The Leaving Song Part II
AFI Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't waste your touch, you won't feel anything
Or were you sent to save me?
I've thought too much, you won't find anything...
Worthy of redeeming

Yo he estado aqui muchas veces antes y regreso

To... break down, and cease all feeling
Burn now, what once was breathing
Reach out, and you may take my heart away

Imperfect cry, and scream in ecstasy
So what befalls the flawless?
Look what I've built, it shines so beautifully
Now watch as it destroys me

Y regreso aqui otra vez y comienzo

To... break down, and cease all feeling
Burn now, what once was breathing
Reach out, and you may take my heart away

Break down, and cease all feeling
Burn now, what once was breathing
Reach out, and you may take my heart away

I left it all behind, and never said goodbye
I left it all behind, and never said goodbye
I left it all behind, and never said goodbye
I left it all to die

I saw its birth, I watched it grow
I felt it change me
I took the life, I ate it slow
Now it consumes me

I... break down, and cease all feeling
Burn now, what once was breathing
Reach out, and you may take my heart away

Break down, and cease all feeling
Burn now, what once was breathing

Reach out, and you may take my heart away
Heart away

Overall Meaning

The Leaving Song by AFI is a song about destruction and allowing oneself to break down completely. The song suggests that there is beauty in destruction and pain, and that sometimes it is necessary to allow oneself to feel these things in order to move forward. The opening lines of the song, "Don't waste your touch, you won't feel anything, or were you sent to save me?" suggests hopelessness and the feeling of being unable to feel anything. The line "I've thought too much, you won't find anything worthy of redeeming" suggests that the singer has analyzed their own life and found it lacking, as if they don't deserve to be saved or redeemed.

The lyrics are full of references to destruction and burning, such as "To... break down, and cease all feeling," "Burn now, what once was breathing," and "Now watch as it destroys me." These lines suggest that the singer is willing to allow themselves to be destroyed completely in order to start anew. The line "Look what I've built, it shines so beautifully" suggests that the singer has created something beautiful in their life, but it is ultimately destructive and will lead to their downfall. The final line, "I left it all behind, and never said goodbye," is perhaps one of the most poignant in the song, suggesting a sense of regret for not saying goodbye to something that they have lost forever.

I’m 34 going on 35 but I remember when it aired on Vhl and MTV. I forgot the other channel it was on but I’ll never forget watching it. I also played the song on my electric guitar one time while watching the video. Good times for sure!
