Anhedonia
69 Chambers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It’s not disgrace
No not deceit
That make a stricken heart expire
Bereft of meaning
Misery on display
It seems best to conclude the fight

But tell me who if not you
Could pull that head out of the noose?

Anhedonia
It ain’t what you say, it’s what you don’t do
Anhedonia
You’ve had it coming cause
The truth is ugly like you

A sugar-coated
Smile won’t do the job
Let it freeze you into cold blind doubt
You play the cheapest
Cheap trick of them all
It seems best to close everything out

But tell me who if not you
Could choose the actions that you do?

Anhedonia
It ain’t what you say, it’s what you don’t do
Anhedonia
You’ve had it coming cause
The truth is ugly like you

You might have given some more blood
Dragged yourself through some more mud
Though you can’t recall ever pushing your luck
It keeps eating you up
You feel stuck
You feel fucked
But you’re not the victim

Slowly the poison the bloodstream fills
It’s not the lies, it’s the truth that kills

Anhedonia
It ain’t what you say, it’s what you don’t do
Anhedonia
You’ve had it coming cause
The truth is ugly like you

Ugly like you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of 69 Chambers' 'Anhedonia' speak about the after-effects of a traumatic experience that leaves the heart feeling empty and hopeless. The first stanza emphasizes that it's not necessarily disgrace or deceit that cause pain, but rather the feeling of being stripped of all meaning, leading to misery being showcased. The second stanza lightly throws blame as it asks who else but the individual can pull themselves out of an emotional noose.

The song continues to emphasize that smiling with a sugar-coated tongue won't make the unbearable pain dissipate. Instead, it's easier to act in apathy, which is why some would rather shut everything out. The chorus repeats itself, stating that anhedonia or the inability to feel pleasure or joy is not just what someone says out loud, but rather the actions they choose to take. The bridge is filled with anger towards the self; the individual seems to regret the lack of action they took to change things. The final repetition of the chorus solidifies the idea that truth is always uglier than lies and that anhedonia can consume anyone, leading them to feel trapped and stuck.

Hitherside

I'm a huge admirer of Tommy's guitar style and precise technique for more than 20 years. To my opinion, he has written some of the best solo's and riffs ever. This song and album proves again that he is a master musician (as is Nina and Diego). Really hope you guys get the recognition you deserve. Awesome work! Hope to see you live soon! Sam - Hitherside

Great project Tommy T. Baron!!!

Oracle Covers

Maddy Madaràsz left the band a while ago, they're now a three-piece band. Other guitarist is Tommy Vetterli. Nina's husband... He's actually the one that recorded or mixed the album, I think. Now, nina's the bass player/lead vocals, Tommy's the guitar player and Diego's always drumming out loud :p
