Cheers Magic,
great to hear some excitement.

Love the changes to Shennong GP. Already got better results going low Kuafu but high Myth Units in this god and the Farming GP was just another favor drainer.

Love some Greek MU, Heroes and Unit buffs, Eggy Rax Buffs, only fear a bit for my Atty.

I mean 8 Seconds Dryads was a bit insane, it was almost like they where growing on trees...oh, wait.

Maybe Rhea into Hekate can hold up to Theia+Atlas now.

First off, don't worry about the video being an hour long, I love hearing your detailed thoughts!

Second, I highly respect your opinion as one of the best players in the world, but I do feel a clash between high-level and casual desires.

Speaking as a casual player, I really, really like myth technologies with big effects. The way that the game's mythology captures my imagination is a huge part of why I prefer this game to something like AoE2. When I research a myth technology, I have the expectation that it will have a noticeable and exciting effect; otherwise it's just a regular upgrade with a favour cost, which doesn't feel like a mythical technology.

But you're absolutely right that even though it's more exciting for casual players, it makes the game much harder to balance. Maybe even impossibly so, without making the civs' tech trees more homogenous to plug weaknesses (i.e. giving China hack-damage-based anti-infantry). It's definitely really hard to reconcile the two desires. :/

Also, I think the biggest thing affecting player retention (at least, casual players) is the lack of singleplayer content, or a dedicated co-op mode with some kind of meta-progression. Tempest Rising, a C&C spiritual successor which recently launched, has sold very well largely off the casual crowd looking for a new campaign (it has a pretty bare-bones multiplayer and only two factions at launch).

Another thing about Tempest Rising that gives me hope is that it shows AoM:R doesn't need high player retention to continue be successful. What matters if sales; if a ton of people bought Immortal Pillars, it's not a huge deal if they stop playing after a while, as long as they're all back to buy the next expansion 😜. I just hope that the sales have been good enough to justify further support beyond the second expansion. 🙏

I like the asymmetry that strong god powers and technologies provide. It’s important to lower them to a point where strategy can blossom while still keeping them powerful enough that each civ plays and feels different.

@30Salmao

It's a tought balance. But the devs are bold to try to make it happen.

@sebastianheselaars4315

Absolutely! In my opinion a couple Egyptian god powers are still too strong, what do you think?

@30Salmao

@ I think it always boils down to the minor god pack: god powers alone doesn't tell the whole story (what is a balance achievement in my opinion).

Minor god pack = GP, Myth Unit, upgrades; the pack should be balanced into the actual context of the Major God (combos between minor gods), civ units and etc.

A awesome GP for Egypt might be a save boat while in Atty would be a total power creep desaster. It depends on the META also.

@moikanos11

I think the fundamental problem is excessively destructive god powers. when there's something like Implode, meteor storm or earthquake as an option it's very hard to justify going for the other pick - these god powers can literally end an otherwise even game, if used at the right time. I think destructive god powers should be kept at the most around the power level of Tempest, with some damage dealing potential but mainly focused around a strategic advantage like Crowd controlling an army on a smaller area.

Implode is just ridiculous.

As the age-old saying goes, "If it's good enough for Iammagic, it's good enough for me."

@IamMagicAOM

Ahah thanks

@philipc3262

I do like the patch, but as an Atlantean main I don't feel so good Lol

@AleksandrGoubin-h4p

The best rts ever!
