The idea of the Inara focused episode being a Jane Austen-like historical romance rather than pure Western makes me wonder if all of the characters can be tied to different genres. Here's my attempt:
River and Simon are most the Sci-Fi dystopia characters, being from higher society and used to more advanced society while also being well-aware at the human cost of advancement, though Simon's scenes often have hints of medical dramas. In later episodes, River's scenes almost seems like a Superhero/villain origin story.
Kaylee is in a young adult adventure story, with her leaving home, getting to do work she enjoys, while falling in love with a man she would never have met otherwise.
Wash is in a rom-com/sit-com with a laugh track constantly going on in his head.
Zoe is in a military/action movie, and her moments with Wash are calms between storms.
Shepard is hard to pin down, but arguably a little bit more of a mystery. I would almost say he's similar to some Western/Samurai protagonists who wander the world looking for redemption, eventually mentoring a young companion or something similar.
Jayne is more living in a crime story, where he's constantly trying to balance between choosing money and loyalty because he thinks everyone else will turn on him in a heartbeat.
Nishka and Badger are living in gangster movies.
The Alliance is a mix of dystopia, crime, and spy movies.
Mal is the one who probably fits most securely in the Space Western genre, which makes sense since he's the main character and the audience is generally expected to see things from his perspective.

4:25 "He could have taken Zoe (to the ball)."
I'm sorry, but I'm having flashbacks (flashfowards?) to "Our Mrs. Reynolds" and the idea of Zoe in a frilly dress. Zoe would have hit him with the butt of her shotgun if he tried to get her into that pink dress.

The Rich Old Man who saves Kaylee from from the rich mean girls is my favourite minor character in this episode.

Kaylee: Hello.

Rich Girl: Don't um...Have we been introduced?

Kaylee: Oh, I'm Kaylee.

Rich Girl 1: Banning. And this is Dester, Cabott, and Zoe.

Kaylee: Don't you just love this party? Everything's so fancy, and there's some kind of hot cheese over there.

Rich Girl 2: It's not as good as last year.

Kaylee: Oh really? What'd they have last year?

Rich Girl 2: Standards.

Rich Girl 1: Who made your dress Kaylee?

Kaylee: Oh do you like it? When I saw the ruffles I just couldn't resist.

Rich Girl 1: You ought to see your girl.

Kaylee: Shu muh? (What?)

Rich Girl 1: Your girl. She's not very good. She made you a dress looks like you bought it in a store.

Kaylee: Oh. I didn't know.

Rich Old Man: Why Banning Miller. What a vision you are in your fine dress. Must've taken a dozen slaves a dozen days to get you into that getup.
Course your daddy tells me it takes the space of a schoolboy's wink to get you out of it again.

All rich girls rush away

Kaylee smiles

Rich Old Man: Forgive my rudeness. I cannot abide useless people.

@JoannaFinn I'll just touch the subject of your comment, not the whole conversation between Kaylee and older gentleman. I'd just like to point, that much like Inara's line of work is something considered very respectful, so just as well some people may regard screwing around as something NOT respectful. These are two points of view- which speaks to you more is up to you- but "slut shaming" is not what i'd call the reactions of, say, Mal or this elderly gentleman

I love this show EXACTLY because it is not black and white in its way of showing the world, and all points of view are presented unbiased(asaide from pure evil, but aside from that). Example:
Mal hates Alliance with passion, yet in "Buckwashed" the commanding officer, who is personification of Alliance, seems to be pretty normal guy, bound by his rules, that is true, but still at least decent person. Just as we see many people, who are free from any form of structure, being scumbags, thives and murderers, ready to sell their allies for few coins...

Alliance in general brings structure, law, easier lives for those who are not interested in fighting, but also might bring restraints, possible repercussions, invigilation... Pros amd cons. Being free is being master of your own fate, but just as well is dangerous, and there is nobody on your side really. And so on...

And same with this show's portrayal of sexuality, gender roles and how one choses to go about understanding them. There is point of view, that states, that Inara's life is her own, that she is her own mistress, she is highly trained, and so rspectable, because of how much work and dedication went into her polished charm, but just as well, she is a whore to some. Plain and simple. Word is descriptive enough, and mean exactly, what it means. And deep down we do understand this point of view as well, at least certain aspects of it.

