Closer to the Edge
30 Seconds to Mars Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't remember one moment I tried to forget
I lost myself yet I'm better not sad
Now I'm closer to the edge

It was a a thousand to one and a million to two
Time to go down in flames and I'm taking you
Closer to the edge
No I'm not saying I'm sorry
One day, maybe we'll meet again
No I'm not saying I'm sorry
One day, maybe we'll meet again
No, no, no, no

Can you imagine a time when the truth ran free
A birth of a song, a death of a dream
Closer to the edge
This never ending story, paid for with pride and fate
We all fall short of glory, lost in ourselves

No I'm not saying I'm sorry
One day, maybe we'll meet again
No I'm not saying I'm sorry
One day, maybe we'll meet again
No, no, no, no

No, no, no, no
I will never forget
No, no
I will never regret
No, no
I will live my life
No, no, no, no
I will never forget
No, no
I will never regret
No, no
I will live my life

No I'm not saying I'm sorry
One day, maybe we'll meet again
No, no
No, I'm not saying I'm sorry
One day, maybe we'll meet again
No, no, no, no

Closer to the edge
Closer to the edge
No, no, no, no
Closer to the edge
Closer to the edge
No, no, no, no

Closer to the edge

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Closer to the Edge" by 30 Seconds to Mars describe the feeling of being on the brink of something, whether that be a life-changing decision or a realization about oneself. The main theme of the song is about taking risks and facing the consequences of those actions, with the hope of eventually finding redemption. The opening lines, "I don't remember one moment I tried to forget, I lost myself yet I'm better not sad, now I'm closer to the edge" set the tone for the song, as the singer seems to have come to a point in their life where they have gained clarity, even if it was through a difficult experience.

The chorus of the song is particularly powerful, with the lines "No, no, no, no, I will never forget, no, no, I will never regret, no, no, I will live my life" repeating several times. This speaks to the idea that although life may be challenging, it's important to keep moving forward and not dwell on the past. The bridge of the song touches upon the concept of truth and how it can be both freeing and devastating, with the ending lines "Closer to the edge, closer to the edge, no, no, no, no, closer to the edge" emphasizing the importance of taking that courageous leap, even if it feels like you're inching closer to the edge.

13 years and this song still hits hard. For anyone who is going through something tough -- breathe, all will be alright in the end.
