I've lived my entire life in iquique, earthquakes are common for us here, but in 2014 we got hit by the most powerful in a long time, maybe in recorded history in the region. The earthquake was 8.4 in magnitude, although not as powerful as the Valdivia one, it made the ground roar so loud that I thought that earth was splitting in half, this for around 2 minutes, after the earthquake the ground continued to emit a deep sound, like a volcano for maybe a month or more, the first days it was so loud that I couldn't even sleep inside my house. Surely earthquakes are one of the scariest things in this world

another scary thing abt earthquakes is, when you first feel the ground shake, you don't know how bad its going to be. And if its just the first one of many or not. I live in California, and every time i feel shaking, I brace for the big one.
The sound coming from the Earth after is something I never knew abt. Thats interesting. It goes to show, how vulnerable we are on this little rock hurling around in the universe.

Hi! as a Chilean I'm thankful that you show and present my country in that beautiful way, it was very moving. I remember my mother telling me that my grandma said that they couldn't stand up during the earthquake, and that the mountains were moving. It was very catastrophic, and since then the architecture has improved so much that now most buildings don't fall down during an earthquake. So... we're basically used to it by now.

From what I can remember from school, the plate diving underneath its neighbor slows and sometimes stops due to friction, when enough force has buit up the plate moves sharply as it frees itself. It's this sudden movement that can cause quakes.

I was there, at age 9. Even though I was 300 miles from the epicenter, I still remember the waves formed in the street pav, making the parked cars bouncing and dancing 3 or 4 feet high on the top of the waves. there were 2 different strikes, one on May 20th and one next day, May 21st. The first one was very early in the morning, and really I can't remember it. But the second one is still very fresh in my mind, several minutes long and terrible. Chile had also the third strongest quake ever recorded, in Feb. 2010, with a 8.9 degrees Richter scale and a very big Tsunami also. There died around 1,200 people, but nothing comparable with the Haitian one which happened a few weeks earlier in the Caribbean (Jan 2010) and killed 300,000 people, although was just 7.1 degrees in the Richter scale.

as a Chilean, I'm sure we're well aware of how imminent is another mega earthquake, everyone with memory remembers living at least one big earthquake in our lifetime. Now thankfully most of our buildings are resistant and we've had no tsunamis ever since 2010 and although that one of course left a lot of destruction, it's nothing compared to Valdivia's. We're kinda desensitized to earthquakes but tsunamis are... so scary

As a child in the 1960's I was living in Alaska near Anchorage when the Good Friday Earthquake hit. Almost 4 minutes and much destruction, rated at 9.2 but the population was very sparse and loss of life was limited. There is no such thing as "solid ground".

I think that 7.5 in Seattle like 20 years ago bought us some time... luckily for us the fault is 150 clicks past the island into the ocean. And there was that 8.2 in the Queen Charlotte's (or whatever the hell they are called now) only a few years back. A tsunami wouldn't make it past the Juan de Fuca, but maybe sad day for Victoria lol

My great grandmother died in this earthquake, she fell down the stairs when she was pregnant. My grandmother, of only 13 years old and been the older of his 8 brothers and sisters had to take care of them since. Many family members lose their homes. great video btw

I’m from Chile and I would like to say… this is on point, the amount on detail is amazing and really accurate, just some mispronunciations with the names but I understand that Spanish to English words can sound differently. I’ve lived my whole life in Chile and I’ve heard many stories of the 1960 Valdivia earthquake, I’ve experienced many earthquakes myself, some minor ones and the 8,8 2010 earthquake, but never have I imagined how it would be a 9,5 one. My grandparents were on Valdivia when it struck, they were kids, my grandmother remembers the 5 days of absolute chaos that they had to endure to return to the capital, no communication and no transport, my grandmother managed to return by airplane bc her father had a friend in the army that could pick them up in a field that was like 2 days away from Valdivia. Thanks for the accuracy of the video man, really good.

I am from Valdivia, and till this day you can see the consequences of the earthquake on the city. When the tide is low you can see the foundations of houses in the river. I remember hearing from my grandparents, how they saw people literally getting eaten alive by the ground.

@Big D , You're not kidding. I lived in San Diego when Los Angeles had a fairly big earthquake in the late 80's, of about 6.1 on the Richter Scale. (It was in Whittier near L.A.)
I lived in a condo with five levels, and I was at the top one watching TV when the earthquake hit. It was like being in the ocean on a surfboard. You could feel the waves lift you up and down as they passed. It's very unsettling when the ground stability that we take for granted starts moving.

@david graham we had a smaller earthquake last year, it wasnt even a scary one. When i went to visit a nearby lake the next day i was stunned to see it completely dry with two big holes in the middle. Nature is scary man.

