for the 1st time in 15 years or so I had a bad CPU that would post and sometimes work. Never had a chiplet design before, but for months I was having hanging/freezing issues even while at desktop...
few times a day would get "clock watchdog timeout" BSOD...
after a month of troubleshooting found out it was my 3900x. ...only ever used pbo, and it worked fine for 3 months or so.... microcenter warrantied it + gave me $88.08 in credit since prices dropped..
100% was the issue. New CPU installed and all issues vanished ..
I was always under the impression CPUs either worked or didn't 😂

That was exactly my situation, and I'm very glad I did the upgrade to X5675. Computer is running happily at 4 GHz, 1.35V with an overclocked 1660 for 1440p gaming. Air cooling with a Hyper 212, 24GB of DDR3 (triple channel!) @1750. Works great, and gave a big boost to overall desktop performance. The upgrade allowed me to put off a full Ryzen build for 2 years or so.

Sam Saraguy i made the same upgrade for my brother. I sold his three 4gb sticks and got him three 8gb 1866 sticks, they ran at Xmp with no problem. X5675 was a massive upgrade over 920, but I guess we lost the silicon lottery haha, it would do 4ghz stable only at 1.375, still fine though, just a bit toasty under deepcool gammax 400. Gpu on the other hand was godsend, snagged a used 1070ti ASUS Strix for 200usd, super cool and quiet, holds 1930mhz at stock easily. Now he has a very capable solid midrange 1440p 60fps high detail gaming pc. I guess Ryzen will have to wait for another year or two, can’t beat price to performance of x58 if you already have a motherboard plus dirt cheap ddr3 ram

I've been on X58 since 2013 and since 2016 I've had a Xeon X5670 @ 4.4GHz (1.375v(?), 22x200, uncore 3600MHz) and I have 24GB DDR3 1600MHz. Currently I have a crappy GTX 960 2GB but I'm planning to upgrade to some used GTX 1070 Ti or GTX 1080. And maybe in 2023 I'll upgrade to some Ryzen system

I have that cpu in my secondary PC, i dont know what motherboard are u guys are using but this mid range msi x58 drmos and 3x4GB low end ddr 1333 CL9 i just enabled turbo core and BCLK up to 166 and i get a ~4Ghz full stress test, if i dont do full load i get 4,1Ghz and up to 4,3Ghz in some cores. Settings are Offset +0.1v QPI 1,3v and Mem 1,55v in bios looking at sensors in OS i think vcore is really around 1,27~1,3v i dont believe the 1,2v reading at full load and the 1,36v maximum i see but probably im wrong.

I am still using the ivy bridge i5 3570s which I recently upgraded for just 30$ from i3 3210 with GTX 1060 and am able to play all modern AAA games at 1080p at high if not ultra settings. Will upgrade in 2021 when DDR 5 motherboards will arrive along with the next gen processors and Graphics card. That would be a huge jump and a real UPGRADE from my current system . Still will be targeting to be playing at 1080p with that new system since the consoles are also becoming very powerful with a kind of a revolution of their own systems.

Are you using the SSD with SATAII? Or are you using a PCIE SATAIII conversion. Your slow bandwidth issues could be from the SATAII speeds. When I upgraded my z800 to PCIe SATAIII it was a huge difference in smoothness of user bandwidth.

Nice video! Running an X5680 at 4.5Ghz, 2000Mhz RAM with a 1080Ti at 3440x1440 UW and it's great! Maxing out the graphics settings and running fast DDR3 really help spread the load to the GPU. I'll admit I think I'm at the limit as far as GPU upgrades are concerned but until then I'll still be living that X58 life. Bought into it when first gen i7's rolled out. How's that for bang for your buck?

Hey, you have your own intro. Cool! (not convinced that you would listen to such music though :)). I have mixed feelings on those old Intel CPU's. Value/$, pretty good probably. But not secure. On the other hand, just installing some common software (hwinfo64, Hardwaremonitor, Speccy) might introduce bigger vulnerabilities than those CPU's. Most people are not aware of it, MS only charges $250 to get low level access with your software and most of those tools have some big vulnerabilities.

planning to do upgrade on my old x58 system
i7 920 to x5675
storage upgrade to nvme using nvme 4x adapter with samsung 950 pro 512 gb (the one that still work with old bios)
ram upgrade from 6gb to 12 gb .. doesn't make sense to upgrade more than that for old system.
hopefully everything work good since it basically low powered compared to i7 920 130 watt cpu ..

