@Will Z. Good aks are pretty much indestructable. Most russian rifles are. I have litterally dragged my russian sks made in 1954 through mud and have put well over 10,000 rounds through it and it functions flawlessly and it's as accurate as any other new rife i have and it still has all origional parts aside from the bayonet. Who knows how many rounds went through it before i got it a few years ago. Your ak will most likely still be pumping out that steel shot 100 years from now.

And you do well they will get alot of good work out of you for not very much money thats it. They won't give you a raise because even if you think your an asset they them selves don't value quality so the second you ask for more they will replace you with the next person who will work for 15.

Maggie was very articulate in explaining to the newbies how to examine factory loaded ammo. Mistakes happen in ammunition manufacturing, recalls from all makers have been out there for years!

If one out of 10,00 toasters doesn't work out of the box the manufacturer just shrugs and says "It happens". When you are trying to crank out a few million rounds of ammunition a .0001% failure rate is something else altogether. We are using Dangerous Materials, treat your gun, ammunition, accessories like you were packing your own parachute and intend to jump out of a perfectly good airplane depending on it.

Really good advice. I guess with my experience of inspecting ammo in professional capacity, I just instinctively look over my rounds when I open a box and as I am loading a magazine. I will put a greater emphasis on this now I have heard of problems.

I handload so I can be the one who does the QC on all the stuff I load. I loaded over 30 thousand rounds while practicing some years ago and out of all of it 8 misfires due to junk primers. so I say that is quite good.

I've noticed if you load in ammo, charge the firearm and then drop the mag and rack the slide to clear the firearm enough times with the same bullet it can push your ammo deeper into the brass. So if you don't like to leave your CCW charged in the safe, just make sure you're paying attention to that.

@Maggie : kudos to you for explaining that we reloaders are incredibly safe in our practices. It’s safer than factory ammo, and almost always more accurate, especially if we tailor it to a partIcular gun. :)

That factory ammo cartridge had to have a double charge, not just a compressed load. Any experienced reloader fully understands this. There’s literally no way to look at a completed cartridge and know how much powder is in there, though. So if the manufacturer f’d it up like that, unfortunately there’s no way to know it until it blows up in your hand.

Mark, if you know someone that reloads meticulously and is willing to assist you, I’m sure that they could produce the perfect load for your 1884.

This is good information to know! A person finds brands and versions they have come to trust. All of the ammo manufacturers have hired many new operators. Wayyyy too many folks have been trained to make ammo in the past year or so. Even with the best QC, there will be some issues. As was said, the load the shipping industry has endured will certainly have the potential for problems with less than ideal packaging.

I would recommend doing a physical inspection of all ammunition, and a weight check on each round. Keep a record of the results for future comparison.

Great advice. Digital mini scales are inexpensive and come in handy for many tasks. Get the calipers out as well and keep track of cartridge overall length (OAL). Keep and check your spent casings. If you are unfamiliar have a gunsmith or someone with reloading experience check for signs of excessive pressure or other potential problems. Be very wary of old ammo!

Thanks so much for the awesome video! Once upon a time I was employed by a world class manufacturer. One of my jobs required me to inspect our finished product. Half of the shift I ran the blaster and the other half inspected the finished product ( which were gears of many different sizes). It makes sense when manufacturers are packed to the gills with orders things may get overlooked. Thank again!

In the day it was standard procedure to check all your duty ammo for a high primer. Revolver was loaded , hammer pulled back just enough to allow the cylinder to spin and ammo was checked to make sure it moved freely.

Just bought Herter’s 9mm range ammo at Bass Pro here in Connecticut. $16.99 each box of 50. Limit 5. Mask required. They asked if I needed one, no thank you. Here if you want one. Nobody said anything after that. Don’t be afraid to not wear a mask if required by national stores. They’re not looking for confrontations.

Since there's an ammo shortage, I know companies are trying to pump them out as fast as possible so there's sure to be some company that tries to cut corners and doesnt realize this could seriously injure or possibly kill someone. I'm one of those reloaders that run each round I make through a go- no go gauge. Made a few mistakes when I first started relaoding which taught me a good lesson. I also look at each powder charge before dropping the bullet onto the case. Had a squib load that a buddy loaded one time, I second the comment about only shooting my rounds. Great video!

Ammo has been back, the price has stalled for the last month or so. Here's the trick, buy what you need in the ammo you shoot the most. Don't stock pile the ammo you're shooting constantly. There price will keep going down if we do this.

A similar thing happened back in 2013. I found a number of rounds that were out of spec, primers loaded upside down, bullets crammed in off axis, etc. Hopefully, the manufacturers will build a cache into their supply chain at both ends so MAYBE we can avoid this kind of thing in the future.

