That's ready to begin
See how we roll, see how we roll
I'm trying to compromise
Because with me there are no lies
See how we run, it's already begun
That weighs two hundred tons
I'd like to drop it on you
And watch it all fall through
Nobody knows just what
You're battling inside, you can hide
Nobody knows just why
Most everyone will lie if they need to
The ones who aggravate you most
And happen to be ever close
Seem to be the ones lurching
For the same things that you are searching
The ones that make you feel ill
And you think that nature should have killed
Those you curse when you're alone
Seem to be so close to home
Not an even field to be on
Feels like standing still for eons and eons
Stare it dead in the eye, what now?
All we can do is try to shut it down, shut it down
Not an even field to be on
Feels like standing still for eons and eons
Stare it dead in the eye, what now?
All we can do is try to shut it down, shut it down
In “Eons,” 311 is sending a message to a friend or someone they are close to, telling them that they have a lot of inner turmoil that no one knows about. The first verse tells the person that they have a “wishing well within” that is ready to start granting their wishes. The chorus then comes in with the message of the song: “Not an even field to be on, feels like standing still for eons and eons, stare it dead in the eye, what now? All we can do is try to shut it down, shut it down.” 311 is telling this person that they have to confront their issues and try to shut them down.
The second verse tells the person that they are not alone in their struggles. The people who aggravate them the most are the ones who are going through the same things they are. The ones who make them feel ill are the ones who are closest to home. This verse is trying to tell the person that they are not alone and that they should reach out for help. The final chorus repeats the message that the only thing they can do is try to shut down their issues.
Line by Line Meaning
You got a wishing well within
There's a part of you that longs for something better
That's ready to begin
And it's waiting for the right moment to take action
See how we roll, see how we roll
Let's see where this takes us
I'm trying to compromise
I'm attempting to find middle ground
Because with me there are no lies
I won't deceive you
See how we run, it's already begun
Let's get going
Now that I'm back to a pushing pen
I'm back to my old daily grind
That weighs two hundred tons
Which feels overwhelmingly heavy
I'd like to drop it on you
I wish you could feel the weight too
And watch it all fall through
So we could start anew
Nobody knows just what
It's difficult to see what others are going through
You're battling inside, you can hide
People fight their own private battles
Nobody knows just why
And it's often mysterious to outsiders
Most everyone will lie if they need to
People will lie if it serves their purpose
The ones who aggravate you most
The people who frustrate you the most
And happen to be ever close
Are often the ones closest to you
Seem to be the ones lurching
They are also searching for something
For the same things that you are searching
Similar to what you're looking for
The ones that make you feel ill
The people who make you feel sick
And you think that nature should have killed
You wonder why they haven't met a bad fate
Those you curse when you're alone
The people you complain about in private
Seem to be so close to home
Are often people you know well
Not an even field to be on
It's not a fair situation
Feels like standing still for eons and eons
It feels like time is passing so slowly
Stare it dead in the eye, what now?
Face the situation head-on
All we can do is try to shut it down, shut it down
But all we can do is make an effort to stop it
Not an even field to be on
It's not a level playing field
Feels like standing still for eons and eons
Time seems to have come to a complete halt
Stare it dead in the eye, what now?
We need to confront the issue directly
All we can do is try to shut it down, shut it down
So we can attempt to bring an end to it

If you don't get chills every time at the "Not an even field" part, you're not a 311 fan.
