AFI Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't waste your touch, you won't feel anything
Or were you sent to save me?
I've thought too much, you won't find anything...
Worthy of redeeming

Yo he estado aqui muchas veces antes y regreso

To... break down, and cease all feeling
Burn now, what once was breathing
Reach out, and you may take my heart away

Imperfect cry, and scream in ecstasy
So what befalls the flawless?
Look what I've built, it shines so beautifully
Now watch as it destroys me

Y regreso aqui otra vez y comienzo

To... break down, and cease all feeling
Burn now, what once was breathing
Reach out, and you may take my heart away

Break down, and cease all feeling
Burn now, what once was breathing
Reach out, and you may take my heart away

I left it all behind, and never said goodbye
I left it all behind, and never said goodbye
I left it all behind, and never said goodbye
I left it all to die

I saw its birth, I watched it grow
I felt it change me
I took the life, I ate it slow
Now it consumes me

I... break down, and cease all feeling
Burn now, what once was breathing
Reach out, and you may take my heart away

Break down, and cease all feeling
Burn now, what once was breathing

Reach out, and you may take my heart away
Heart away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to AFI's The Leaving Song Pt. 2 describe a person who is struggling with their own feelings of worthlessness and wondering whether or not they deserve to be saved. The first few lines read as though he is speaking to someone else, someone who may be trying to reach out and help him, but he warns them not to waste their touch because he won't feel anything. He questions whether they were sent to save him in the first place and then admits that he has "thought too much" and that they won't find anything worthy of redeeming.

The lyrics then shift to the singer reflecting on their own imperfections, wondering what happens to the "flawless." They describe something beautiful that they have built but that is also destroying them. The singer then admits to leaving it all behind without saying goodbye, a decision that still haunts them. They describe how they watched this thing grow, change them, and ultimately consume them. The song ends with the repetition of the chorus, "break down and cease all feeling, burn now what once was breathing, reach out and you may take my heart away."

Overall, the song seems to explore themes of worthlessness and self-destruction, as well as the struggle to accept help and the consequences of leaving things behind without properly saying goodbye.

I’m 34 going on 35 but I remember when it aired on Vhl and MTV. I forgot the other channel it was on but I’ll never forget watching it. I also played the song on my electric guitar one time while watching the video. Good times for sure!
