It's been a while since it fell apart
I did my best to walk away but
This moonlit night keeps my head lost
Now watching you from afar ain't easy
One by one you stick needles to the heart
To my heart
Watch us drift and grow
I'm guessing that it's best to let go
But I'll always miss the best part of us
Best part of us
But I'll always miss the best part of us
Best part of us
Was it loneliness or insanity
I fucked up the possibilities
We may move on, into another dream
But a youthful love is hard to redeem
I know that time will mend these scars but
How I wish we could go back to the start
To the start
I know, love will never make it back home
Watch us drift and grow
I'm guessing that it's best to let go
But I know, love will never make it back home
Watch us drift and grow
I'm guessing that it's best to let go
But I'll always miss the best part of us
Best part of us
But I'll always miss the best part of us
Best part of us
In "Best Part of Us," AMpm explores the aftermath of a failed relationship. The opening lines reveal that it has been some time since the relationship ended ("It's been a while since the storm, baby/ It's been a while since it fell apart"). Despite the time that has passed, the singer is having difficulty moving on and finds themselves painfully aware of their former partner ("Watching you from afar ain't easy/One by one you stick needles to the heart/To my heart").
As the song progresses, the singer questions what went wrong in the relationship ("Was it loneliness or insanity"). They acknowledge that they made mistakes and that some things are beyond repair ("I fucked up the possibilities"). Nevertheless, they express a deep nostalgia for what they had ("But I'll always miss the best part of us").
The repeated refrain of "love will never make it back home" suggests that the singer has accepted that the relationship is over and that they should move on, but nevertheless they find it hard to completely let go. The final lines of the song bring the narrative full circle, repeating the sentiment from the beginning: "But I'll always miss the best part of us."
Overall, "Best Part of Us" is a poignant reflection on the complexity of relationships and the difficulty of letting go of a past love.
