R.I.P
3OH!3 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This town, used to be a pretty place to stay,
A place you'd stop off from the highway,
But all of those things,
Changed on the day, you packed up your bags and you ran away,
All they say, is how you've changed,
Everyday, I stay the same, so you can keep the necklace
That I gave to you,
I'll keep the shitty tattoos

[Chorus]
I can see it from the other side
The grass isn't always as green
And the house is burned to ashes,
I'm no longer in between,
R.I.P, R.I.P, you, and me.
I can see it from the other side
The grass isn't always this green
And the house is burned to ashes,
I'm no longer in between,
R.I.P, R.I.P, you, and me.

I count, the empty bottles upon the bar,
But I give up I can't count that far,
And the lights in this place,
Are too dim to see,
They're kicking me out, it's quarter past 3,
They tell me, you're all I got,
I just need these dreams to stop,
You can keep the necklace I gave to you,
I'll keep the shitty tattoos.

[Chorus]

And me, and me, and me, and me

In the back of the car,
On the way to your home,
In the pouring rain,
On the side of the road,
In the light of the street,
On the recline of the seat,
You told me I should move on
In the back of the car,
On the way to your home,
In the pouring rain,
On the side of the road,
In the light of the street,
On the recline of the seat,
You told me I should move on

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

"R.I.P." by 3OH!3 is a song about a relationship that has fallen apart. The singer reminisces about how their town used to be a beautiful place until the day their lover left. They observe that everyone keeps saying how they've changed, but the singer feels that they've remained the same. The chorus describes how the grass isn't always as green as it seems, and how the once-beautiful house is now burned to ashes. The singer accepts that the relationship is done, and that both they and their lover have moved on. The verses describe how they're drowning their sorrows in alcohol and how they can't bear to count the empty bottles. The singer also speaks about how they were told to move on by their lover, but they just can't seem to do so.

The song is filled with themes of acceptance, grief, and moving on. It's a bittersweet tribute to a love that is lost, and the singer is left with only their memories and regret. The song is also a commentary on how things aren't always as they seem, and how relationships can be as empty as the bottles on the bar.

Line by Line Meaning

This town, used to be a pretty place to stay,
Once, this town was an attractive destination to visit and settle down in.

A place you'd stop off from the highway,
A rest stop for travelers crossing by.

But all of those things, changed on the day, you packed up your bags and you ran away,
Everything changed when you left town without warning.

All they say, is how you've changed,
All anyone can talk about is the person you became.

Everyday, I stay the same, so you can keep the necklace That I gave to you, I'll keep the shitty tattoos
I remain unchanged while you can keep the fancy gift I gave you, and I'll hold onto my plain tattoos.

I can see it from the other side The grass isn't always as green And the house is burned to ashes, I'm no longer in between, R.I.P, R.I.P, you, and me.
Now that I see things from a different perspective, I realize that our relationship wasn't ideal as it seemed. Now we're no longer together, and it's over.

I count, the empty bottles upon the bar, But I give up I can't count that far, And the lights in this place, Are too dim to see, They're kicking me out, it's quarter past 3, They tell me, you're all I got, I just need these dreams to stop, You can keep the necklace I gave to you, I'll keep the shitty tattoos.
I attempt to count the many drinks I've consumed, but it's too many to keep track. It's dark in the bar, and the staff tells me to leave because of how late it is, saying that the only thing I have left is my dreams, as I separate from you along with everything I own except my tattoos.

I can see it from the other side The grass isn't always this green And the house is burned to ashes, I'm no longer in between, R.I.P, R.I.P, you, and me.
I realize now that things weren't as perfect in our relationship as they appeared, that we've gone our separate ways shouldn't surprise either of us now because after all, things had come to an end between us.

And me, and me, and me, and me
Me alone in isolation, without you beside me.

In the back of the car, On the way to your home, In the pouring rain, On the side of the road, In the light of the street, On the recline of the seat, You told me I should move on In the back of the car, On the way to your home, In the pouring rain, On the side of the road, In the light of the street, On the recline of the seat, You told me I should move on
In the past, we'd been together in the car on the way to your place, it was raining outside, and you told me to move on with my life--twice.

I can see it from the other side The grass isn't always this green And the house is burned to ashes, I'm no longer in between, R.I.P, R.I.P, you, and me.
Now that I understand what the other side is like, I know that things aren't always so wonderful. What we had is over, once and for all.