Great! (sarcasm) Speaking as an assembly line worker (vehicles) I wrote a book series about the decline and fall of the American work ethic. A lot of it had to do with quality control. (Quality assurance as my factory called it). Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that a decline in work ethic and/or quality control would filter down to American ammunition manufacturers!

When in doubt, throw it out. I reload all my ammo and don't use an automatic reloading press . That way I can feel the way the ammo is being made in each part of the reloading process. I can also measure each round as it is made. It takes longer but what is a few seconds more when safety is the most important thing you need to be aware of when reloading.

@David I use a 550 too, and find a bright light is useful to ensure powder was dispensed into the cases. Squibs are annoying, double charges are a trip to the ER, and I have no intentions of getting hurt by my own reloads.

I've owned and used progressives since 1991. Trust me, I can feel everything in a Dillon 550 or 650, too. The Square Deal B, to me, has far less "feel" than the larger presses, though.

A lot of weapons have been sitting around deteriorating from lack of use, clean and reclean your weapon before loading it at the range. Inspect and check all ammunition as you load it and wear the eye protection as well as hearing protection. Have a great day everybody.

As to the “white box” ammunition previously functioning, but doesn’t now….
Due to the shortage of materials, it may not be the same “recipe” as before. The powder might be substituted with a different powder, the primers may be different and even the bullet might be similar, but from a different manufacturer.
It can still be safe viable ammunition, just different than what was sold before.

Like Hornady Critical Defense, recently I've purchased about 10 boxes of it and the casings were brass instead of nickel plated brass. Shouldn't be a big deal, but I wasn't very amused by that move!

Never thought about checking ammo before. I’ve had misfires before, very rare. Must not be using enough ammo. Factory ammo has always been good for me. I guess this has changed too in 40 yrs. sad that the quality of domestic production has gone down. We used to make the best stuff in the world.

I was reloading some 9mm the other night and I had a case split down the side during resizing and powder drop sequence. I inspect all my cases before reloading them and saw no defects before loading this cartridge....so shit happens be careful at all times.

A bad heat treatment or a hairline crack can be imperceptible until pressure is applied. It's better that you found that bad case on the reloading bench instead of in your gun.

As Terry Wieland points out in his book, "Dangerous Game Rifles," cheap brass can look perfectly good, and yet because of faulty heat treatment or annealing (or whatever), they can have safety issues. They say that Norma makes the highest quality brass in the world, but it is more expensive.

I've handloaded easily 15,000-20,000 rounds of ammo over the last 25 + years. I've had a half dozen or more squib loads but no detonations due to over charging. I have had however a Winchester white box .45 acp load separate at the case head and split the frame on my HK USP 45. HK was great btw and sent the pistol back to me with a brand new frame.

I’ve seen a few “critical failures” in my day. Several involved factory ammunition of known providence. I’ve also got a small collection of (factory) cartridges that are measurably out of spec to the point they won’t even chamber in the guns they are intended for. This is all pre-pandemic, so you can expect things to get worse until things get back to normal…

Catastropic failure. And yeah, defect ammo can and does slip through quality control sometimes. That's why we see recalls. And yes, weak target ammo sometimes fails to function semi auto actions. A once well known semi auto shotgun was notorious for needing hotter and heavier loads to function. Light target loads just didn't have it. And yes, triple check those handloads. It ain't hard to double charge a pistol cartridge case. Plenty of room in there. Use a flashlight to check powder level consistency in the load block on single stage loading. It really is rocket science. Simple rocket science.

I reload my own. Inspect before priming, after priming before powder charge, after powder charge on an electronic scale before seating the bullet and after the bullet is seated for any apparent defects. It takes longer, but I know what’s in my weapon! All this is on a single stage press. I had a Dillion 550 but wasn’t happy with it. Went back to single stage like I’ve loaded with since 1968!

You can double charge a case with a progressive loader too. Or worse get a squib load that can push the bullet far enough into the barrel for the next round to chamber. This is a guaranteed serious shooting accident if another round is fired with a bullet stuck in the barrel. All that's needed for a serious accident are relatives who do not understand that when you are reloading, you are not to be disturbed or distracted UNLESS it is for good reason. Let alone trying to reload when unable to devote undivided attention to what you are doing.

Sorry. Wasn't thinking about the Rem 1100 in particular. Was thinking about an Italian made auto. But it doesn't matter. Some auto loading shotguns need more pressure than the target loads deliver. A Remington 1100 could throw a fit on super light loads too. Remington 1100s that have fired 100s of shells without cleaning the gas system will begin to have failure to eject on light loads that were previously working fine.Flash light and loading block is commonly used when reloading your own ammo. The flashlight lets you see and compare the powder level in the charged cases easily while they are lined up in the load block. This is before the bullet goes in.

About 5 years ago I had a box of Hornady. 17 hmr that split cases when fired and had a bullet lodged in the barrel about 10 rounds into the box. Never had an issue before or since with that ammo. But a good reminder to be diligent!! Check your ammo!!

