13 Perfect Fit
AFI Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What was it I was thinking, or was I even thinking at all?
When I think of what I thought back then
Then I'm ashamed and I'm appalled
That I gave up all I ever was so easily
Living your life is not for me

I won't be sedated, I won't be sedated
Give me a little taste and I know, I won't want more
I won't be sedated, stability is overrated
Give me the disorder I adore

What was it you were thinking, or were you even thinking at all?
When I think of what you thought of me
I take offense and I'm appalled
That you could discount all I love so easily
Living your life is not for me

I won't be sedated, I won't be sedated
Give me a little taste and I know, I won't want more
I won't be sedated, stability is overrated
Give me the disorder I adore

I can't be a part, be a part, I can't be a part
I can't be a part, be a part of your modern world
I've gotta be apart, be apart, I've gotta be apart
I've gotta be apart, I don't grasp the values that you hold

I can't be a part, be a part, I can't be a part
I can't be a part, be a part of your modern world
I've gotta be apart, be apart, I've gotta be apart
I've gotta be apart, I don't grasp the values that you hold

I can't be a part, be a part, I can't be a part
I can't be a part, be a part of your modern world

I've gotta be apart, be apart, I've gotta be apart
I've gotta be apart, I don't grasp your values

Overall Meaning

The Perfect Fit is a song about rejecting the societal pressures to conform and live a "normal" life. The lyrics express a sentiment of refusing to live the way others expect and instead, embracing the chaos and disorder that comes from following one's own path. The verses suggest a sense of regret for past decisions, seemingly driven by a desire for acceptance or a fear of standing out. The chorus, however, asserts a strong sense of individuality and self-reliance, rejecting the idea of being sedated by conformity and seeking the disorder that comes with living on one's own terms.

The song's message can be interpreted in different ways, but one possible reading is that the singer is rejecting the idea of a conventional, stable life in favor of a more authentic and unpredictable one. The lines "Give me the disorder I adore" and "stability is overrated" suggest a preference for living in the moment and taking risks rather than seeking security and predictability. In the context of the album Sing the Sorrow, The Perfect Fit can be seen as a turning point, where the band moves away from their goth punk roots and embraces a more expansive and experimental sound.

Checking in 10 years later and still bump this cd!!

@fudgemonkeyz69

Selling out consists of playing music you're told to play rather than what you want to play. These guys still play what they want to play.

@blanktv

I don't worry too much about "selling out." I try to find music/bands I like and enjoy them while they last. This concert is one of the greatest shows I ever saw. Watching the way they performed that night, we all knew they weren't going to be an underground band much longer. So, I congratulate them on their success and wish them well. And I play the hell out of their early albums. :) sunset BlankTV

@AFIBlackSails241

@BlankTV In 2009 In Toronto alone I saw them play A Single Second, Totalimmortal, Days of the Phoenix, Love is a Many Splendored Thing, This Secret Ninja, and Triple Zero! The crowd went absolutely nuts with Triple Zero! It was awesome! You should deifinitely go to one of their shows again. I still see the same punk band I saw 12 years ago, just their writing style has changed. :D
