BOY
78Violet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I called you a sweet, boy
Your nothing but weak, boy
Yeah! You're nothing but weak, boy
I called you a loud, boy
You're only a bad boy
You're just not enough, boy

And I blame your mother
And I'll blame your father
Since you have a brother
I'll blame his mother

I wish I never laid my eyes
On that pretty face of yours
You have a heart that only a mother could love

I wanted a tree, boy
But you gave me a leaf, boy
It's nothing to me, boy
I gave you the world, boy
Without a return, boy
Now I'm just hurt, boy

And I blame your mother
And I blame your father
Now I'm back to wonder
What dragged me under

I wish I never laid my eyes
On that pretty face of yours
You have a heart that only a mother could love
And I wish I never laid my eyes on you
You have a broken heart that I could never touch

I'll plant it and see, boy
Now you watch it grow, boy
Long after I leave, boy
Long after I leave

I blame your mother
And I'll blame your father
Since you have a brother
I'll blame his mother

I wish I never laid my eyes
On that pretty face of yours
You have a heart that only a mother could love
And I wish I never laid my eyes on you
You have a broken heart that I could never touch

I gave you the world, boy

Without a return, boy
Now I'm just hurt, boy

Overall Meaning

The song "Boy" by 78Violet is a retrospective look at a past relationship that has caused pain and disappointment. The song describes the singer's frustration with the "boy" in question, who is characterized as weak, bad, and undeserving of her affection. The singer blames not only the boy himself but also his parents, particularly his mother. She expresses regret for ever getting involved with him and acknowledges that his heart is too broken to be healed by her.

The lyrics suggest a sense of bitterness and resentment, as the singer feels she gave the "boy" everything and received nothing in return. She refers to herself as wanting a tree but only being given a leaf, a metaphor for the boy's inability to meet her expectations. Ultimately, she decides to move on, planting a seed of hope for the future, but not without lingering frustration towards the boy and his family.

Overall, the song represents the experience of a failed relationship, and the feelings of anger, disappointment, and disillusionment that come with it. The lyrics suggest that the singer has come to terms with the situation, but the hurt caused by the boy's actions has left a lasting impact.