@George Michaels , You're absolutely right about that. I live in Gainesville, and there's an old MONSTER sized sink hole here thats famous. It is now part of a Wildlife Park.
Just recently a large one opened up in a yard right by where I was living last summer. A few homes are now off limits to their owners because of the danger.

My grandpa still tells me of how when the ground started shaking he had to lie down and hold onto the thickest root of a tree in fear of the ground opening up underneath him. The house suffered minor paint cracks thanks to the fundament being reinforced concrete
My grandmother was out with the horses at the time, but she must have felt the same dread when all the cows began mooing in alarm
The strongest quake I’ve felt home was 8.4 but nothing compares to the 1960 Valdivia earthquake

@beastmaster415 Yup I remember the Loma Prieta quake in 1989. Tuesday October 17th 5:04pm. I was in the upper deck at Candlestick Park to watch the 3rd game of the World Series. When it first started I said to my brother, my gosh don't these fans know they are shaking the stadium (thinking everyone was stomping their feet just before the players introduction). But man, when it kicked in, it felt like you were standing on cardboard, and not on concrete and steel. Never forget that day in my life

Loved every single minute of the documentary, as a Chilean I can but only be grateful on your craftsmanship of such quality content! Would've loved a mention of Arturo Prat and Miguel Grau in the War of the Pacific section, but the pure essence in which you convey the experience of the Valdivia event is but an artwork, the sheer teluric power that forces us into humility, and the dreadful "yet" a reminder that we are not at the end of history, but active part of it.

If you're looking at it in terms of human energy production, then yeah, it would take an absurd amount of energy. When you look at it from the frame of reference of planetary or cosmic energy production, the amount of energy required to shift the planet is actually a lot less than you'd expect.

The energy produced by every human on the planet combined doesn't even register next to the amount of energy produced by an energetic event like this.

Same happens with other major earthquakes. The sloshing of the oceans slows down the rotation of the planet, but earthquakes deform the planet so it rotates ever so slightly faster. It's tiny changes, but they are measurable.

Supposedly the earthquake altered much of the river that flows through Valdivia. Some parts that were grassy fields are now swamps or small lakes. In my 7 years living here i have never experienced a major earthquake, although i have slept through sever small ones apparently. I also got to see Calbuco erupt in i believe it was 2016. I was able to see it from the school i went to lol. Chile definitely is interesting! from its beautiful scenery to the earthquakes and volcanic eruptions!

I grew up on a volcanic island , a very active lot of volcanoes and it is terrifying ! Quakes , tremors , tidal waves ( we called them that in the 50's and 60's ), more quakes , eruptions ....ugh ! those were hellish times for chile, my grandparents always tell me histories about how the ground was cracking and they couldn't even stand up but even worse were the tsunamis wich destroyed hundreds or even thounsends of houses and the craziest part is that the machine used for measuring the magnitud was going crazy it is still a topic between chileans trying to calculate the real magnitude of that earthquake

I live in Valdivia, where one of the biggest earthquake of recent history happened, and I remember that my grandma would always tell me stories about the day it happened, and the days before and after, she remembers it with such clarity, she took refuge with her little brother on a church, it was what was closest to them, she lived in a rural part of Valdivia so she could watch the mountains move like crazy, she said it felt like it would never end, and there where replicas, that would finish destroying some buildings and making parts of the surrounding area fall, and then it did stop, and it was just chaos everywhere, days after the massive earthquake the riñihuaso happened, and messed stuff up way more by flooding shit up, it was a horrible traumatic experience for her, but she still loves to tell us her stories and the things she's lived through.

She's lived and endured so much, we love her so much, but it takes a toll on her, so passing on her stories to us helps a bit to get it out, she was just a kid when the earthquake happened btw, and was hanging out with her little brother in some woods and got lost and disoriented when the ground started shaking.

Sound of a distant train...I was in the 6.9 earthquake in Seattle in 2001. The first thing I noticed was that it sounded like a semi truck had pulled up outside our house, I got up and started towards the window to see what a semi truck was doing there, by the time I got to the window the whole house was rocking back and forth like a funhouse floor.
Of course, there was no truck.
Every time I hear that deep low vibration now I freeze for a second.

I was shocked at what a 5.1 earthquake can do, the first thing was a load roar like a jet fighter flying really low if you ever heard that sound then the ground and my house and walls and everything rippled like waves in the ocean and to this day I have no idea why nothing was damaged.

Chilean here, my grandparents lived in Valdivia during their youth, earthquake hit them hard, they came to Santiago to start all over again, my mother lived the 85' earthquake and I experienced the 2010 earthquake. In your lifetime you're expected to live at least 3 major earthquakes, they are terrible but here its part of our culture and we maintain calm when its possible.

We also have a very popular drink literally called "terremoto" (earthquake) every gringo I've met loves it lol
