Lead vocalist Santilla and lead guitarist Campbell met multi-instrumentalist Louis Macklin at a school camp, and he became the band's keyboardist and percussionist. Progress of the band stalled for some time, until 2001 when Santilla and Campbell found each other again in Melbourne and began writing again.
Soon, drummer Ben Dexter joined after coming to know the group through his brother, and bass guitarist Bryan Dochstader joined the group after noticing the group unloading gear in a supermarket car-park and asking them, "Do you guys need a bass player?"
The band couldn't decide on a name for several months until Dexter rang Santilla and asked him, "What's the model of your car?" "HR," Santilla replied. "What year?" "'67." "67 Special?" "Yeah."
67 Special did a six-month residency at the Esplanade Hotel in St Kilda to critical acclaim, and in 2003 signed with Festival Mushroom Records.

I'm not sorry how
This gutter ball diverted
Takin' all the ten pins out
From my seams and unravelled sleeves
Lonely corners in the street
Where they meet, two pairs of jeans
I'll see you there
I'll see you there
All this sentiment
seems now set down in cement
The colours seem much brighter
with the sun shaded out
From my seams and unravelled sleeves
Lonely corners in the street
Where they meet, two pairs of jeans
I'll see you there
Cotton sheets, where they will meet
I'll see you there
Oh I don't mind it
I don't mind it
Oh I don't mind it
I don't mind
Yes and I don't mind
So don't worry darlin'
And I'm not sorry how
This gutter ball diverted
Taking all the ten pins out
From my seams and unravelled sleeves
Lonely corners in the street
Where they meet, two pairs of jeans
I'll see you there
Cotton sheets, where they will meet
I'll see you, there
Oh I don't mind it
I don't mind it
Oh I don't mind it
I don't mind
Yes and I don't mind
The song "Cotton Sheets" by 67 Special seems to be about a person who's in a reflective state of mind as they stroll down the streets of the city. They seem to have taken some wrong turns in life, but instead of being sad, they choose to embrace the experience and cherish the sweet moments. The lyrics showcase a sense of acceptance and contentment with the choices made, and the person is not worried or apologetic about anything. The line "Lonely corners in the street, where they meet, two pairs of jeans, I'll see you there" seems like the person is reminiscing about the past, possibly a time when they were with someone, and they were huddled together in a corner, sharing a moment of intimacy. The lines "All this sentiment seems now set down in cement, the colors seem much brighter with the sun shaded out" could imply that the person has learned to appreciate the good times and let go of the bad ones, and their outlook on life has become more positive.
The line "Cotton sheets, where they will meet, I'll see you there" is repeated a few times throughout the song and seems to symbolize the comfort and familiarity of someone's embrace, a sanctuary from the harsh realities of life. The repetition of "Oh I don't mind it, I don't mind it, yes, and I don't mind" could signify a state of blissful indifference, that the person is content with their current situation and doesn't wish for anything more. Overall, the song seems to be about accepting and finding peace in the choices made in life, savoring the happy moments, and finding comfort in love.
