Searchin
5 Elementz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

I used to wonder where you're from
Cause every time I saw you you'd always play dumb
But now I know who you are, the ghetto candy, the neighbourhood star
I'm not the type to be in heat, just waiting for the day that you and I could meet
You're the one that's always fly, never giving me a smile just a plain old hi
They say your [?] is from another place, I got the juice, wanna taste?
I know you can be happy, I know you can love a man that's nappy
And it ain't in my methods but I can visualize you naked
The soulful stacks of vibes, you wanna follow me?
Close your eyes cause I be
Searching, searching, searching, searching
Cause I'm just
Searching, searching, searching, searching
You know I be
Searching, searching, searching, searching
Cause I'm just
Searching, searching, searching, searching
Ask myself where you're at, you be by the laundromat, headphones bumping feedback
First let me explain my name, I know it sounds the same (Yes it does)
[?] you're attractive, let me get your bra size, your name, and your address
Keep the convo, wasn't like she had time for a bro like me
So I'm a go through what I know
Our relations became soft no hold up, interrupted when my pager blows up
Made my way to the payphone, turned around astound like that she's gone
So now I'm
Eh yo, she's out of touch, a new orbit
I heard she did a year got this club called the Orchid
I'm in the place to be but the place to be
Was [?] Heaven and oh boy, I couldn't wait to see
There's no time like showtime and on the center stage
Was the [?] of mine so divine
Her trick name was secret, her nickname was silence
By chance we clapped hands, she laughed at
She looked me in the eye, took her hand to the inner thigh
Why? Stripping ain't that much but there's a difference between a dancer and {aha}
But still, I got the number and we kicked it
But she ain't the type I really want to visit

We got involved, it's not working
Ask me who's down, I don't know because I'm still

Overall Meaning

trying to figure out the girl that the singer is talking about in "Searchin" by 5 Elementz is not straightforward. It seems as though the singer has been trying to get the attention of this girl for some time, but without any success. The girl seems aloof and anti-social, only ever giving him a "plain hi" rather than anything more engaging. The singer is obviously quite taken with her, as he mentions the idea of visualizing her naked, but it's clear that there is more to his obsession than simple physical attraction.

The lack of response from the girl has clearly been playing on the singer's mind, and he mentions that he is constantly "searchin" for her. He knows she hangs out around the laundromat, but beyond that, he doesn't appear to have any leads. He mentions that she's "the ghetto candy, the neighborhood star" which suggests that she might be something of a minor celebrity in her area, but it's not clear whether this is because of her looks, her personality or something else entirely.

Later in the song, the singer reveals that he did manage to track the girl down to a club called the Orchid, where she was working as a stripper. From there, the two of them become "involved" but it's not clear what this involvement entails, or how it ends up not working out. The overall message of the song seems to be about the difficulties of trying to connect with someone who is closed off or difficult to read, and the frustrations that can result from it.
