I'm demi and had the same experience of being confused why everyone was so sex obsessed, and coming from a religious background, I genuinely didn't understand why people struggled to not have sex before marriage because it wasn't hard for me until I started dating my current boyfriend. We had been together for about 2-3 months and then I was like "oh shit, I'm experiencing sexual attraction! I didn't realize I wasn't before. Yep, this is very difficult." It's because some people see asexuality only as a 'lack of' something and don't understand how or why a 'not-sexuality' can still be celebrated as part of a person's identity. Obviously this thinking is dumb because then, like, blind people couldn't point out their blindness as a part of their identity because that's 'just a lack of sight', or people with blue eyes couldn't consider it anything special because although only 8% of people in the world have blue eyes it's 'just a lack of' pigmentation :/

While I have fewer friends, I have deeper friendships. I never understood dating "just for fun" or make-out/sex buddies, so I've had fewer romantic relationships but partially because I classify that differently. I appreciate the representation, but I am disappointed in the constant recycling of garlic bread and food jokes rather than our community shining light on deeper stuff like that. Something I find funny is that I'm ACE, and yet understand innuendos. But when I worked at a bakery, the female baker told me to think of the racks that came straight out of the oven and couldn't be touched as a super hot famous person (her example was Henry Cavill). And my first thought was 'but why would I think of that rack as Henry Cavill? Is he dangerous? Maybe she means Henry Cavill with a gun. THAT would make me want to avoid him'. I only found out later that people usually think of their celebrity crushes as untouchable, and so thinking of the rack as a hot cele was supposed to make the rack untouchable. That type of phrasing is commonly used for asking someone about romantic relationships. Of course, it’s easy to misunderstand if you’re not used to hearing it.
It’s used either for good ol’ teasing, acting ‘cute’ by being indirect (they talk like that normally or “tell me x thing without telling me x thing”), or are trying to avoid stepping on the person’s toes cause there are people who react negatively to being asked directly (like when asking an unemployed person if they found a job yet).
A part of humans like subtle metaphor stuff, playing word games and doing the whole ‘read between the lines’ thing in conversations

Discovering that Asexuality was a thing was probably one of the best things to happen to me. It felt amazing to find out that it was normal to have never felt any sort of attraction to anyone at all. I have four identities: Trans, Non-binary, Asexual, and Aromantic. Honestly, I hate it. It’s frustrating because I’ve been labeled as narcissistic before for simply trying to figure out who the F I am. I have no interest in sexual relationships. I have no interest in romantic relationships. Gender is nice, but not really 100% needed for me. But I’ve been told that I’m too much, or too complicated.

It's like all of those people who are cisgender, allosexual, alloromantic, and straight. That's just so many things to be! Honestly they sound a bit narcissistic for having so many labels. They're just too much and too complicated.

Obvious sarcasm, but in all seriousness though, your labels aren't too much. Everyone has a ton of labels whether they realize it or not, they're just the words we use to describe how we feel in connection to other people. Deciding that multiple LGBT related terms apply to you only sounds weird to people who assume that cis/allo/straight are the default, which they're not. If people are saying things like that to you, even if they're not intending to be disrespectful and just speaking on subconscious prejudice, there is a certain amount of bigotry in the way they're thinking. It's not your job to make them feel more comfortable with their bigotry, it's their job to work towards overcoming it. Don't worry about them. Don't let them make you hate who you are.

Unicorns don’t show up nearly as much in fiction, and are usually treated in story as an elusive creature near impossible to find, a rarity.

For the Newbies just coming to terms with their potential Asexuality…… pay attention to the whole “maybe it’s not the right Label, but if it feels right right now it’s the right Label for Now” thing, it’ll make you sooooo much happier. 👍

When I was around 17yo I tried confessing to a much older Family Friend (I was her go-to last minute Babysitter for her two pre-schoolers at the time) about being potentially Asexual (I was feeling confused, because I wasn’t interested in “adult Funtime” but I kept getting ‘crushes’) and they scoffed at it, which made me depressed & made me climb back into blanket fort.

