Unchained Melody
A. North Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, my love, my darling
I've hungered for your touch
A long, lonely time

And time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much
Are you still mine?
I need your love
I need your love
God speed your love to me!

Lonely rivers flow
To the sea, to the sea
To the open arms of the sea

Lonely rivers sigh
"Wait for me, wait for me"
I'll be coming home, wait for me!

Oh, my love, my darling
I've hungered, hungered for your touch
A long, lonely time

And time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much
Are you still mine?

I need your love

I need your love
God speed your love to me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to A. North's song "Unchained Melody" are a poignant remembrance of a love that has been separated for a long time. The opening lines express the longing and hunger for the touch of a loved one that has been felt for a long and lonely time. The next few lines convey the feeling that time seems to move very slowly and that it has the power to do so much, including changing the nature of relationships.

In the chorus, the singer expresses a deep desire and need for the love of the one they miss. The lines "God speed your love to me" are a plea for the universe to bring their love back to their life. The following lines compare the singer's longing to the free-flowing movement of rivers that invariably find their way to the sea. The words "wait for me" evoke the promise that no matter the distance or time that has passed, they will make their way back home to their loved one.

I don't know whatever inspired Alex North to write this piece, but in my mind its one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever composed. Whist over 1000 covers of this composition exist listening to it in its raw instrumental form, especially by such a distinguished orchestra is pure pleasure. Thanks for posting - lovely images as well.

Joe Micalizzi

He didn't write it, he did an excellent job of covering it. Look up "Unchained Melody" by the Rightous Brothers.

IMF's Resident Otaku

@Joe Micalizzi He did write the song, with lyrics by Hy Zaret, for the 1955 prison film Unchained, for which Todd Duncan sang the vocals. The Righteous Brothers version is a cover, released a decade later.

@Joe Micalizzi I have no idea how the above post happened, I certainly didn't. Even 3 years ago, I know nothing about music. - Very Odd.
