What is so beautiful about the Carter's, is that when they sang these old Christian spirituals, they actually lived by them and believed in the messages they conveyed. This passionate love for the Bible comes across in their renditions and performance.

Yes indeed. Ms Maybelle played her OWN way. The only person Ive ever known to play her style correctly is my Dad. Sounds like 2 guitars playing together. Its nnot as easy as it sounds. I play - but- I just play my way. This stuff is for masters. Maybe one day I'll get that 2 guitar sound down pat. But I am very happy to hear from you folks and happy to know this simple little tune brightened someone's day. I mean that sincerely. Bless you too! :)

Ah thank you so much! :)) The carter Family did more for people than we can imagine. They taught a lot of little folkies ( like myself when I was a kid) so much as well as country music folks. They had a wide range of content and feeling and lyrics that went so far. Its amazing. Im happy you like this. Im doin alright I s'pose. Wake was this evenin. Funeral tomorra. But Pop is happy Im sure. I miss those days tho. Those bright days. Cozy evenings in the old house. Ill keep that with me.

im sorry to hear ....I miss my Papa more than I can possibly say. Words dont express it. Nothing does. Im so sorry your Grandpa struggled with his illness. Precious soul. Wow,,,,but yes I will definitely keep all of my memories of my Pop. I loved him more than anything. He was larger than life. I appreciate yr words so much. x

It was His creation and He could with it as he pleased. It's going to be fire next time and babies will be automatically destined for heaven as they have not yet sinned and are not accountable.

Did God lie or was he just having a joke ?
Maybe it's just that the Bible is a book of ignorance and stupidity.

@David Lamb He didn't say there wouldn't be floods, what he said was that he would not destroy the world with a flood again and the rainbow he gave as the symbol and promise that wouldn't. When he comes again for the last time to destroy this world, it will be with fire.

Recorded February 14, 1929 at Camden NJ in RCA Victor studio 1. Nothing like the original Carter Family. The Carters cast a very long shadow in music history. Everything they ever recorded is still available 85 years later in recently published DVD's. Incredible musical legacy.

Oh wow...I wish I coudlve seen the Carters. Thats awesome. Theyre such a staple where I live - I guess mostpeople dont think much of ti or they dont truly know how important they are. It doesnt matter if youre religious or not. They did all kinds of songs. I play guitar and fell in love with the "Carter Scratch" playing.But I still cant play quite as well. Who can? hehe! Wow these are the ones gone on before us. If times and people were like they were in these days this hard world we live in today wouldn't be so bad. Times has changed for the worse. It's hard for me to believe that my grandpa has been dead for 24 years!! I look back sometimes and still miss our time and I really miss his wisdom... We lost grandpa at a very young age... He suffered for many years with black lung from the coal mines and he died at the young age of 61... Keep those memories close to your heart my friend!! :) Daniel

I agree someone can enjoy religious music without being religious being a listener. But as a performer you proably should have a some connection to religion, God etc. when you play religous music - whether it is the Carter Family or J. S. Bach - to get an idea what the spirit of the music is all about I guess

This is a wonderful song in may respects, and though I am by no means a music historian, I did own this song/album on CD and I am 99% sure that most of their original recordings are from the 20's, not 30's, 40's.

What many Americans may miss about their music is that this is TRULY the roots of Rock and Roll music -- just listen to it once paying attention only to the guitar part. This group and many groups like them, lost to history, are the origin of our unique American musical heritage.

Obviously, the Carter Family was around for a long time, and much of the music got "tamed down" during the Lawrence Welk era, but this is SERIOUS music, people!