I now know I’m Hetero-Demisexual, which is still classified as Ace, but Asexual was a good fit at the time & I would have been so much happier if I had embraced it. 🤗

On a note more related to the actual comment, thanks for sharing your story. I’ve been questioning my sexuality and I think I might be Asexual. But I still find people attractive and have actually had two or three crushes in my day, so I’m not sure. My best guess rn is that I’m Asexual Panromantic but that might change.
Question, is there a word for people who are attracted to androgynous people? Your gender doesn’t matter to me, if you cross-dress or are androgynous I’m attracted.

Sorry if this is off topic, but I just really wanted to share somewhere about how I decided to come out as asexual to most of my friends:
I took a picture of a night sky with lots of black, purple and, blue and I put it in Ibispaint x so I could put a gradient of the asexual flag over it. I started with the gradient at 18% (you could only see if you looked really hard) and every third day I upped the visibility by 3%. I finally got to 64% (hard to miss) before one of my friends was like "hey the colours on your background look like a pride flag" and i just stared at them until they were uncomfortable and said "that's the point", their reaction was very funny and wholesome

Honestly? Mooooood. I questioned for absolute ages. It’s hard thing to try and figure out but now that I’ve accepted that I’m ace, every thing seems a bit brighter in the world. While I can’t possibly know if it’ll help your mental health too, know that you’ve got a super supportive group of aces in your corner to back you up. Even if you’re not super confident with the label yet or if you realize one day that there’s a label that fits you better, we’re still here for you. Questioning is a valid part of the journey too. OT, I just gotta say, I’m so glad that I discovered your channel when I did. I first started watching your videos sometime last year, when I really began to figure out my identity. Since then, I have been able to accept myself and come out to my friends as nonbinary, panromantic, and asexual. I have also began to help some of my friends while they figure out their identities, and most recently, I found that one of my friends was aro/ace, and I feel so grateful to have formed a stonger friendship with him. I'm in a queerplatonic relationship with an trans aroace and let me tell you, they make a lot of sex jokes, and it's a thing I've seen a trend with all ace people I've come across, just because they don't feel it the way others do doesn't mean they avoid it at all costs, they can make dirty jokes, they can get into relationships, they can even have adult fun times sometimes, but they're still aro and they're still ace

not even gonna lie, that last one (with the cards) nearly made me cry. i haven't come out to my dad yet and that video was so unexpected. i can say this 100 times over but it stays true: parents can be allies and support their children, and/or they can be proud, flaunt it to other parents and be open about it. although if you think you know someone's sexuality and you think they are coming out to you don't interrupt them or when they do come out don't say "i know/knew" or "okay" because some of my ex-friends said that and it just made me feel bad. also i think one more thing people need to realize is that asexuality is a spectrum and there's tons of different labels along the spectrum and usually asexual is an umbrella term. :) drink some water, eat something (even a small grape or piece of bread or a cracker), take a shower if you need to, and stay safe. you are loved and valid

Even us queer people have work to do to be good allies to one another. Some people even say discriminating stuff about their own group, sometimes without realising it. Support is always an ongoing process that can be uncomfortable, because it challenges our prejudices and forces us to acknowledge our past mistakes. And if we are not careful, we can project our frustration at the injustices we face onto other queer people instead of directing it at the institutions who keep us down. I think this is sometimes encouraged intentionally by these institutions in an attempt to play us against each other. The only way to avoid falling for this, which I myself had to learn, is to reject the comfort of entitlement and to stand together with those who need the same support we do. It is hard, but it is necessary.

Thank you. I needed to see this as I’ve had issues trying to be a good ally for my friends and brother as I’m also questioning my place in the LGBTQIA+ community. It helps to know that sometimes other queer people can make mistakes when it comes to our fellow community members and that it’s not inherently our fault.