#TechDeals help me please: :) im planning to make a pc for my 7 year old son, just for him to start to explore the computer and installing Minecraft and probably CSgo. I do not want to spend too much money. So the build that i planning is a gtx 650 ti 2gb, 8gb 1866 mhz, 120gb ssd, and i was thinking on buying a xeon cpu since they are very cheap. But i have 2 questions: i wanted to mount the computer on a bit fenix prodigy case or a similar one. Is that ok for that type of cpu? The other question is what cpu do you recommend? Can you give some cpu models with different sockets? Do not want 775 socket since i have already 8g ram at 1866mhz . Thanks

I currently use an i7-959 @3.07GHz with 16GB DDR3 1866MHz with an ASUS Sabertooth X58 and a HD 7870 2GB. I upgraded recently from a Core 2 Duo e7300 @2.66GHz and 4GB of DDR2 800MHz and a 8800GT, it was a noticeable upgrade and using x58 and lga1366 era CPUs is not bad at all but yeah if you have anything newer definitely don’t use these unless it’s a backup system. I love my i7-950, it’s a little toasty but plenty of power for most gaming these days and should last a few more years.

I have a question or two if u wouldn't mind answering - I have an Lg Energy Star Monitor = Native Resolution 1024 x 768 Max 1440 x 900, when buying an adapter for the VGA port to the Graphics cards DMI port, I now find I have up to 4K resolution, I can watch 4K movies on YouTube and my games are set at 1440p with well over 60 frames a second. I see the quality change so know it is a fact that the monitor is doing 1440 and or 4K -> how is this?

Second question: As u may remember I stream and now have upgraded to a GTX FOG 1060 6 gb graphics card, as u probably know it is out of the box overclocked and I have added an additional overclock though have not gone to it's limits, average temp when gaming and streaming 45 c Frame, rate again is well over 60 actually is over a hundred when playing doom at 1440 , could this be due to my overclocking my CPU to 3.9 (stable at 4.1 - did not push it to 4.2 though I think it can be easily done) and my 3000 mhz DDR4 now overclocked to 3400?

The Xeon X5675 is not that old, it was born 2011, but Windows XP in 2001. Windows 7 should be suitable best.

About 2 years ago I picked up a T7500 that had the riser on it for $150 shipped. Both CPU's were arguably dogsh1t x5620's (quad core, so, 8 physical), swapped them both out and threw in the X5675's (6 physical each) for what, IIRC $30 a pop. Threw in some more memory (Careful, you're gonna wanna learn to to choose the proper amount/configuration to use all 6 channels properly)... really nice and cheap- I still use this as a work PC after I built another....But I love it, great machine. After I threw in a RX 5700, the thing really woke up... but I learned some valuable lessons... #1 Having 24 threads is great and all (if you've got a few hundred tabs up while playing whatever at the same time as downloading something and burning a DVR) but to my dismay I learned about optimization and how even the most optimized games only use at most like 5 physical, most only using like 2-3.. So all those cores...sitting there... being neglected... Not what I was hoping to accomplish. Even more, out of curiousity I removed the riser card and ran only 1 x5675 ... I got the same performance with Witcher 3, if not a small increase. (For posterity, settings were Pegged graphics on 1080p with no AA... fetched me around 55-65 fps with the RX 5700...Not bad for a $600 system...Get a more appropriate GPU and it'd cost about $450 and have roughly the same performance... 2# Since all those cores are just sitting there doing nothing, your poor graphics card is bored to tears, having a massive CPU bottleneck only feed it so little... While the thing still was really freeking impressive (to me at least) I was losing something like 40-50% performance I would otherwise be getting from the GPU... I'd say a really good match for power with the x5675 would be a 1660 ($175), a rx 590 (roughly $175), or if youre bold pick up an older Sapphire R9 Fury Nitro (there's a dude on ebay with a ton of them, sells them for $80 plus shipping...) I bought two and was blown away with what I got for the money (RN I gave my nephews the RX 5700 and am running 2x Sapphire R9 Fury Nitros, not exaggerating it spanks the RX 5700, even though it's more finicky, required a redicoulous PSU,, and im not even joking when I say it makes enough heat that I sometimes run a benchmark loop for a while to heat the room. LOL ... Plan on spending some money on case fans/sinks/coolers/ etc)

A comparison against a 3600X would be the most interesting IMO. The 8700k iirc performs relatively similar to 9th gen intel, so the comparison against modern Ryzen seems most useful.

As stated, this upgrade option really only makes sense if you already have a X58 and i7-920 and want 6 cores without spending a lot of money. Other than that, just buy the latest PC build that you can afford. Thanks for another interesting video.

Assuming you already have a compatible X58 motherboard, this cpu is great if you want to keep gaming on a budget. However, if you are using it for other things and want/need current gen features, then it's high time to ditch the platform. I'm still keeping my Win7 X5670 build as a backup, but the difference between my new 3600x build on Win10 is night and day while animating/rendering.
It should also be worth noting that some newer titles no longer support older Windows versions. Forza Horizon 4 and NFS Heat for example, only support Win10. I had a rude awakening last year when I tried installing them on Win7 Pro.

