At the mere age of 29, A-Trak has had two distinct phases to his winding 11 year career. Stage one: after winning the World DMCs at age 15 (in 1997), he spent years as one of hip hop’s most renowned selectors. After taking over tour DJ duties for Kanye West in 2004, just as he was beginning to combine a bigger variety of sounds into his sets, A-Trak launched into stage two: becoming an undisputed icon for a generation of kids that worship hip hop and dance music alike, and commencing a worldwide boundary-blurring takeover. It all started very early, and developed very quickly, for A-Trak. As a young teenager in Montreal, he would scratch on one turntable for his brother (of Chromeo) Dave’s high school band. He begun practising, “with the discipline of a monk”, and after winning the Canadian, and later World, DMCs found himself an honorary member of Q-Bert’s legendary Skratch Piklz crew. He soon hooked up with DJ Craze and joined another famous scratch troupe, The Allies, and spent half a decade touring as hip hop’s hottest turntablist crew. Five years ago, after a chance meeting with Kanye West at a London in-store, A-Trak performed his first gig with the superstar, without a rehearsal, in front of 12,000 people – and from then on did every show with him for four years. Three years ago, after meeting the rising Chicagoan rapper Kid Sister, A-Trak began dabbling his way into production, which – also by way of happenstance - led to the beginnings of a record label. Ironically named Fool’s Gold, considering how many prosperous treasures it’s unearthed, the label has gone on to become one of the most sought-after imprints on the underground radar: a cross-over idol that’s wildly and unpretentiously united the worlds of club music and hip hop.

I'm old school DJ from Brooklyn NY and started on those wack belt drive Gemini turntables which were cheap and affordable but we when you are 13 y/o money is limited. I started hustling a few years lady and my the time I was 16 I could buy much better stuff and got some Technique 1200's which are direct drive and won't slip. However we ALL used headphones so you can find the f'n spot on the record to cut up but we also would use a magic marker to place a mark on the record and use that as a visual queue but you still need the headphones.

Explanation for the millenium generation and after:
Its not all about the song he performs, its about rhythm, precision, speed and passion. He uses no headfones, means he cant search around for the perfect line he needs. First try need to fit perfect, again and again.
No auto sync, autotune or usb storage involved here. Its more Art like its music.

And those innovations happened because of my generation and allot of stuff we did because like everything we laid the foundation in everything that your generation is doing today....from videogames, music, medicine, scientific discoveries you name it our generation was the first real tech generation and last non tech generation.....i didn't grow up with the tech you did yet I have been to college campuses within these past 3 years courses where teenagers that I would expect to be as good on a pc as me or better because they grew up with the tech get lost the second a cli gets thrown in...so don't use this my gen can check emails bullshit because I have seen a huge generation of idiots using tech at its most basic level that is it...you can use a gui and not extremely well either just at its basic functionality so that argument is stupid...i am gen x technically the first set of millennials but considered and oldhead by your generation...I was in an A+ class that I had to take because i let my certs expire without realizing it and the amount of people that were lost when they had to use basic command and couldn't understand what the path was which is so basic...i felt ashamed to think that a generation of people who grew up with tech really didn't understand how to use it they just look like they do and i am not saying that based off of them not knowing but off the fact that they never got it hell a majority failed the course and i was the only one to get my cert while attending...now there are some in you generation that can use a computer as well as me and some that can do things like code very well which i am very basic at right now because i haven't focused on mastering a particular language yet but i can read it and know what's going on... Guys talented no doubt but he is no craze or kentaro. What most don't understand is that all these guys competing got together before the finals and showed each other their routines (I know mad right) No one thought A trak was gonna be the winner out of the competitors but he def took advantage of others making errors.
A trak kinda pissed off a few turntablists when he tried making out he invented the scratch language system thing....which was total bs lol I think that's why he gets quite a lot of hate nowadays.

hey I'm not sure whos missing what but I think it's amazing that DJ Qbert was told he couldn't compete at the DMV World Finals anymore so he showed up with the 15 year old Canadian unknown and took the cup took the gold and especially when his set talked so much Direct shit to all the other competitors he did an amazing job his first time out at bat and kept it going ever since!!!

Copped this on vhs back in 97 from G-force record store in Atlantic City. I have to say after all these years. The nobody beats the biz routine is and by far the best. He one the title that year and then came "Craze" who eventually one it 3 times in a row. I miss the older DMC battles.

That was His time, great skills, sense of rhythm, perfectionism in all details of a single scratch combined with good surrounded beats and I truly admire him for those 3-4 years of beginning. Sad is that he wasted all of that for being famous and all of that...but anywahay who love and respect music know what i mean. Cheers! ;)
