A Winter
AFI Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Warn your warmth to turn away
Here, it's December
Everyday

Press your lips to the sculptures
And surely you'll stay
Love like winter
For of sugar and ice
I am made
I am made

It's in the blood
It's in the blood
I met my love before I was born
He wanted love
I taste of blood
He bit my lip, and drank my warmth
From years before
From years before

She exhales vanilla lace
I barely dreamt her yesterday (yesterday)
Read the lines in the mirror through
The lipstick trace (Por siempre)

She said, "It seems you're somewhere, far away," to his face

It's in the blood
It's in the blood
I met my love before I was born
She wanted love
I taste of blood
She bit my lip, and drank my warmth
From years before
From years before

Love like winter, oh, oh
Love like winter
Winter
Three, four

It's in the blood
It's in the blood
I met my love before I was born
He wanted love
I taste of blood
He bit my lip, and drank my warmth

From years before
From years before

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to AFI's "Love Like Winter" may seem cryptic at first, but upon closer inspection, they appear to be telling a story of a love that is cold and dangerous. The opening lines, "Warn your warmth to turn away, here it's December everyday," set the tone for the song, conveying a sense of icy isolation and impending doom. The singer seems to be warning their love to stay away, but simultaneously acknowledging that they are powerless to resist the pull of this frigid season.

The lyrics continue to describe a love that is both sweet and deadly, with the repeated phrase "It's in the blood" suggesting a primal, almost vampiric connection between the two lovers. The lines "She said, 'It seems you're somewhere, far away,' to his face" further emphasize the sense of distance and detachment between the lovers, with the woman expressing a sense of frustration and heartbreak at her partner's emotional unavailability.

Overall, "Love Like Winter" seems to be a meditation on the paradoxical nature of love itself, with its capacity for both warmth and cruelty, passion and indifference. The song's dark, Gothic overtones perfectly capture the mood of a winter romance gone awry.

@likeolikeh5807

Listened to this album in 2007.

I was probably only 10 years old. My family moved across Canada over the summer. I bought this album at a Walmart with my own bottle money/allowance. I had a cd walkman my brother gave me.

We moved back across the country again. But it was in the middle of winter.

I'll never forget listening to this album while driving through the Rocky Mountains.

I turn 25 in two months. I still listen to this album. :)

Fun fact: I was Adam Carson's Uber driver yesterday, and ironically enough, I was listening to Leaving Song Part 2 & Love Like Winter on the way towards picking him up. We talked about Tesla (I drive a Tesla Model 3), CM Punk using Miseria Cantare in AEW, and he even gave me a pair of his drumsticks to take home. Stand up guy. I quit Uber right after; it would be quite the story to tell my kids and grandkids how I was an Uber driver at some point in my life and the very last passenger I ever served on Uber was Adam, one of my heroes from AFI. Love ya Adam, love ya Davey, love ya Jade, love ya Hunter!!!! Thank you for everything and molding me into the person I've become today!

@babydollsparkle1236

That's awesome. Was Adam hot in person?

@Nodes805

Back Jan 2017 AFI had an album release at Amoebas in Los Angeles.. I went to the back to use the restroom and suddenly Jade opens the door to use the pisser next to me.. I hollered Oh Shit It's Jade! Dude is tall AF atleast next to me

@danypunk09

Ha - About to turn 61 and just discovered this band. Better late than never...

Update: This still sounds great to me, as I turn 64. Advice from an old man: Don't ever let that number define you. You can stay young inside if you keep your mind open. And, listen to your children's (and grandchildren's) music without saying 'it was better in my day.' They will appreciate it, and you may just discover something new that you absolutely love.

@patrickwatkins6616

They put on a great live show if you ever catch them on tour

@racnmiller

Have you ever given HIM (that's the band's name) a listen? You might enjoy them as well. I suggest Killing Loneliness. Or Wings of a Butterfly. Both good songs by HIM.
