Low
7. Cracker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sometimes I want to take you down
Sometimes I want to get you low
Brush your hair back from your eyes
Take you down let the river flow

Sometimes I go and walk the street
Behind the green sheet of glass
A million miles below their feet
A million miles, a million miles

I'll be with you girl
Like being low
Hey, hey, hey like being stoned
I'll be with you girl
Like being low
Hey, hey, hey like being stoned

A million poppies gonna make me sleep
Just one rose and knows your name
The fruit is rusting on the vine
The fruit is calling from the trees

Hey don't you want to go down
Like some junkie cosmonaut
A million miles below their feet
A million miles, a million miles

I'll be with you girl
Like being low
Hey, hey, hey like being stoned
I'll be with you girl
Like being low
Hey, hey, hey like being stoned

Blue blue is the sun
Brown brown is the sky
Green green of her eyes
A million miles a million miles

Hey hey don't you want to go down
Like some disgraced cosmonaut
A million miles below their feet
A million miles, a million miles

I'll be with you girl
Like being low
Hey hey hey like being stoned
I'll be with you girl
Like being low
Hey hey hey like being stoned

I'll be with you girl
Like being low
Hey hey hey like being stoned
I'll be with you girl

Like being low
Hey hey hey like being stoned

Overall Meaning

The song "Low" by Cracker is about the highs and lows of life, and the different ways people try to escape or cope with their problems. The singer of the song has a desire to take someone down, either physically or emotionally, and to let go of their problems and let them flow away like a river. The reference to walking the streets behind a green sheet of glass suggests the singer is watching life from a distance, possibly through a window or from inside a car, and feeling disconnected from the world around them.

The singer is also contemplating the different ways they could escape their problems, including using drugs like poppies and being "stoned". However, they ultimately decide that being with someone they care about, like the girl in the song, is the best way to feel low and content. The closing line of the song, "Like being low, hey hey hey, like being stoned", suggests that being with someone you care about can provide a sense of relaxation and escape that rivals the effects of drugs.

Overall, "Low" is a song about the struggles people face in their lives and the different ways they can try to cope with those struggles. It showcases a character who is looking for an escape from their problems and finds solace in the simple act of being with someone they care about.

You aren't too far off, but the context isn't "word"able...

If you are 51 in the handle because of birth year, we have a Hell of a crossover. I'm a 75 raised by a 5 and a 53 but preteen and up raised by some 6 and 62/64/65's, and by raised, I mean they lifted me so I could reach the bar and finish my teenage experience all boxes checked just about the time I completed the 14th year {I got a good head start}

The poppy influenced OH so much of everything we both hold in memories, sonically, from Muddy Waters era {I spent many hours at John Lee Hooker's house doing a wiring job after a fire there, just north of San Jose in Los Altos, close to where I'd be stationed later for the last 13 years flying Combat Rescue for the military till I retired in 2020. {Moffett Field, Mountain View, CA}

I got to pick at HIS axe, on his couch.

He asked to hear MY music, and I said I'd go get my mixtape rom the car {This was 98 or 99, and I was 24 or 25 y/o} and he followed me out and sat in the passenger seat. It was a bootleg my buddy Walkman'ed from Counting Crows, Cracker and the Spin Doctors, 93 or 94 at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz, CA. {post High School and pre-military for me}

He keyed hard on "Low"

He resonated and GOT it, and I knew it.

I "got it" differently in each era/chapter of my own life. It's a new and different re-read each time I let years between the pressing of PLAY |>

This song is an excellent example of a beguilingly simple song very artfully performed. It's extremely catchy the way only the very best four-chord songs can be. A real achievement.
