AFX Lyrics

[Spoken]
We held hands on the last night on earth.
Our mouths filled with dust, we kissed in the fields and under trees,
Screaming like dogs, bleeding dark into the leaves.
It was empty on the edge of town but we knew everyone floated
Along the bottom of the river.
So we walked through the waste where the road curved into the sea
And the shattered seasons lay,
And the bitter smell of burning was on you like a disease.
In our cancer of passion you said, "Death is a midnight runner."
The sky had come crashing down like the news of an intimate suicide.
We picked up the shards and formed them into shapes
Of stars that wore like an antique wedding dress.
The echoes of the past broke the hearts of the unborn
As the ferris wheel silently slowed to a stop.
The few insects skittered away in hopes of a better pastime.
I kissed you at the apex of the maelstrom and asked
If you would accompany me in a quick fall,
But you made me realize that my ticket wasn′t for two.
I rode alone.
You said, "The cinders are falling like snow."
There is poetry in despair, and we sang with unrivaled beauty,
Bitter elegies of savagery and eloquence.
Of blue and grey.
Strange, we ran down desperate streets and carved our names in the flesh of the city.
The sun was stagnated somewhere beyond the rim of the horizon
And the darkness is a mystery of curves and lines.
Still, we lay under the emptiness and drifted slowly outward,

And somewhere in the wilderness we found salvation scratched
Into the earth like a message

Overall Meaning

The spoken lyrics of AFX's [untitled] describe a post-apocalyptic world where the singer and their lover have a final encounter. The disrepair of the world that surrounds them is reflected in their emotional and physical state, which is conveyed through the vivid use of metaphors relating to death, disease, and destruction. Despite this, the couple finds solace in their love, which transcends the constraints of their decaying reality.

The imagery used in the lyrics is evocative of the Romanticism movement in literature, where nature is often used as a vehicle to express human emotion. The mention of holding hands, kissing under trees, and the use of the Ferris wheel as a metaphor for life are all motifs commonly found in Romantic literature. The themes of love and melancholy that are central to Romanticism are also present in [untitled].

We held hands on the last night on earth.
On the final night before potential global doom, we had our hands wrapped around each other's as a symbol of comfort, companionship, and readiness for whatever challenges lay ahead.

Our mouths filled with dust, we kissed in the fields and under trees,
Despite the fact that our surroundings were filled with dirt and other types of gritty debris, we still shared intimate, passionate kisses in our favorite natural settings.

Screaming like dogs, bleeding dark into the leaves.
Our emotional and physical intensity was so great that we could only express it through visceral, animalistic sounds that mixed with our blood, which dripped onto the foliage surrounding us.

It was empty on the edge of town but we knew everyone floated
Although we may have felt isolated at the outskirts of civilization, we recognized that all of humanity would eventually perish and become part of the cycle of nature.

Along the bottom of the river.
We imagined the deceased bodies of others lying on the river's bed, symbolizing a connection between all life and death.

So we walked through the waste where the road curved into the sea
We strolled through the abandoned, decaying remnants of society as we approached the water's edge which separated our world from the unknown depths.

And the shattered seasons lay,
The passing of time had become fragmented and broken, with no clear cycle of life or death.

And the bitter smell of burning was on you like a disease.
The stench of destruction and decay was so overpowering that it lingered on our skin like an unwelcome illness.

In our cancer of passion you said, "Death is a midnight runner."
As we nurtured our intense emotions for each other, you used a poetic way to express the inevitability of death as being swift and mysterious.

The sky had come crashing down like the news of an intimate suicide.
The once stable heavens had collapsed and burned, mirroring the shock and despair one would feel receiving news of a personal loved one's tragic demise.

We picked up the shards and formed them into shapes
We took the remnants of the shattered sky and repurposed them into something beautiful, resembling stars in a bridal gown.

Of stars that wore like an antique wedding dress.
These star-shaped creations were reminiscent of a vintage bridal gown, with their unique and timeless charm.