If you have a x58 motherboard, the fun is all in overclocking, so you have to buy the 5649 and clock the hell out of it ! these are probably the best binned Xeons for air usage

I am personally running a Xeon but on x79 the E5 2689 8 core for 50€ on aliexpress with and rtx 2060 I have the same performance with better minimum in game but mutch better on everything else

Could you test some simulation games like Cities:Skylines or other slower-paced CPU-bound games to highlight any gains there? A lot of those games would really highlight the differences between architectures as well as the greatest potential for performance uplift.

For instance my Sandy Bridge laptop runs really slow trying to play Stellaris in the late game, but my X5675 @4.2-ish Ghz runs late game almost twice as fast if not faster (difference between roughly 1 month every 2-3 minutes and 20 fps, and 1 month every minute or so and ~50 fps). Of course, my laptop is thermally limited whereas my X5675 is not. Still the real-world gains in performance between upgrade options is difficult to assess since these [types of] games seem like they are often overlooked because they aren't usually visually demanding. (A lot of Paradox-published games slow down significantly for me going into the late game. Hearts of Iron IV and the like slow down even more, around 15-20 fps once battles start up in force towards the mid game).

Anyways, those would be difficult games to test I'm sure, given the lack of graphical fidelity, built-in benchmarks, and the need to play the game in order to assess performance, but maybe something like Civ could be a substitute (even though it's turn-based instead of Real-time?) ?

+1 I wouldn't mind seeing using older generation hardware being used in 2020 since I like many are on a budget and can't imagine thinking of the latest and greatest. I'm actually about to pull the trigger on an aliexpress purchase for a x79 mobo bundle with a e5-2650 v2 w/16GB of DDR3-1866 ECC Ram. To replace my current vintage c2d e8400 windows machine...not so good for windows 10 was okay with win 7 ultimate.

i have x5670 and overclock it to 3.8 still worth it bought it around 20$ and still have my old Asus p6t se this processors are still worth it. not to mention i am on air cool processor
having top tier GPU + having more than quad core most games will be played on high and ultra. stick with 1080p don't go beyond no reason for 1440 unless your monitor are more than 22"

It's worth it if you're not looking for a full build and not doing something like heavy rendering/encoding. Take it from someone who runs a 3900x and a w3670 @ 4.32ghz. Just be sure to disable the meltdown and spectre patches as they can cause a 10-15% performance hit. For daily use and games, it's fine.

If you have more than 300 bucks to spend, though, just save for a new system. This is just if you want a $20 chip and $80 GPU off ebay.

Great video, but yeah there are plenty of channels that specialize in retro hardware that was designed for and runs Windows XP or less. So no to me it is not worth your time to show that on this PC which like you said is actually overkill for Windows XP.

You recommend the Z390 Taichi Ultimate. I hear in the comments on Amazon (3 and 1/2 starts) that Asrock clearly has some deep rooted problems with that board. I'm considering a

With superclocked DDR3 maybe the old platforms like Haswell or Broadwell would give u actually lower latency than DDR4, given that they run at the same clock.
But that price is not gonna worth it
So, if you're on something like P55 - B85 platforms even with i7, just go Ryzen
The hassle of overclocking doesn't worth it for that bit more juice from the rest of the hardware's lifespan
You're gonna meet overheated VRM and stuff like that

i7 3770 k(even i5 3570k) was fine for SP campaigns, MP part is where you get 2x boost to FPS and that on minimum FPS. I hoped from my r7 2700X+ NVME drive much more, yes Origin etc Installation preparation seems faster but not super fast.

Tech Deals I’m still new to pc and can’t really get insanely expensive parts at once I might be able to get a 2600 but I’m not very sure I have a 1650 super 16 gb ram 3200 and a ryzen 5 1400 I’d like to play games at 1080p 144hz you think a 2600 and the parts I have would be great for that?

Unwielding the 1600AF overclocks like a 2600 if your lucky and get it to about 4.2ghz u should be able to get 120+ most games but you’d be better of changing that gpu to a rx 590 or gtx 1660super.

Edit: the wraith prism cooler is about 18£ and it’s a fantastic little cooler for overclocking the Ryzen 5 cpus.

Curious to see as time progresses, if/when games finally use all the cores people have... (Vulkan? dx12?).... Will there be a spike of interest in these 2-4 socket xeon systems from a few years back (That kind of thing already happened- When intel discovered that people were just going and buying older xeons instead of buying the newer i-whatevers that were effectively the same thing ith different packaging...They realized they were in competition with themsleves from the past....Their solution? Nerf the chipsets so they don't overclock. It seems more likely popularity of these even-god-has-no-use-for-all-those-cores newer CPUs will be cheap enough that people wont care.

Compare it to a ryzen 1600 or a new i3 or r3. Obviously the 3600 is going to smoke it.

I'd like to see you put windows xp instead of 10. Period accurate hardware/software make since. As for testing I would test compatibility. Something that has been somewhat broken with windows 7 and shattered with 10. How crysis runs matters with the original version of the game etc. Etc. The more original the better.
