They then broke into the mainstream with their sixth, Sing the Sorrow (2003), which peaked at number five on the Billboard 200 and remained on the chart for 51 weeks. The album was supported by popular singles "Girl's Not Grey" and "Silver and Cold", both of which peaked at number seven on America's Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart in 2003. "The Leaving Song Pt. Sing the Sorrow was certified Platinum by the RIAA in 2006 and is AFI's best-selling release, having sold over 1.26 million copies as of September 2009.
AFI's seventh album, Decemberunderground (2006), debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and featured the hit single "Miss Murder", which topped the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart and reached number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100. Another single, "Love Like Winter", reached number four on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. One day through the rain I heard him meekly moan, he said
"Will you wrap your arms around me as I'm falling?"
Remember when remember when remember when we were all so beautiful?
Never again never again
But since then we've lost our glow
He said, "I now feel more desperately alone, even though they wrapped their
Arms around me as I'd fallen."
Remember when remember when remember when we were all so beautiful?
Never again never again
But since then we've lost our glow
Remember when remember when remember when we were all so beautiful?
Never again never again
But since then we've lost our glow
They said it hurt their eyes, but he would never know that they were claiming
Regret as their own
Their own dissipated
The lyrics of AFI's song "The Boy Who Destroyed The World" tell a story about a boy who used to be beautiful, but has lost his vibrant glow because someone took it from him. The first few lines paint a picture of a beautiful boy with a vibrant glow. However, due to the actions of someone, the boy's beautiful glow is gone. The next lines showcase the boy's vulnerability when he asks someone to wrap their arms around him as he falls. It is as if he no longer has any strength to hold himself upright.
In the next verse, the song talks about how people said that the boy's beauty hurt their eyes, but they were filled with regret because they were no longer beautiful and could not match up to him. The boy, however, was not privy to this information and felt alone despite people holding him as he fell. The last lines of the song repeat the lyrics from the first verse about remembering when they were all beautiful and the loss of their glow. This repetition emphasizes the loss of beauty and the yearning for it to be regained.
Overall, "The Boy Who Destroyed The World" is a poignant song that explores the themes of loss and beauty. It takes one through the journey of a boy who loses his vibrant glow and is left to pick up the pieces on his own. His vulnerability and loneliness in the face of loss are relatable to anyone who has ever experienced any form of loss or low self-esteem.
