Keep On The Sunny Side
A. P. Carter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well there's a dark and a troubled side of life.
There's a bright and a sunny side too.
But if you meet with the darkness and strife,
The sunny side we also may view.

Keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny side,
Keep on the sunny side of life.
It will help us every day, it will brighten all the way,
If we keep on the sunny side of life.

Oh, the storm and its fury broke today,
Crushing hopes that we cherish so dear.
Clouds and storms will in time pass away.
The sun again will shine bright and clear.

Keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny side,
Keep on the sunny side of life.
It will help us every day, it will brighten all the way,
If we'll keep on the sunny side of life.

Let us greet with a song of hope each day.
Though the moments be cloudy or fair.
Let us trust in our Saviour always,
To keep us, every one, in His care.

Keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny side,
Keep on the sunny side of life.
It will help us every day, it will brighten all the way,
If we'll keep on the sunny side of life.

If we'll keep on the sunny side of life

My Grandma loved this song. We lost her yesterday. Here’s my tribute to her. The lyrics to this song will be on her memorial card. RIP Josephine Owczarzak 1924-2020

I’ve been dreading this day for all of my life. Today, I lost my biggest fan.

I drove to the hospital sobbing with my guitar in my back seat, prepared to play you your last bittersweet serenade. I was going to play you “Teach Your Children “ by Crosby Stills Nash and Young- the song you taught me how to harmonize to. The one we recorded together. I’m so sorry I was too late Gram. I hope you heard it from Heaven.

You were a saint of a Grandma. You always made sure we had the coolest toys, the softest blankets, and the sweetest treats. You threw the greatest birthday parties, planned perfect vacations, and gave the best back scratches. You were a world-class storyteller and the greatest pitcher of all time. I will never forget hitting those grand slams over the garage.

One of the most important lessons that you taught me, is that dying isn’t always when your heart stops ticking. It can happen long before you swallow your last breath; when you lose the will to live. Some people die long before they’re buried in the ground, but not you. At 96 years old, suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, you kept smiling and laughing and blowing kisses at strangers. Your light shined through until the end and it warmed the souls that you touched. Even the aides at the nursing home said that you were their favorite. You’d forgotten your entire life, could no longer take care of yourself and you still lived with purpose and compassion and happiness.

Your spirit lives on Gram. I’m making sure of it. As I’m going through the photo albums, I’m finding your newspaper clippings tucked between the pages. I can still smell your house in the books that you gave me, and I’m still using the teacups I inherited when you sold your house. I will always summon the words from the songs that you sang- like the old Carter family tune- “Keep On the Sunny Side”- who’s lyrics you lived by. I will forever be grateful to have shared a life with such a beautiful person. I will always be the good friend that you were to me and I’ll always remember how special and loved you made me feel. You’ve always been my angel and I’ll always be your Tommy boy. Good night, sweet dreams, I love you.

I made a Spanish translation of this song:
1. En la vida habrá oscuridad
Tambien habrá sol y claridad
Las tormentas sí pueden haber
Mas el sol también se podrá ver

Permaneced en luz
Siempre donde hace luz
Andad por siempre en la luz
Así nos ayudara
brillar nuestro caminar
Si nos quedamos donde hace luz

2. Estalló hoy una tempestad
Grande fue nuestro dificultad
El ciclón pronto ya pasará
y el sol de nuevo brillará

3. Alabad a Jehová en vuestro ser
aunque el sol ya no se puede ver
Confiemos por siempre al Señor
quien nos cuida a todos con su amor
