Newman began his musical career in the 1990s as a member of the Vancouver grunge/pop group Superconductor. After a brief stay, he joined the Vancouver-based pop group Zumpano. The band released two albums with Newman in the mid-1990s, Look What the Rookie Did and Goin' Through Changes, both of which received favorable reviews. Though Zumpano never officially announced their breakup, they have not recorded any new material since the 90s.
Newman is a founding member of the successful Vancouver-based pop supergroup The New Pornographers. The band has released five full length albums since 2000, all of which received favorable reviews. In 2007, Blender ranked the group's debut album, Mass Romantic, the 24th best indie album of all time. Newman is the band's main songwriter and vocalist, and is generally regarded as the band's leader.
His debut solo album, The Slow Wonder, was released in Summer 2004, and his sophomore album, Get Guilty, was released in early 2009. He released his third album, Shut Down the Streets, in 2012.
Drink To Me Babe Then

Through the cracks and now this perfect view,
On the upside, both sides win.
On the downside, we buy, we pull through,
Through the pouring choices rich kids choose,
On a landslide, you ride in.
[Chorus]
Think of me, babe, then.
Lady, we both know what the scores don't show,
Drink to me, babe, then
Now it's come home, held on, held the truth,
Like a threat to point-blank eyes as proof,
You were too shy to lie to.
We're offended, shocked our plan would fail,
Now you've wandered farther from the trail,
On a landslide you ride in.
[Chorus: x2]
The lyrics of A.C. Newman's song "Drink To Me Babe Then" evoke an intimate conversation between two people who have known each other for years, and who reflect on their past experiences and the decisions they made. The opening lines of the song, "Come to me, please, all these years fall through, through the cracks and now this perfect view," suggest that the two people have grown apart but have now come back together to reflect on their lives. The song acknowledges the uncertainty of life, that sometimes hindsight is as clear as a perfect view, while at other times it is unclear as we face pouring choices that rich kids choose.
The chorus of the song, "Drink to me, babe, then. Think of me, babe, then. Lady, we both know what the scores don't show. Drink to me, babe, then," implies that the two people are acknowledging that their lives have not turned out exactly as they planned, but regardless, they are still there for each other. They are still supporting each other in the present and can share with each other their personal thoughts and feelings. The final verse, "Now it's come home, held on, held the truth, like a threat to point-blank eyes as proof, you were too shy to lie to. We're offended, shocked our plan would fail, now you've wandered farther from the trail, on a landslide you ride in," suggests that despite the honesty between the two, there are still unanswered questions and maybe regrets present as they confront the results of their choices.
