Thyresias
A.N.A.E.L. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I, Thyresias, Old man with wrinkled dugs
Perceived the scene, and foretold the rest
I, too awaited the expected guest.
He, the young man, arrives.

After the torchlight red on sweaty faces
After the frosty silence in the gardens
After the agony in stony places
The shout and the crying
Prison, place.

And I Thyresias have foresuffered all
Enacted on this same grave or bed

I, who have sat by Thebes below the wall
And walked among the lowest of the dead

Overall Meaning

In "Thyresias," A.N.A.E.L. is drawing inspiration from T.S. Eliot's poem The Waste Land. The singer in the song is Thyresias, an ancient Greek prophet who is blind and has both male and female bodies at different points in his life. In the opening lines, he introduces himself as an old man with wrinkled breasts and predicts what is about to happen. He has seen it all before and has experienced the same things the young man who is about to arrive will experience.

The second stanza describes what has already happened: "the torchlight red on sweaty faces," "the frosty silence in the gardens," "the agony in stony places," and the "shout and the crying." These are all elements of a chaotic and violent event that has taken place, leading to the young man's imprisonment.
