Redemption
3rd Strike Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
If I told you that I would never love another?
Build a prison for your soul
With the shelter I provide
Surely we can live forever
Feel addiction take control, I know you'll run away
Reality is just fantasy again
I'd help you find a way to make fantasy, reality again
Would you let me take you home?
Fulfill my every need
Keep you in this spell you're under
'Cause now's the time to let you know
If you only take my hand, never will there be another
Feel addiction take control, I know you'll run away
Reality is just fantasy again
If I could penetrate your soul
I'd help you find a way to make fantasy, reality again
Hold you down again, I won't let you breathe
I see redemption in your eyes
Although I always seem to make you cry
So high off the pain that I give to you
Hold you down till you can't breathe
You can't leave or perceive that you're better off without me
I'll cut you down before you get a chance to doubt me
No love is sicker than the one we found
Keep a frown on your face and you'll never replace me
Feel addiction take control, I know you'll run away
Reality is just fantasy again
If I could penetrate your soul
I'd help you find a way to make fantasy, reality again
Feel addiction take control, I know you'll run away
Reality is just fantasy again
If I could penetrate your soul
I'd help you find a way to make fantasy, reality again
The lyrics of 3rd Strike's Redemption seem to tell the story of a person who is obsessed with someone they love, even to the point of keeping them in a prison of sorts, without allowing them any kind of freedom. The character asks if they would be allowed to control their love interest's every moment, on the condition that they would love no one else. They propose building a prison for the other person's soul, which the singer would provide shelter in, as if implying that they would be the warden in this imagined prison.
The character then acknowledges that the other person would eventually run away due to their addiction to the singer, which plunges them into a fantasy realm that ultimately ends up as a form of self-deception. They suggest that if they could somehow "penetrate" their love interest's soul, the two of them could find a way to make fantasy, reality again. The second verse sees the character become more assertive, asking the other person to take their hand and promise to be the only one they will ever love so that the fantasy may continue. Eventually, the character confesses that they have been causing their significant other a lot of pain and even acknowledges that they bring them to tears.
The song seems to be a cautionary tale about the dangers of obsession and the need to control others. The line "I'll cut you down before you get a chance to doubt me" shows an extreme form of narcissism where the character is willing to destroy the person they love if they ever express a desire to leave. The fact that the song acknowledges the illusionary nature of the fantasy state is an indication that the character knows that what they are doing is probably wrong, but they are still unable to stop.
