Menswear
1975's Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I only brought three, what you lookin' at me for?
She's dressed in white and putting off crying

Well you're the best man, so what's the plan?
Why don't you talk to Matty about it?

I said, I only brought three like I told you before
We're gonna have to ask about

Free bar, that's the point
Spilling Amaretto 'cause of previous joints
I'm sitting with a girl, fortunate placing
Preceding railing racket off a porcelain basin
Who's he? Giving it the lips?
I've never seen him knockin' about
He looks just like me, but six foot three
So I reckon you could knock him out

Well, I think I'll say a couple of words if you don't mind
I never really got on with your bird the first time
I met her out, dressed in nowt, telling everybody you were shagging about

Well, who's this?
Going for the kiss

I'm probably gonna yosh in your mouth
Because it's five-oh-three, I can hardly see and I'm on the verge of passing out

Overall Meaning

The song Menswear by The 1975 tells the story of a chaotic night out at a wedding reception. The first part of the first verse sees the singer interacting with a girl who is crying while dressed in white. The second part has the best man addressing him to ask about the plan. The singer responds, saying that he only brought three of something and they'll have to ask about it.

The second verse describes the wild party at the reception. The singer mentions a free bar and drops a bottle of Amaretto due to being high from smoking joints. He finds himself sitting beside a girl, and in the background, there's lots of noise and vomiting sounds. Suddenly, the singer mentions someone who looks like him but is six foot three. He wonders if his friend could knock him out.

The chorus of the song features a repeating guitar riff that rises and falls in tone. In the following verses, the singer continues his escapades at the wedding, including witnessing someone who looks like him kissing a girl and almost vomiting due to his drunken state. Overall, Menswear tells the story of an eventful, raucous day out with close friends - something all of us can relate to at some point in our lives.

2:18 “He looks just like me, but six foot three” that line always makes me smile and think of the underrated genius that is George Daniel.

@moonman8567

Why's that?

@YourPalBlondie

love how this song's literally about cocaine at a wedding yet it's still the most beautiful sound i've heard in my life

@AsaOG

Marijuana at a wedding

@cbarnes8691

Asa White True, but to "rail a racket" is to do a line of cocaine.

@raz0rbladewrists

Asa White Its about cocaine. Matty used to be a coke addict.

@Tyndaal604

Ya, “rail a racket off a porcelain basin” just means he was doing a line of coke on the back of a toilet 😂

@kevjson101

He reverences marijuana at the beginning "I only bought three, what you lookin at me for" and in the middle "spillin amaretto cause of previous joints" and then cocaine later "fortunate placin, proceed to railin' racket off a porcelain basin." Thinkin the other guys weren't into blow when he was, and its kind of a secretive thing with this girl he met at the wedding in the song. Still, amazing song. Those things do happen and it sounded like they had a fun night in the song and the bride got over her nerves. :)
