From their Cocktail Chats (episode 2):
Ashton: “Lie to Me” is about, it hurts when you’re in a romantic situation and the other person is in it for reasons that you aren’t. When your love doesn’t line up.
“Lie to Me” lyrically is totally inspired from heartbreak but attempting to move on.
Sonically the song came about in a really incredible way.
I always wanted a song that had a Police “Every Breath You Take” type guitar mixed in with a groove from a modern, urban song. So we’re writing this rift to something that went skats.
Michael: Kinda like somber lyrics with more like, upbeat tone to the entire song and the like major chord structure.
Luke: The melancholy kind of chords and the “lie, lie, lie, lie.” I think, yeah, just relating it back to my own life.
There was a point of my life I’d play “Lie to Me” about 400 times a day
Calum: “Lie to Me” is a special song to me because of, one, the writing process, and two, the recording process.
“Lie to Me” was actually written the day after we wrote “Youngblood.”
And I remember Ashton and Andrew were sitting on the couch and they had the, “lie, lie, lie, lie” and we’re all like, “Alright, let’s come back in tomorrow and we’ll finish the idea.” And that’s how we got “Lie to Me.”
From their On The Record Apple Music Documentary:
Luke: Breakthrough songs like “Lie to Me” took so long to get to. “Lie to Me” is so unique, and I think that song lyrically and musically, how clever it is, with like mixing the groove with melancholy lyrically with the melody.
Ashton: I feel like vocally it’s been the first time we’ve been able to get our vocals that have been inspired by artists like the Beach Boys and the Beatles; that old-school style harmony which has obviously always been in people’s hearts but they haven’t known how to relay it in modern pop. I feel elated that we get to give that kind of vocal presentation.

I caught you looking, too, but you didn't look twice
You look happy
You look happy
Flashing back to New York City
Changing flights so you'd stay with me
Remember thinking that I got this right
Now I wish we'd never met
'Cause you're too hard to forget
While I'm cleaning up your mess
I know he's taking off your dress
And I know that you don't
But if I ask you if you love me
I hope you li-li-li-lie
Lie to me
It's three A.M. and the moonlight's testing me (oh)
I know that you've been holding on to someone else
And now I can't sleep
I ain't happy, oh
I ain't too happy, oh
Flashing back to New York City
I was dumb, but you undid me
Clash at me, don't run when it feels right
Now I wish we'd never met
'Cause you're too hard to forget
While he's taking off my dress
I know she's laying on your chest
And I know that you don't
But if I ask you if you love me
I hope you li-li-li-lie
Lie to me
Singin'
Li-li-li-lie, li-li-li-li-li-lie
Li-li-li-li-li-lie, li-li-li-li-li-lie
And I know that you don't
But if I ask you if you love me
I hope you li-li-li-lie
Lie to me
The song Lie to Me by 5 Seconds of Summer is a heart-wrenching ballad about heartbreak and longing. The lyrics depict the pain of seeing someone you used to love move on with someone else. The singer saw the person they love looking brand new and happy overnight, and even though they caught them looking back, they didn't double-take. The singer then flashes back to a time when they thought they got everything right, changing flights for this person to stay with them in New York City. But now, they wish they never met this person, because they are too hard to forget. The person the singer loves is now with someone else, and even though they know the truth, they hope the person will lie to them and say they still love them.
The chorus of the song repeats the line "Lie to me" several times, signifying the singer's desperation and desperation for the person they used to love to lie to them and tell them they still care. The second verse of the song continues with the singer stating how they can't sleep at three in the morning because they know that the person they love is holding onto someone else. The lyrics are full of pain and resilience, depicting the aftermath of a break-up that never quite feels resolved.
Overall, the song Lie to Me by 5 Seconds of Summer is about the pain caused by heartbreak and the desire to hold onto feelings that have long since been buried. It is a raw and emotional portrayal of the aftermath of a relationship that never quite reaches closure.