Simple as that: some like this world's morals, some don't. And even funnier- there is certain longing of people, who stand on one side of the proverbial barricade. Mal clearly has some kind of longing about belonging somwhere, despite his love of freedom. In the end he is even ready to die for a cause, which does not fit the "rebel".

But so it is with Inara. In "Heart of Gold" Mal spends the night with Inara's close friend, clearly linking to her on deeper level, which makes Inara cry and curl up on the floor in jealousy and heart break- showing she wouldn't mind being "one and only" to Mal. She loves him- yet she also works as protitute. I don't know about you, but in case of most people, that is a bit too much to swallow, while being in proper relationship. If we'd reverse situation, and man would whore himself, and then suddenly a woman he was interested in, spent a night with another man, and that would inititate his break down- people would shrug and say "that is the way you live"- there is choice and there is consequence of said choice. It isn't stated as bad or good- just that it is.

... Unless of course, i have mistaken your meaning, and you just don't like the idea, that some people might have AN OPINION about somebody screwing around, which is valid point of view- has its merits-, and that it is not parallel to yours... In which case my words are lost on you, so ignore them please and move along, because it is quite possible, that we will not get along :)

Badger: Who's that then? Here, look at me. What's your story, love?

Simon: She's just, uh...just a passenger.

Badger: Yeah? Why ain't she talkin? She got a secret?

Simon: No, I'm...

River: In Cockney Accent Sure. I got a secret. More than one. Don't seem like that I tell 'em to you now, do it? Anyone off Titan colony knows better than to talk to strangers.
You're talkin loud enough for the both of us, though, ain't ya? I met a dozen like you. Skipped off-home early. Minor graft jobs here and there. Spent some time in the lockdown, but less than you claim. And you're, what, a petty thief with delusions standing? Sad little king of a sad little hill.

Badger: Nice to see someone from the old homestead.

River: Not really. To Simon Call me if anyone interesting shows up. Walks away

Badger: I like her.

Jayne: That there. Exactly the kind of diversion we could've used.

@Passion of the Nerd
lol. You both did. Definitely.
Also it was interesting either way.

OMG, I called you Liam! Sorry Ian.
I've been talking to 2 different Liams recently, so some chunk of my brain made the completely reasonable assumption that you must also be a Liam.
I totally know you're Ian. I have for years. I guess I've just said the words "Great video, Liam" so many times lately that it will come out at any time for no reason.
Geez Louise, brain. lol.
"Welcome to Boston Pizza. Can I take your order?"
"Great video, Liam. Sorry. I meant to say 'fettuccini alfredo'."

In 'Safe' Kaylee sums up very neatly the emotion behind Inara's expression when Mal says, "I don't respect your job, he doesn't respect you; that's the difference."

"If that's what you think of this life, then you can't think much of them that choose it."

good pairing.

I love that you included the scene of Mr. Darcy being a well-spoken asshat who is so socially awkward that he can't tell when he's put his foot in his mouth. Intersplicing Inara looking all "lets see where this trainwreck goes" only makes it better.

quibily

Juan Casado Y Barton Perfect way to phrase it. He can be so painfully awkward while also being really forthcoming, which is a dangerous combo.

I remember reading P&P, wilting but also bristling at Darcy's speech.

Need more couples in media like Wash and Zoey

There are both subversive in masculinity and femininity but in a way where the less action hero like male character is still a useful hero.

Reminds me of Khalid & Jaheira from Baldurs Gate

@dantezco How could you leave out Leslie and Ben, Jake and Amy, Kevin and Holt, and many other Mike Schur couples? The Taylors from Friday Night Lights were about as close to real and lived-in as any couple on television have ever been. These are all just off the top of my head. I'm sure there are many more. These sorts of couples are overlooked because there's not much drama to them but it's not like there's a dearth of them either.

Can think of Gomez and Morticia, Andy and April, and that's it. How sad, for me and/or pop culture.