The echoes of the past broke the hearts of the unborn
The haunting remnants of the past had a profound and heavy impact on future generations, leaving them feeling lost, damaged, and incomplete.

As the ferris wheel silently slowed to a stop.
The cessation of a once lively and thrilling ride represented a larger metaphor for the collapse of society and the world as we knew it.

The few insects skittered away in hopes of a better pastime.
Even the bugs and other small creatures around us could sense the despair and futility of our circumstances, fleeing in search of more promising surroundings.

I kissed you at the apex of the maelstrom and asked
As chaos and destruction swirled around us, I chose to passionately kiss you and then ask you a symbolic yet poignant question.

If you would accompany me in a quick fall,
I was asking if you would join me in a reckless and possibly perilous freefall, an expression of our shared desire for adventure and rebellion.

But you made me realize that my ticket wasn′t for two.
Your response reminded me that I was on this journey alone and unable to take anyone with me, ultimately preparing me for a solo venture.

You said, "The cinders are falling like snow."
You pointed out the beautiful yet ominous sight of falling ashes that resembled snowflakes, which served as a reminder that death and destruction could also be strangely mesmerizing and poetic.

There is poetry in despair, and we sang with unrivaled beauty,
Despite our dire circumstances, we found that there was something incredibly beautiful and emotional about despair, and we sang with an unmatched sense of pathos.

Bitter elegies of savagery and eloquence.
Our songs were bittersweet and poignant, expressing both deep pain and eloquent beauty in equal measure.

Of blue and grey.
Our music conveyed feelings of sadness, melancholy, and nostalgia, as if we were remembering a past that was both heartbreaking and unforgettable.

Strange, we ran down desperate streets and carved our names in the flesh of the city.
Amidst the chaos, we embraced an intense form of rebellion, running through the streets and leaving our indelible marks on the flesh of the city like tattoos.

The sun was stagnated somewhere beyond the rim of the horizon
The sun had ceased to function as we knew it, and was now only a faint memory on the fringes of our dying world.

And the darkness is a mystery of curves and lines.
In the absence of light, the darkness seemed to take on ever-changing and mysterious shapes, creating an otherworldly atmosphere.

Still, we lay under the emptiness and drifted slowly outward,
Despite the futility of our predicament, we laid together under the vast emptiness and allowed ourselves to be slowly pulled away from our doomed home planet.

And somewhere in the wilderness we found salvation scratched
Even as we moved further and further away from Earth, we discovered a glimmer of hope and redemption, etched into the very earth beneath us.

Into the earth like a message
This message of hope and possibility was buried deep within our planet's soil, waiting to be discovered and brought to light again.

With every new content of AFX that I discover, it is always a unique and original experience for me; there are not that many musicians that can do that.

He is truly creative I'll give you that.

Similar to death grips in that sense. Any recommendations for other artists that try out new styles for every album?

I think the 90s was just an amazing era for music. Aphex Twin, NIN, Massive Attack, Marilyn Manson, Tool and many other great artists. All of them also still release great new stuff except for maybe Manson, and Tool is about to release a new album in 12 years or something.

Richex112 I hear A LOT of Aphex influence in Death Grips discography. Especially Niggas on the Moon, Interview EP and Government Plates. Even Steroids I would say. Not that it’s a bad thing though.

A genius is not just good at music. but overall in many things like painting, math inventing. not just one thing. This guys i defiantly good in what he does extremely good but there many out there doing the job as well. i doubt calling him a genius., he should come with more talents than just one

James Hutchinson

Actually a genius in modern culture has referred to anyone who has excelled in a field above their peers. There exists multiple definitions to the word, including that defined by government run medical institution, referential work such as this, and many other examples. I think you are splitting hairs just to make yourself feel better.

sexmachine-Stay on the scene He is also extremely good at electronic engineering. To be able to design complex synthesizers, and make some of the best music ever written with them, would qualify him as a genius by your definition.
