What´s up
4 Non Blondes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Twenty-five years and my life is still
Trying to get up that great big hill of hope
For a destination

I realized quickly when I knew I should
That the world was made up of this brotherhood of man
For whatever that means
And so I cry sometimes
When I'm lying in bed just to get it all out
What's in my head
And I, I am feeling a little peculiar

And so I wake in the morning
And I step outside
And I take a deep breath and I get real high
And I scream from the top of my lungs
What's going on?

And I say, hey yeah yeah, hey yeah yeah
I said hey, what's going on?

And I say, hey yeah yeah, hey yeah yeah
I said hey, what's going on?

Oh, oh oh
Oh, oh oh

And I try, oh my god do I try
I try all the time, in this institution

And I pray, oh my god do I pray
I pray every single day
For a revolution.

And so I cry sometimes
When I'm lying bed
Just to get it all out
What's in my head
And I, I am feeling a little peculiar

And so I wake in the morning
And I step outside
And I take a deep breath and I get real high
And I scream from the top of my lungs
What's going on?

And I say, hey hey hey hey
I said hey, what's going on?

And I say, hey hey hey hey
I said hey, what's going on?

And I say, hey hey hey hey
I said hey, what's going on?

And I say, hey hey hey hey
I said hey, what's going on?

Oh, oh oh oh

Overall Meaning

The song “What’s Up” by 4 Non Blondes is a soulful expression of the struggle for hope, revolution and a search for meaning in life. The song starts out with the line, “Twenty-five years and my life is still, Trying to get up that great big hill of hope, For a destination.” This line presents an image of how life is felt to be a constant struggle and the desire for a meaningful place in the world. The chorus of the song is a plea for answers, where the singer questions about what is going on in the world and why things seem to be the way they are. It is a conversation that is had within and then expressed through a scream, “And I scream from the top of my lungs, What's going on?”

The song dives deep into the challenges that life brings and how it makes one feel. The lyrics convey the idea of feeling not quite right and needing to express those feelings in order to feel free from those thoughts. The following lines express this, “And so I cry sometimes, When I'm lying in bed just to get it all out, What's in my head, And I, I am feeling a little peculiar”. These lyrics convey a desperate need for something more in life, and an attempt to find it by seeking some kind of change.

Twenty-five years
And my life is still
I'm trying to get up
That great big hill of hope
For a destination

I realized quickly
When I knew I should
That the world was made up
For this brotherhood of man
For whatever that means

And so I cry sometimes
When I'm lying in bed
Just to get it all out
What's in my head
And I, I am feeling
A little peculiar

And so I wake in the morning
And I step outside
And I take deep breath
And I get real high
And I scream from the top of my lungs
What's going on?

And I say, hey, yeah, yeah-eah

@urrutiavalen

Wait, does this mean that the original performer of this song IS NOT He-Man?

@defaultuserhandle

Valentin Urrutia Just one of those cases where the cover is better than the original.

@defaultuserhandle

Well it was a joke, but there are plenty of covers better than the original out there.

@defaultuserhandle

The easiest one would be "I Will Always Love You" made very famous by Whitney Houston but was a Dolly Parton song.  Dolly even said that Whitney had more or less owned that song with her version with how well done it was.
