Bump stocks were banned because :

"Bump stocks alter the firing ability with an external, attached piece, from the factory default firing setting and thus are an illegal aftermarket mod as per the buyer-seller agreement involving Drugs, Firearms and Vehicles."

That's literally it. The other justifications were shot down as unconstitutional. If people were more active in the gun community, in the law making process this wouldn'tbe an issue. We are fighting ourselves with our lack of activism.

They tried banning suppressors but because banning things about guns just because they are scary is actually illegal, it failed at the federal level and could only be pushed as far as requiring a tax stamp to have and use them. Some states have added noise reduction to the list of things that modify a firearms firing capability but most failed since you have to modify most of your state constitution regarding vehicles to do so.

@Ryuken While true, they definately aren't doing it as easily. I don't think they should be banned personally, but I agree with the law as written, but I think that it needs to be altered/looked at now-a-days. The law of modifying guns from factory firing state stems from modifying cars beyond their factory state of driving. It's silly that it carried over but because The ATF, DMV and DOT are so closely ran together, some of their policies leaked over. For instance it is illegal to alter any medication you get from its original state and if found altered that is a charge all by itself called manufacturing. Even if it was already made and you just added something to it, the charge applies. The same charge applies to cars illegally modified for instance a non-turbo car being given a turbo ect, a semi-auto fire arm being machined to allow full auto, or an external modification to allow "fully-semi-auto" which yes, is an actual term but only really used in legalise to describe a weapon "modified from original firing state to be full auto without the mechanism to make the gun fully autonomous in the sense that holding the fire mechanism in a static position causes full auto fire. Instead the external mechanism causes an action to reset the trigger and pull it again in a static action requiring motnextra input from the wielder." But saying all that on legal document takes up more space than the generally accepted "fully-semi-auto" they use in courts regarding very specifically the guns I mentioned in the quotes AND NOTHING ELSE. That CNN reporter went full idiot and read legalise script without realizing exactly what it said, thinking it came across as big brain research. It didn't, but the term is real I've seen it in legal text, typically involving FBI investigations.

That being said, looking at all modern gun laws through that lens revealed we are semi legislating cars like a hybrid of drugs and cars. It just doesn't work well. Frankly a tiered licensing system while having a lot of faults, would be far better. Everyone by default at 18 gets the bare minimum low capacity pistol, shotgun/hunting rifle licensing. But you want other more extreme and full auto guns? Prove you can handle it, pass the course for maintenance and care and storage and proper use, then bam now you flash that licensing and you can buy the previously "illegal" guns because well, you proved you're capable and passed the class with a 90% or higher. My confidence that you can handle that gun as well as your own and everyone around you is now fortified, and any questioning about your fire arms at all can be resolved with a flash of an I.D.

Again it's not perfect but it seems a lot better than our current method, especially if we make the classes free, and a license gives you free range time/ammunition at the behest of the government providing ranges the funds, for wanting gun owners to be responsible and capable, that would be best case scenario imo.

NOTE: if they filed down the sear engagement in order to create a shorter cocking distance in the trigger , they are playing with fire. It is NOT the same operation as full auto and i have personally witness billets nearly doubling up in the barrel (not good) and i have also witnessed an ak47 in a 223 caliber(yes i said this correctly) push an unfired round through a fired shell then misfire and not discharge , becoming lodged very badly in the chamber , with a STRUCK primer.
