or like my sister - start mining gold and stone not near to your village, but near to enemy before enemy discovers there is gold or stone :-D you can defeat enemy just by taking his resources as soon as possible, I had strategy against that - build market and cut all trees on map and convert it to stone or gold :-D

in my old neighbourhood when it was like 20 years ago, we used to play aoe2 a lot. using lan cables across to street for multiplayer. anyway, 2 friends of mine they were playing aoe2 regularly and one of them made a surprise attack and almost defeated the other guy in an early game. dude had to flee with only one sheep and one villager. he barely made it the to edge of the map and started a new life, built new establishment only with a villager and defeated the other guy eventually. at that game he never made that villager ever work. that dude rested until the end of the game it was like early retirement lol. still laughing at this story even after 20 years.

Then I'd fly them off to some remote corner and build an epic army of advanced tech there, while my starting position base would be almost entirely defensive / dedicated to resource collecting. I'd let the enemy smash himself against the defenses, then flank attack from the secret base.
Buut we had crap internet so I never even played MP.

I am the one who never give up. I once won that way, had 2 villagers left, found a great spot of forest and a lake that made it only possible for one guy at time to get into my camp, best defence ever... had resourcers, rebuilded, pushed back and 4 hours later I won.

Jesus I'm so trash. I just got AOE 2 and it took me EIGHT hours to beat the Gaul mission as the Visagoths and only because I turtled on the east bank of the Rhone where the Goth AI couldn't skull fuck me to death with 800k houskarls. I tried a few days ago and got better results but it took me ELEVEN hours. Fortunately I was listening to audiobooks and podcasts so it wasn't a total waste.

Gosh the Korean CIV was extremely Overpowered! They could build crapload of war wagons- and there is no unit you can counter them cheap. And their turtle ships shoot cannonballs at an instant speed, unlike super slow cannonball shots from bombards and Cannon Galleys. It always pissed me off, why developers did not fix that unfair difference in canonball speed.

Once I was playing with other enemy empires(4 of them), and they attacked me together and destroyed everything. I managed to flee with just 2 villagers to the other end of the map through my Ally's territory (who was already defeated earlier). Those two villagers, finally led to an establishment of a strong base and then I re-acquired my lost land which had earlier been destroyed by the enemy empires.
I eventually dominated all other empires by growing more strong than all of them.

I guess this applies to Online battlers alone, because you missed Cityplanners & Builders Inc. My military are just gate security for my hundreds of villagers and their daily lives in my planned and well built city. 😂
And all my enemies are actually my allies with whom I do a lot trade too.

Would love to see a massive all-you-can-explore type online map where I can meet like-minded city planners, and not violent armies. I'm not a war person. The only attack I do is garrisoning my villagers into the Town Centers and Watch towers, and waiting for the enemies to get close. If only there was a white flag scenario. Another thing I wouldn'y mind being a feeder city for an army-oriented ally. But again, not a war person. Too much wastage of good, plannable resources. 😂

I mostly just play against the PC, but my favorite thing to do is make a zig-zagged wall maze and leave it open on both ends. IF there is a way into your town that doesn't involve attacking a wall, the PC WILL take it and ignore your walls. So the PC funnels their big army into my little maze and has hell rain down on them by my archers and whatnot. Then when I'm ready to attack, I open the gate nearby and my army freely runs through.

Once i won as a waller. I walled all of my island, built a lot of fields and exchanged food for things i needed. While enemies were fighting each others for ressources. I'm a guerrilla warfare dude. When I play team matches I spread 5-6 villagers into all back sides of the enemy bases, and create 2-3 barracks and 1 workshop on each and start small attacks from all sides, basically is to panic the enemy while my allies clean their bases.

I actually used the wolf and lion riot since aoe, you just use an explorer to attract predators to the area in that the villagers are. Efective, cheap, but takes a lot of time and its risky, so you do that only when you have time.

The Land Grabber - builds his base at his ally's base (I persobally do this because it gives me a weird feeling of unity and security)

The Traitor - betrays his allies at the later parts of the game (I do this with my AI allies)

The Garrisoner - builds alot of towers, TCs, towers, and rams and he garrisons infantry there to confuse the enemy where is his King located (applicable in Kill The King games)

Me in AOE3 against expert AI:
- Move to an inhabited island and stay away from the shores to not get found in early game.
- If there are no islands in the map, go to the edge of the map where there is a bottleneck and fill the bottleneck with towers.

Multiplayer just compiles into who can rush the fastest, doesn’t matter if you have a plan to get to imperial age if your enemy can spam soldiers in the 2nd age

@Ibn Yahud I suppose, but they just need to relax lol. I play online but only in private games with my friends. None of us are serious gamers and we play to have fun, not necessarily to get better. Honestly, we don't play enough to get better.... I'm actually getting worse I think lol

@G. Miles Lenz it's because old farts that game are nearly all bitter people...back when they were young they got bullied for their hobbies or looked at as uncool. These days gaming is cool and mainstream and now in many areas, jocks are the ones that get clowned in school as low IQ morons. Casuals outnumbering hardcore gamers in game wasn't a thing back then as it is now, so obviously some people like to gatekeep.

My style is more "watchtower". I play in defensive by creating as much towers, town centers and castles as near i can the resources (as mines) and use villagers as archers on towers and cavalary to protect buildings and walls (but acting near the towers, castles and town centers) to have archery protection. I upgrade my units the best i can and then make the final atack. Or another atack strategy is by creating castles and towers near enemy resources like stone and gold mines (with villagers as archers and cavalary near the walls) to have the doble efect to give me resources and take them from enemy. Maybe this is not a PRO style, but i think it´s a good way of playing some strategy. But takes time and patience. It´s like the base of the game settlers 3/settlers 4 style (expansion using towers).

I'm mostly for building a wall with just the enough resources to evolve, leaving the defense to towers and a small group of cavalrymen lodged in a castle (leaving only to attack siege weapons).

I'm a mix of waller and never give up. Even now playing AoE 4, When I play with my best friend, I always spare a couple of villagers in his village. If everything goes bad, I just clog his space building a new town behind his walls. We always build at least 2 or 3 layers of walls. We try everything the game offers before army up and attack toggeter. The other day a match lasted about 4 hours and a half. xD

my problem with the boar meta is that if build orders rely so heavily on them that the game is basically over if a scout is cheezing, then its a bad design inherently.

if u played aoe1 in gamespyarcade ( that was the decent way to play multiplayer aoe 1 back then besides tunngle ), you will know that when people build many walls all over, its called painting not walling. Every game session host will indicate at session description the basic lines like " No priests, no painting, no siege no ... etc etc " Maybe my memory turned bad, but I clearly remembered "no painting"

I favor Byzantines or Spanish, with a small but very mobile and fully upgraded army, a giant, sprawling, perfectly planned and laid out city protected by an intricate, mutually supporting system of walls and towers with deeply recessed gates that are a complete death trap to approach. It goes without saying that I only play against the AI, not other players...
