Torigoth/Night (2:39) (loop length: 2:05) — ACE
Area track
4/4, 95BPM
D Major

This piece’s melody is the same as Torigoth.

This plays in Torigoth (in the main game) during the night.

---

The night theme of Torigoth doesn’t have the day theme’s lowered 7th. Instead, it’s got a much more homey major-key mood, one of sitting by the fireplace or (both in- and out-of-universe) playing video games long into the night. It loses a little bit of the day theme’s loop, especially at the end, but the soft bongos and more prominent guitar are perfect changes to the instrumentation. The twangy sound of the steel guitar at the start is interesting — I’m not sure on how well it fits with the rest of the piece, but for a short break between each go at Tiger! Tiger!, I do prefer it to the day theme’s intro.

If I ever need something to cheer me up, I put on the extended version of Torigoth Night. No matter how sad or angry I am, this song makes everything just… melt away. This is peacefulness in its purest form. It uses the relentless optimism of the day theme’s melody and chooses to mellow it out to create something that exudes chill. The first few seconds introduce an almost lo-fi like instrument, which then mixes with the more traditional acoustic guitar and flute to again give the piece a unique sound. It’s a peaceful song, but you never get the sense the city is asleep. The melody can’t help but slip into the sense of liveliness that carried over from the day theme, and the drum keeps pushing the song along. Torigoth is a city so filled with people and culture that it never truly sleeps. It’s never a dull city and the song replicates that amazingly. Torigoth Day is one of my favourite songs not just in XC2 but in the Xeno series as whole, and somehow, I think the Night theme is even better. This is the perfect night/day duology of city themes in this franchise for me. They take entirely different approaches to representing Torigoth and are both incredibly memorable and distinct, even removed from one another. These are songs I’ll never forget and are the textbook example of what I think jrpg city themes have the potential to be.
