818 Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I've lost my way
Should be getting better but it's harder every day
Can't give-up
I'll see through my fate
Reckless and too young still will never be okay
When we grow up
It wont matter
A younger generation
Who's like you
We never wanted this
We won't be like you
Come on
We're not the same
We don't make the laws but we're the ones you blame
Give-Up
We wont give in
We just want to live our lives our dreams are still the same
Pissing-off the planet
One neighborhood at a time
Ostracized for teenage abandon
Mom and Dad they simply won't listen
Pissing-off the planet
One neighborhood at a time
Teacher thinks I have nothing to say
Says I'm simply throwing it all away
When we grow up
We will matter
Live our lives
Pass to a greater generation
Who will belong
We always wanted this
And we weren't wrong
The lyrics of 818's "Kids" explore the challenges and frustrations that young people face in a world that often seems to want to shut them down. The song presents a picture of a generation that is full of energy and passion, but that is also struggling to find its place in society. The opening lines of the song ("Can't sleep, I've lost my way / Should be getting better but it's harder every day") suggest a sense of disorientation and confusion, as if the singer is struggling to make sense of their circumstances. And yet, despite this, they remain determined not to give up: "Can't give up, I'll see through my fate / Reckless and too young still will never be okay".
As the song continues, the singer begins to articulate some of the frustration and anger that they feel towards the older generation ("We don't make the laws but we're the ones you blame"). They reject the idea that they should simply accept their lot and conform to society's expectations, declaring that they "just want to live our lives" and pursue their own dreams. The repeated refrain of "Pissing-off the planet / One neighborhood at a time" suggests a sense of rebelliousness and defiance, as if the young people are actively rejecting the values and norms of the world around them.
One of the most powerful aspects of the song is the way that it acknowledges the difficulties facing young people, while also giving them a sense of hope for the future. The final lines of the song ("When we grow up / We will matter / Live our lives / Pass to a greater generation / Who will belong / We always wanted this / And we weren't wrong") suggest that the young people of today have the potential to shape the world of tomorrow, and that their energy and passion can be harnessed for positive change.
