The Shootist, if you're curious, (last role he ever played) is a look at an aged gunman in a modernizing world, on his last legs and trying to escape his own legend for a few weeks of peace before his life is over. All the payoff happens in the last few minutes, so I get why it wasn't popular on release, but tons of amazing cameos and a vibe that really struck me. Totally worth the time if you get a chance.

Been doing a Duke movie night for the better part of a year now, the films never get old, & they’re a moral palate cleanser for the drivel coming out of theaters today. I think Rio Bravo just got pushed onto the plate for this week.

The most important point you make in this video is that the reason gamergate/comicsgate is happening is due to an attempt at social engineering through the entertainment people consume. It’s not an accident these “themes” are being squeezed into every sort medium being produced today, & it sure as hell isn’t organically being produced by the culture. Over a decade ago I sitting at a home of a known Hollywood professional. Who worked on a show you have done over seven episodes on. He kept going on about how all of Hollywood's troubles was due to piracy. Being the right winger that I am, I kept my mouth shut. He wasn't a high level guy, but was very much a team player in a good position. He was repeating what the word was around that very tiny town.
All I was thinking, piracy isn't your problem, content is. But then I was seeing the left wing writing on the wall, back in the STNG days.

As for the left/right struggle in Hollywood, I don't see it as so much as one side vs. another. It's more like some people at the top were fighting for control of the narrative while a bunch of middlemen may or may not be part of that fight and care only about making their movies. There were people who emerged not too long after the collapse of the old Hollywood such as George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. Both men have known to be left-leaning in their political views but with their films, they always focused on film as an art rather than a platform to promote political ideology. So they're not really part of that left/right battle. Their movies would be made no matter who was in charge. Then you have people like Rian Johnson and Spike Lee who's work is more about the politics than the art form itself. While there is nothing wrong with having politics in a film, when the politics overshadows the film itself and becomes the main priority, the film almost always suffers as a result.

We're seeing this in the gaming industry. Just look at Nintendo and their approach to games vs. the crap David Cage shits out. One cares more about crafting a product whereas the other cares more about the message of the product rather than the product itself.

Movies are going through a weird transitional phase right now. With the rise of the streaming services, a lot of people aren't going to the movies to see documentaries, romance films, comedies or anything like that. They're going to see the big spectacle films because it fits better with the moviegoing experience. Take Dr. Strange for example. It was not by any means a film that deserved to win any awards, but I could not imagine not going to the theaters to see that. I think that's how the future paradigm will be. Big budget films will be in the theaters. Lower budget films will be streamed at home. I think that actually might be better since there is a lot more room for competition online than there is in the theaters. I think this was going to happen no matter what, but since Hollywood is destroying itself, it's happening much faster than what they might have been anticipating.

While it may seem weird that a guy in my generation likes films like "Rio Bravo", "Seven Samurai", and others, I was surprised at the fact that Quentin Tarantino sat down when Gilzean (probably mispronounced his last name), got his Lifetime Achievement Award. He does know that people like Gilzean helped to shape his style of writing, and filmmaking, right?

My first few years as an undergrad, I was a “peace-loving” leftie who voted for Obama, got irritated by “the n-word”, etc. Became apolitical and apathetic before the 2012 election and didn’t vote at all. Got re-redpilled around the 2016 election (but not until after the election). In my undergrad, I heard so much insanity from leftist professors and students. Heard a bunch of leftist bullshit as a Masters student too, but ignored it. Universities are fucking deplorable.

This year has been very telling on Hollywood. In a year where we now have the single highest money making movie ever (not counting inflation), and in a year where we have the most billion dollar movies ever, everything else that didn't make a billion dollars has been painfully underperforming. Short of Disney, everyone has lost money on everything.

It's actually kind of ironic, as a child I loved watching movies and I absolutely hated reading books. This was because movies are easy and just involve you sitting your ass down and having time to watch the screen. Whereas, to read a book you have to be able to understand and comprehend what you're reading and how it pertains to the story and not get bored by words and lacking visual stimulus imagery and sounds. Now that I'm older Hollywood sucks more than ever in my eyes and I've developed a sort of fondness of the benefits of reading. It's as if I did a complete 180 on what I value in the entertainment sector of free time with myself. I wouldn't say I hate all movies though, there are some that I do love and feel have comedic or quality merit. Like Stanley Kubrick, Mel Brooks, Francis Ford Coppola, and the Coen Brothers. Still though Hollywood is really upsetting, even as a child I didn't know how truly disturbing it all was but now I consume way less of it.

I don't know if Rio Bravo can be called right-wing, and it's not half as action-packed as your montage, but it is a lot more sensible than High Noon. Chance doesn't go on a lone suicide mission, he recruits his friends and they make careful, strategic moves. It's "right-wing" in that respect — heroism in realism. Absolute masterpiece btw.

The last movie I saw in a theater was The Incredibles 2. My son took me to see it on Father's Day so we could revisit the good ole days when he was a kid. I honestly cannot remember the last movie I paid to see in a theater before that.

I just watched the John Wayne movie The Green Berets the other day and it struck me that every war movie has a Kowalski. Every one. Kowalski is the American military equivalent of all the Welsh regiment in the movie Zulu calling each other by their numbers because so many of them were named Jones.

But then, he didn't get a fancy-shmancy award.....(the ad blitz on Birds of Prey in my area was ridiculous. There was even a full-size cardboard standee in the local 5-screen. Did lousy business anyway.)

I still remember with fondness the lighter scene from "Green Berets." The Duke helped put together the only pro-Vietnam War movie during that time.
The way that it made the point so well that the American soldiers were there to try to help people and it didn't matter at all to the enemy was powerful.

@tony Griego same here. I stopped giving half a damn early on with the MCU. Never liked the DCEU since they rushed it just because Marvel was rubbing Avengers in their face. I think I lost interest in superheroes films due to X-Men 3, the SJW crap was mild but in that film, rubbed me the wrong way.

I've only recently watched you "Hollywood Was Always Red" video and I'm amazed at the things I didn't know, in part because I never looked them up. I agree with a lot of this too. Though, there are still movies where, like High Noon, the propaganda either fails or is so subtle only the insider really takes it in. John Wick, for example, is a lot of fun without dripping in such propaganda, at least not obviously so. Heck, where the new Star Wars really lost it was TLJ, where Rey being an annoying Mary Sue fan insert (that somehow gets consolation priority over Chewbacca after the death of Han Solo) was paired up with other women that always had to be right and get their way and this is painted as some sort of moral practically. They tried to lay on the bullcrap harder and spread it too heavy, causing too much of the audience to balk to avoid being widely controversial.

When you consider that Hollywood is infamous for its total lack of accounting transparency (if you don't find that to be extremely unusual, try that for yourself with the IRS sometime), and is most certainly not a charity, it's clear that a lot of foreign money is coming in from somewhere and probably in much greater quantities than what's been confirmed in the past if they're willing to stoop this low to get it. Also, if you add up the numbers on recent blockbuster films, many things don't seem quite right especially considering all the fudging they do (for example it's customary for some reason not to include marketing costs in the listed budget, which can easily amount to a third of the total).
