Georgia on My Mind
44. Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Georgia, Georgia
The whole day through (the whole day through)
Just an old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind (Georgia on my mind)

I said Georgia
Georgia
A song of you (a song of you)
Comes as sweet and clear
As moonlight through the pines

Other arms reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you

I said Georgia
Oh Georgia, no peace I find (no peace I find)
Just an old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind (Georgia on my mind)

Other arms reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you

Whoa-whoa, Georgia
Georgia
No peace, no peace I find
Just an old, sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind (Georgia on my mind)

I said just an old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind

Overall Meaning

The song "Georgia On My Mind" by Ray Charles is a beautiful tribute to his home state, Georgia. The lyrics express the singer's deep longing for Georgia and the memories associated with it. The opening line of "Georgia, Georgia, the whole day through" sets the tone for the rest of the song. The repetition of the word Georgia emphasizes the singer's devotion to his home state. The phrase "Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind" serves as a reminder of the power that music has to evoke strong emotions and memories.

The second verse of the song addresses another person, perhaps a loved one, and how they pale in comparison to Georgia. The line "Other arms reach out to me, other eyes smile tenderly" suggests that the singer is being wooed by others, but he has his heart set on Georgia. The imagery of peaceful dreams and roads leading back to Georgia further emphasizes the singer's attachment to his home state.

The chorus repeats twice, with each repetition becoming more passionate than before. The final line "Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind" serves as a powerful conclusion to the song, reminding us of the steadfastness of the singer's love for Georgia.

My beloved mother is 89 and has Alzheimer's. Every time I play this for her, she says, "why does he keep calling me?"
Other times when he says her name, Georgia, she says "yes yes yes. Here I am".

Today she's whispering, "this is for me, isn't it.... Shhhhh". She's smiling and blushing as we play this 4 more tines. 🤗💖
