My daughter never really warmed to Raspbian, on her Pi3 b+, but the Windows themes on here could be a life saver with everything being in a familiar place. I'll prep this on an SD card to look over.

I think the biggest obstacle to progress in computing has been for a large part Microsoft.
It penalised PC vendors financially for selling computers with alternative operating systems.
Historically it consistently thwarted interoperability efforts such as JAVA. This went as far as making fundamental changes to low level hardware to actively prevent the running of alternative operating systems. Microsoft called open source "communism" and linux a "cancer". But isnt it true that open source is actually responsible for interoperability more so than any other software model? Linux for example will run on just about any CPU or architecture and so do its applications. In having source code available again aids porting to other operating systems and affords transparency regarding file formats and filesystems.

I think the biggest obstacle is, and was ever, to get at text or file from A to B.
Back in the days people were afraid and didn't understood the basics, at least they've been thought.
Then social media and cloud came up, and with all the sync thigs people never learned to copy over a file.
We still have email. we still have FTP, we still have SMB.
For most: the biggest challenge is still getting a text or file from A to B, even if all have interobale systems.

True. I was 37 in 1988, and the PC was a 386 with 640K of RAM, EGA graphics and a huge 20MB hard drive. With monitor and printer it cost $1800. Career-wise it was one of the best investments I ever made, I learned so much from messing around with DOS.

Also, your old intro takes me back.

I'm waiting for a new SD memory to arrive so I can install it on the Pi 400, but already tried it on virtual machine. It's an amazing OS.

I've been using this happily for the last 6 months, it's a great os to use. I've setup a basic ovefclock to squeeze out extra performance. And switched the kernel to 64bit. You can also boot from USB which is nice,I'm currently using a sata 60gb ssd and I see read write speeds of 330mbs. Definitely an upgrade over the micro sd card. Commander pi is the app to use to switch over the kernel 64bit mode and overclocks.

I've been running this on my Pi 4gb for some time. Using the Win 10 dark theme with some icon changes (can't stand the stock icons), and overclocking to 2.1 GHz, it works quite nicely.

You still want to run it outside of the desktop environment. The UI is super slow if you run it in the DE, games do run well though regardless.

@@benjianderson1978 Yes Ben, I have it. There are still some problems though - notably for me, running Firefox and Thunderbird. Stellarium also fails.
But the basic OS runs very well, and is ever more stable with each update. I use it on a "server" Pi4.

One wonders how they get around copyright laws with their themes. Those sounds, icons, pictures, and other UI elements are all copyrighted, no?

However they do it, it's extremely impressive -- the attention to detail is amazing! They're almost indistinguishable from the originals. Very well done!

Great video Chris! I run TwisterOS on my Pi4 4GB with an SSD and a 2GHz overclock. It's a great experience. It's not my daily driver, but it's a great way to use a Pi4

You have inspired me to go the mini PC route since last year. In light of the pandemic and the crypto craze and chip shortages (making video cards prohibitively expensive), I have discovered that mini PC's have come a long way since back in the day! I got me a Asus PN50 last year from Newegg and now I sent for an Asrock X300 mini PC this year. Thanks! I'm not going to shrink to the level of a raspberry pi because I am used to a terabyte of storage with 16 to 32 gigs of RAM. Raspberry pi however is making such strides, that perhaps in some years it will reach that level!

What a nice surprise to see there is a version of Twister OS for RK3399 boards. I have one of those inside a TV box (H96 Max). It is a powerful piece of hardware with almost no software support as far as I know. Take for granted I will test it and come back to report.

About like my Hackintosh (pretty old, 10.8 I think) on an i7 with 8GB RAM... not exactly sluggish but certainly not snappy. Upped to 32GB and it was SO much better. Couldn't believe an OS that old would need that much RAM to perform well, but .... there it was.

@@t_y8274 There are other operating systems that you can install that are 64 bit. The official Raspberry Pi Imager even has a section for downloading Ubuntu and Manjaro. Both 64 and 32 bit versions with Manjaro having XFCE, Mate, and KDE Plasma available for it. Not to mention a whole world of modded OSs for the thing. You could even run a 64 bit kernel using Commander Pi, however it is a bit janky. There is also the beta version of Raspberry Pi OS 64 which is definitely janky as well but its available to download and use.

@@Kyle1444 you can buy raspberry pi's with 8GB of ram, which need 64 bit OS's. Many programs have also dropped 32 bit support at this point (including most of the linux community, fresh installs don't even come with 32 bit anymore).

Loads of settings - 5:20 When you have to scroll up and down in a menu that SHOULD BE A CLUE that it needs to be re-organized. Either put the "settings" in a new window like the Windows Control Panel or at least break it up into different groups of settings.

Recently Used Twister OS x86 to revive an older Laptop. It provided the best MACINTOSH style user interface experience I've found on Linux. Could care less about simulating the Windblows virus interface, but great to have a slick and familiar Mac replicant! Twister Mac just RULES! :-)

Windows 2000 was a beast compared to consumer grade XP vanilla and SP1. Windows ME might even have been more stable than early XP, lol

I had an earlier version of this and it was OK. Now it seems a lot more stable on all the different OS themes (sounds and everything). Two major gripes... 1. You can't drag the desktop launchers into the bottom launch bar in the Mac theme and then delete the desktop icon, because it will also remove the icon from the from the launch bar. 2. I cannot find sound settings anywhere in system preferences or the pi system settings. (Never mind.. found it!!) Other than that everything seems to work pretty well, and the addition of the dynamic desktop pics in the Mac theme is pretty cool.😁

I can see the windows themes being good for elderly relatives who've only ever known their trusty old Windows XP box.

It's the fonts for me though, it seems to be a common theme with Windows/Mac theme clones that they just can't get the fonts to match, if they could sort that out (along with the font rendering) you'd struggle to tell the difference until you opened a folder or the start menu.

Fonts are easy. They are all downloadable and both OSes let you choose the UI fonts.

Agree the rendering is usually a problem though.