Like I'm not Ace but Red's (from overly sarcastic productions) explanation of how she found out she was ace and what it means to her is probably the best explanation I've ever found of what it's like to be queer and why it can mean so much to find something that clicks with you.
It boggles my mind that anyone would think that Aces aren't part of the rainbow/queer community.

The one about trying out labels being valid really hit me. I ID'd as ace for a long time before I realized that was just gender dysphoria in disguise. Sometimes I feel guilty about being wrong about myself like I was undercutting other people's identities by being a faker, but it's nice to see support from the community even though I don't belong there anymore.

Self-discovery shouldn't make you feel guilty! People are complex, and one's sexuality, romantic attraction, gender identity can all change as well over time - or not, but both are equally valid! It's all a wide spectrum, never feel bad about learning something new about yourself. And if anyone dare say otherwise... steal their garlic bread, that'll teach them some manners.

...Wow. Someone else replied to me, thus dragging me back to this year-old video, and here I find you sharing an experience that I only recently realized I also have. I am asexual. I know that for certain, even if I'm not sure what kind. But I thought my body just wasn't wired to get a lot of sensation down there. A few weeks ago I realized that no, that's probably gender dysphoria manifesting as dissociation. I now have an appointment with a gender therapist to try to get physical transition started because I have a pretty high libido, so being able to get proper sensation down there would make a huge difference to me.

If you don't mind, how did gender dysphoria disguise itself in a way that led to you mistaking it for asexuality? I'm just curious.

@@sarahvunkannon7336 I'm FTM and very gay, and the way that straight guys interact with girls is extremely gendered, probably more so than any other gender combo for romantic/sexual interaction. Looking back, even as a teen I was definitely interested in boys, but interacting with them always resulted in this visceral revulsion that I didn't have words for at the time (it was social dysphoria). I think over time, instead of growing into my actual sexual identity the way most teenagers do, the very idea of being sexual with someone became associated with those feelings and I became functionally asexual, not even really able to access the feelings of attraction from behind the layer of disgust at the very idea of being seen as a woman.

Once I put together the pieces of my gender identity though, it all came crashing down. Early in my transition I had the thought "wait, if this goes well, gay men could be attracted to me??" and suddenly I was able to access that part of myself again, and this time as an adult, so I'm much more capable of understanding and accepting my own feelings.

Hope that was helpful, or at least interesting. Good luck on your own gender journey, and remember that it's ok to become whoever you become, whether that's a big change or just a small one 💙💕🤍💕💙

I remember someone telling me that finding a relationship would be hard, at least a long-term one, because I am ace. Like, she went on to explain that couples fall apart if they don't have sex or something like that. Like man, your life must suck so much if you and your partner don't love each other enough that not having sex is your downfall, what a sad life. If sex is one of the only things that can hold your relationship at a tolerable level, let alone a happy one, then I do not envy allo's. I want a relationship where we love each other as people, and not just for each other's bodies, like, that's so shallow

Which kinda makes me understand how allos don't get what it's like. I have a very hard time imagining what it must be like for them, so the reverse must not be easy either. Except they don't need to explain it to most people they know, because their thing is the one that's expected by people.

1) Out of appreciation for helping me gradually feel a bit closer to the final answer as to whether I am aro as well as ace or only ace over the time of watching many of your videos, I feel it's high time I finally subscribe. (Also, I have known I was ace since basically the beginning. Even called myself asexual long, long before I'd ever heard the term used for the way I was intending it... Which caused me to quickly change to calling myself "non-sexual" - until ace became a more known term in recent years - when a middle school boy asked me "so you have sex with yourself?".)
2) When you get an ad for freaking condoms on a literal ACE meme video... You gotta wonder if it's the algorithm or the advertiser that's the dumb one.

Out of all the things I’ve known about myself, I’ve known I’m Ace for the longest. And while I’ve come to question this label a couple times, even dropping it once because I realized something else about myself that I thought contradicted my Aceness, it’s something I feel very comfortable calling myself. I am Asexual.

Also shout out to all my fellow Demiromantic Asexuals out there!
