One Night
A-Lo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A wise man was telling stories to me
About the places he had been to and the things that he had seen

A quiet voice is singing something to me
An age old song 'bout the home of the brave in this land here of the free
One time one night in America

A lady dressed in white with the man she loves
Standing along the side of their pick up truck
A shot rang out in the night
Just when everything seemed right
Another headline written down in America

The guy that lived next door in three o five
Took the kids to the park and disappeared 'bout half past nine
Who will ever know how much she loved them so
That dark night alone in America

A quiet voice is singing something to me
An age old song 'bout the brave in this land here of the free
One time one night in America

Four small boys playing ball in the parking lot
A preacher, a teacher, and the other became a cop
A car skidded into the rain
Making the last little one a saint
One more light goes out in America

A young girl tosses a coin in the wishing well
She hopes for a heaven while for her there's just this hell
She gave away her life to become somebody's wife
Another wish unanswered in America
People having so much faith
Die too soon while all the rest come late
We write a song that no one sings
On a cold black stone where a lasting peace will finally bring

The sunlight plays upon my window pane
I wake up to a world that's still the same
My father said to be strong
That a good man could never do wrong
In a dream I had last night in America
A wise man was telling stories to me
About the places he had been to and the things that he had seen
A quiet voice is singing something to me
An age old song 'bout the home of the brave in this land here of the free
One time one night in America

Overall Meaning

The song One Night in America by A-Lo is a poignant and evocative commentary on the dark side of American life. The lyrics paint a picture of a country fraught with contradictions and challenges, where sometimes it seems that hope and despair are inextricably intertwined. The verses describe various scenes from everyday life in America, but all of them are marked by a sense of tragedy or loss. The song seems to suggest that although America is a land of boundless opportunity and freedom, it is also a place where dreams can be shattered and lives can be lost in an instant.

The first verse sets the tone for the song, as a wise man tells stories about his experiences in America. This leads into a haunting melody that speaks of an age-old song about the home of the brave and the land of the free. From there, the lyrics paint a series of vivid scenes that underscore the fragile nature of life in America. There is a couple in love, a man who disappears, and a girl who tosses a coin in a wishing well, hoping for a better life. Each of these stories ends tragically, with death or loss.

The chorus of the song reinforces the idea that these events are not exceptions, but rather a reflection of something deeper in American society. The repeated phrase, "One time, one night in America," suggests that these tragedies are an all too common occurrence. The lyrics also touch on the idea of faith and hope, but again, these concepts are tinged with sadness, as they are often cut short by death or disappointment.

Overall, One Night in America is a beautifully crafted song that offers a poignant commentary on life in America. The lyrics are evocative and emotive, and the melody is hauntingly beautiful. The song's themes are universal, and it speaks to anyone who has ever struggled with the contradictions of American life.

Heard this song on the radio this morning on the way to school... took me an hour of searching to find it, but I am really surprised and impressed. I thought this was a new release by a major artist so I'm pretty surprised. It's really cool that this was played on the most popular station in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, once in morning and once in evening commute. It's only up from here!
