FAREWELL
A. A. Owen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't want to see you peeking through my window
I don't want to hear you call me on the phone
I don't want to hear you knocking on my door babe
Adiós, farewell, goodbye, good luck, so long.

Well you put me through my paces like a champion
Like a champion, I jumped through the hoop for you
But that's all over now, go find a brand new sucker
Congratulations dear, I've had the course with you
I don't want to see you peeking.

Well I guess I'll have to get an act of congress
To convince you that our love affair's all through
Every time you snap your fingers I come running
But that's all over now I'm sick and tired of you
I don't want to see you peeking.

Adios, farewell, goodbye, good luck, so long...

Overall Meaning

In A.A. Owen's song Farewell, the lyrics express the singer's final words to their past lover. They make it clear that they don’t want to see or hear from the person anymore. The first stanza starts with the singer not wanting to see their ex peeking through their window or calling them on the phone. They then make it clear that they don't want to hear any knocking on their door and the message is crystal clear - goodbye, good luck, and farewell.

The second stanza's lyrical content is slightly more cutting in tone. The singer speaks about how they have been put through their paces like a champion and they have jumped through several hoops for their ex. However, they are now done and urge their ex to go find a new "sucker". The singer congratulates their ex and claims to have had enough of their antics. They then conclude with a reiteration of the chorus – Adiós, farewell, goodbye, good luck, so long.

So interesting... I quite loved this ending of a character. Watched the show from the beginning and this was actually very appropriate and completely in line with his character.

Don't get me wrong, love Jo as a character also and this was pretty harsh but I never quite felt the true connection between her and Alex the way it was felt with Izzie. Granted, the first 6 years of the show were far better than the last 7 (acting, writing and otherwise). Izzie and Alex were meant to be from day 1 and I have often wondered if the shows writers would ever put the grey's universe in proper alignment again after Heigel's untimely departure. Everything from "Dr. Model" to "...because that's what Jesus would freakin' do!", from Denny to Olivia, George to Lucy, getting married and divorced, cancer and infidelity, all of it was supposed to work out and it finally did.

Bravo to the writing!

Now for the love of God, please end the show already, give each past character (dead and alive) a 10 second cameo, and be done.

Jo did not deserve that. She has been through so much, her childhood, her ex-husband, her mom, and after all that she trusted Alex. She did not deserve that at all. Meredith and her kids didn't deserve that. Alex was such a big part of their lives, he was Meredith's person and he loved her kids, so did they. They did not deserve that and most importantly, his character did not deserve the ending that he got. He was a coward in the beginning, but the person that he became would never have done that. He would have atleast said goodbye to them in person, not through a letter.

It's social media. It ruins the spirituality of it all with lawsuits and intellectual property.

@rmlv so Jo has to get screwed over in the process. How is that fair. Where is the justice for her

But imagine hearing the love of your life tell you through A LETTER that he is in love with someone else.

Izzie and Alex forever

rmlv

Yeah she doesn’t. But he got a happy life with his children. It sucks for Jo but it wouldn’t be fair for her to give up her career and friends for a future shared with another woman. Because like Alex said it, he is in love with Izzie too. Those kids are the winning point. He made the ultimate sacrifice for Jo in the long run.

So you're telling me Alex Karev left his wife and best friend without notice to get back with his ex wife, Izzie, who literally did the exact same thing to him? Yeah, I'm not buying that.

addie

he only left for the kids, he didn’t want his kids to end up like him, without a father

@Daniel Rodriguez I'd rather they killed him off then. Doing something heroic but off screen. He grew too much to do what the character did to Jo. He could have found a way to be there for his kids without doing what he did to Jo.

@Vanessa Vieites its definitely believable. if its not believable to you than you don’t watch the show 😂 rewatch seasons 2-7 babe
