The band first reached substantial commercial success with their fifth album, The Art of Drowning (2000), which peaked at number 174 on the Billboard 200. They then broke into the mainstream with their sixth, Sing the Sorrow (2003), which peaked at number five on the Billboard 200 and remained on the chart for 51 weeks. II" was also released as a single, reaching number 16 on the chart. AFI's seventh album, Decemberunderground (2006), debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and featured the hit single "Miss Murder", which topped the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart and reached number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100. Another single, "Love Like Winter", reached number four on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. The album was certified Platinum by the RIAA in 2013.[6] Decemberunderground was followed three years later by Crash Love (2009), and then four years later by Burials (2013); both albums were also successful, peaking at number twelve and number nine, respectively, on the Billboard 200. The band's tenth and latest album, AFI (The Blood Album), was released in 2017, and peaked at number five on the Billboard 200, making it their second-highest chart position.

but you never show me your true self.
How can you ever expect someone else to know you
when all you're going to do is just pretend
you're someone else?
You keep on sayin' that you want to show me that you're really different,
but you're just the same.
you're just one of them, or maybe it's just a game.
You lie to yourself
You lie to yourself
You lie to yourself and remain alone.
You lie to yourself
You lie to yourself
You lie to yourself and remain alone
Remain alone
Remain alone
I'm not exactly sure of your motivation.
I'm not exactly sure what you're tryin' to do.
All I'm really sure is that you're not too impressive
and you're wearing a mask that I can't see through.
Maybe you're not looking for acceptance,
maybe you're striving for something more.
If it's status that you lust then why try to be one of us?
You're someone we'll never trust 'cause
we know the score.
You lie to yourself
You lie to yourself
You lie to yourself and remain alone.
You lie to yourself
You lie to yourself
You lie to yourself and remain alone
Remain alone
Remain alone
I can't see through
I can't see you
I can't see through
I can't see you
The lyrics to AFI's song "Yürf Rendenmein" are a commentary on authenticity in relationships and social interactions. The singer is addressing someone who claims to want to be known and accepted, but is not being honest about their true self. They are accused of being "mindless" and "just like everyone else" because they are not genuine in their interactions. The singer sees through this façade and is calling out the person on their lack of authenticity.
The chorus repeats the line "You lie to yourself and remain alone" which suggests that the person's lack of honesty is isolating them from others. The song is a warning that we cannot truly connect with others if we are not willing to be vulnerable and show our true selves. The line "If it's status that you lust then why try to be one of us?" implies that the person is trying to fit in with a certain group or social hierarchy, but their lack of authenticity is preventing them from truly belonging.
Overall, "Yürf Rendenmein" is a powerful commentary on the importance of being true to ourselves in order to connect with others.
