The Noose
APC Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So glad to see you well
Overcome and completely silent now
With heaven's help
You've cast your demons out

And not to pull your halo down
Around your neck and tug you off your cloud
But I'm more than just a little curious
How you're plannin' to go about makin' your amends
To the dead
To the dead

Recall the deeds as if they're all
Someone else's atrocious stories
Now, you stand reborn before us all
So glad to see you well

And not to pull your halo down
Around your neck and tug you to the ground
But I'm more than just a little curious
How you're plannin' to go about makin' your amends
To the dead
To the dead

With your halo slippin' down
Your halo slippin'
Your halo slippin' down
Your halo slippin' down

Your halo slippin' down
(But I'm more than just a little curious)
(How you're plannin' to go about makin' your amends)
Your halo slippin' down
(But I'm more than just a little curious)
(How you're plannin' to go about makin' your amends)
Your halo slippin' down
(But I'm more than just a little curious)
(How you're plannin' to go about makin' your amends)
Your halo slippin' down
(But I'm more than just a little curious)
(How you're plannin' to go about makin' your amends)

Your halo slippin' down

Your halo slippin' down
To choke you now

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to A Perfect Circle's "The Noose" are an introspective reflection on the process of overcoming addiction and making amends to those who were hurt by one's past actions. The opening lines express relief and joy at seeing the person doing well and having overcome their demons with the help of "heaven's help." The singer acknowledges that they don't want to bring the person down, but they are curious about how they plan to make amends to those who have passed away.

The chorus repeats the same lines about the halo slipping down around the person's neck, symbolically representing the weight of their past mistakes catching up to them, and potentially even choking them now. However, the repetition also suggests that there is a pattern, a cycle of self-destruction that the person must continually fight against. The final lines of the song are somber and ominous, giving voice to the fear that the person may be swallowed up by their past and the harm they caused.

Overall, "The Noose" is a moving exploration of the complicated emotions surrounding addiction recovery and the difficult process of making amends to those who have been hurt. The lyrics use powerful symbolism and repetition to convey a sense of impending danger, but also of hope and the possibility of redemption.

As a female traverses the planet manipulating their man to do her bidding, she wipes off the ends of her means that appear by the help of heaven or Evan man.

The singer is an outside force guilt tripping a manipulator. The manipulator has used another person for a duplicitous agenda but they died in the process.

How can they shake off their lies by justifying it with having their best intentions in mind, when the person they were manipulating actually died.

“And not to” we can hear the clever guilt trip

Think of someone who married a man to get back at her father but he took it seriously and she couldn’t stand being with him because she was nothing like her father. So, she forced him to leave her by taking actions that would logically cause him to leave. “But it was his decision she tells herself” “I couldn’t stand the drinking” she tells society.”

She moves on and many centuries later she has found peace and then her old husbands mother calls the manipulator to say “ your first husband has died please tell his son Evan that he died.”
So Evan asks “I’m glad you found peace now mom but how do you plan on making amends to the dead?”

Her entire ego and sense of self now has a schism. It will choke who she is now. A guilt trip on this level will cause an existential crisis at the bare minimum.

In this situation the singer has eviscerated someone’s ego.

I often wonder how many lives this album has LITERALLY saved. I know at least one. Many years ago a young man started to do some stupid shit and was reminded that these feelings pass and situations change. I am grateful for the hands that wrote every note of an album that has been so impactful on my life for over a decade. For those of you hurting. There is one that feels you and understands. Spiral on and keep going.
