not being around to watch over their child as often as they should.

The lyrics begin with the singer expressing how they preferred things before, hinting that something drastic has happened in their lives that has caused changes. The lyrics then mention how they should 'ring dad more', suggesting that the parent was not present in their child's life before. The singer then goes on to express their need for comfort and affection, saying "hold me close" and "I stopped by, just to wash my clothes". These lines convey a sense of longing for the love of their family, and their desire for a place where they feel wanted and welcome.

The chorus of the song repeats the lines "I know it's me that's supposed to love you, and when I'm home you know I got you, is there somebody who can watch you?" This chorus highlights the heart of the song - the singer's guilt and remorse for not being present in their child's life as much as they should. The lyrics express a deep love and concern for their child's safety and well-being, and their desperation for someone to watch over them when they are not around.

For anyone wondering more about what this song is about... In an interview i watched Matty said this was written for his brother. His brother is younger then him and after his parents divorce he felt as though lost in the mix was how is brother was coping with it. And since the band was about to go big and start touring he could no longer be around as much to look after him. So as a personal message Matty through this on the end of the album so his brother would know.... One of if not THE most emotional voices on a track that I've ever had the privilege to listen to. You can tell it pains him to sing it.

I think this is my favourite song out of all of The 1975's. I don't know, I just think it's different from the rest (they're all great btw) and it kind of puts you in this peaceful/melancolic/daydreaming mood. It's soothing to know that it's ok to feel bad somedays.
