Overall Meaning

The song "Pete Pete" by 9ice feat. Asa discusses the theme of freedom and independence. The opening lines "Ojo re bi ana ta gb'ominira" which translates to "the day we got our independence" sets the tone for the theme of the song. 9ice reminisces about Nigeria's independence day in 1960 and how easy it was back then compared to current times. He compares the current state of the country to "ta rugbo, t'omidan lon dunu pa ti d'ominira" which translates to "when a bird is caught in a trap, it thinks it's enjoying freedom". He questions the concept of freedom in Nigeria and asks if it is truly freedom when the cost of living is high and the standard of living is low. The line "Petepete t'ana ni popa, eni bataba, kolo mofe ni" which means "I prefer a calm life to a life of rushing around" is an indication that the idea of freedom is subjective, what is freedom to one person may not be freedom to another.

Asa's verse in the song adds to the theme of freedom. She talks about how people should not be judged based on their status or wealth, and the importance of being content with what one has. The lines "Kini suuru ti o l'ere? Kini seti ko s'ere?" which translates to "what is the essence of rushing when there is no gain?" reinforces this idea. Asa also talks about living a simple life and not chasing material possessions. The song ends with both artists affirming their independence and the importance of being self-reliant in all aspects of life.

Support restructuring and true federalism or the balkanization of Nigeria. That's the only support that matters.