This year I have had a box of 50 7.62x39 tulammo missing 2 rounds and a suspiciously large amount of a dark powder floating around in the box lol. I also had a 420 grain underwood 12.7x42 overpressure and had to beat the action open and use a cleaning rod to kick the brass out.

I remember being a kid (35 years ago now) and pulling some 22 bullets out the casings and pouring out the powder.

Even then I thought there was something wrong with that.

I once had a !70 Gr round nose 30-30 [Remington I think] loaded backwards in the case [the rest of the box of 20 were ok], and a 45-70 with a 2 inch open crack in it's case. I didn't shoot either.

I had a case rupture with just a Remington 22 a few years back. Memorable.
Most of the incidents as Maggie is describing happen when people try to fire new hot loaded rounds out of old firearms that were not meant for such.
Whatever you are shooting, follow her advice - take the time to inspect your ammo first - be surprised what you may find very occasionally...but it only takes one accident.

Had a factory Sig Sauer 45 a acp case split down the side to the web. Dads 1911 didn’t like it! It felt terrible but luckily no damage to it or anyone. Sig had me send all that ammo back, and they quickly replaced it. And btw the ammo was purchased pre pandemic.

I had a problem with Remington ammo back in early 90s . Had an over charged load and blew up my rifle. Glad Savage fixed and got it back quickly.

I found the shipping issues near the end interesting, especially with the substitute mail carrier story.
Here in Canada I live in a rural town that has door-to-door mail delivery. Up until probably early summer of 2021 our mail carriers were working INSANE hours trying to keep up with mail and parcel volume. It was common for a while to be receiving my regular mail after 5 pm and they were regularly working on the weekends as well.

The pain is real.

I've had Remington 45 acp brass split on the sides near the bottom. At least 2 or 3 per box about 5 years ago. I believe that lot of ammo was over charged in the cases. But no problems with 9mm. I did switch to selier and bellot and have had no problems. It does fire a little hotter than say blazer or remington.

I've seen old but new-in-the-box brass split without being fired. With handguns a split is often no big deal. I've reloaded tens of thousands of rounds of .40 S&W for USPSA pistol matches and the brass will eventually split but nothing bad happens. When those cartridges split it's typically between the mouth and web but not all the way to the mouth. It's just from the brass flexing repeatedly. I can hear a different sound when I drop a handful of fired cartridges onto a wooden table top if there's a split case in it. Rifle cartridges with far higher pressures are a different matter altogether.

Here’s the thing. If they loaded it hot you’re not going to know that without pulling the bullets and weighing each charge. Yes you can look for splits or short OAL but that may not be what deconstructed that gun.

@georgiaridgerunner 79, the failure was ammo-related, and the gravity of the failure was caused by the flawed design of the firearm used.

A pistol could be made to go off like a grenade from an ammo failure, or it can be designed so that the mag blows out of the bottom, the slide stretches laterally, and the lower receiver blows out sideways by the slide tracks. KB guy decided to take the grenade route because all he really cares about is video coolness and impressing the kids. He also seemed clueless regarding the ammo he bought. It was his call.

I trust ammo I loaded myself for my own use, not ammo from these no-name outfits.......I know of a guy whose Glock exploded in his face because of fly by night ammo with a triple charge of powder. It came very close to killing him, but he escaped with his life but had quite a lot of injuries to his hand, arm and face. The pistol's slide grazed his head, the magazine blew out of the frame, and shards of polymer and metal embedded in his body.

David Chiu, Another possibility for catastrophic failure is that in many modern semiautomatic handguns there is an area at the top of the ramp where a portion of the brass is not supported or surrounded by the barrel/chamber. The brass is not completely enclosed as your question suggests. If the brass is brittle instead of ductile, the side of the cartridge near the head (base end) can blow out. When that happens, the pressure is diverted downward toward the magazine.

When you gets seated deeper that makes a pressure spike and can quickly exceed SAAMI. You can quickly increase pressure by reducing COAL. As far as case being cracked. When you fire, the case expands to the chamber size. That seals off the chamber forcing the pressure to push the bullet out of the barrel. When a case is split, the pressure is not contained in the chamber, sometimes the easiest route for the pressure to go is away from the barrel.

The shooting magazines have been showing several recalls on lots of recently manufactured ammunition, especially 9mm Luger/Parabellum. I would Google ammunition recalls if you suspect you may have any of this ammo.

I've been through multiple boxes of 9mm over the last couple years without any issues. However last year I bought a pistol chambered in .45acp and bought 50 rounds of Winchester 230 grain FMJ at the same time. One of the rounds was totally split across the whole side of the cartridge. That was my first box of .45acp. Other than that I haven't had any problems luckily.

I work in a gun store with a range in Florida. We've had tons of issues with ammo lately. Haven't seen any catastrophic failures but plenty of problems.
